Niners Nation Prediction: 49ers win 17-10

Feel free to enter your predictions HERE

And so after a bye week, the 49ers return to the field with Vernon Davis playing and Alex Smith not.  They spent much of the off time trying to solve the offenses woes.  Now we get to see what comes of that.  The offense was performing best in the last game The Disease played in, so hopefully he can bring back some of that explosiveness.

I've gone with a relatively low-scoring prediction and think yet again, the only way for the 49ers to win is to shut down the Giants offense.  Keep an eye on Jeremy Shockey as he could definitely be a guy who makes things happen for the Giants.  We lack a shutdown cover linebacker, so it'll take some big time team work to keep him from tearing our defense apart.

GO NINERS!

Predictions link goes to Week 5
which I guess is okay, my predictions have been pretty piss-poor anyway.

As I look at this game I know that everything says that the Niners will get creamed, but remember:

  1. A lot of the Niners' offensive problems has to do with their conservative strategy. Two plays led to a TD against Baltimore. I don't expect many double reverses, but I expect a little more excitement to the offense this week. Maybe someone will figure out that the shotgun is good to keep the QB upright in the face of a fierce rush, quick screens and slants, etc. Ashley runs deep. In short, someone will rediscover the forward pass.
  2. The Niners have a good defense. They've played bend but don't break. A little pressure on Eli can go a long way. As good as they've played they haven't put much pressure. Here's another thing. Not too many turnovers so far. Throw a few interceptions and fumble recoveries and the Niners could find themselves in a really good position.
  3. Nolan knows what he's been doing hasn't worked. There are problems with the O line, the receivers are very ordinary, but you have to hang these losses on the coach staff and the coaching philosophy. Either Nolan changes or he gets closer to getting fired, this year or next. His total control of the offensive next year is already in jeopardy. Nolan will change or he will pay for it.
These are reasons to hope that the Niners will wake up and play their game of the season, shocking the New York media and taking the team back to 3-3 on their way to winning the division.

That's what I'm telling myself while I'm mixing the onion dip.

what to expect from this game
More bad offense, more great defense and special teams, more bad play calling by Hostler.  And then everyone will be on their throats in a big way because we've all run out of comment cards.

about the tie
during the last road game he had on the shirt and tie under a reebok windbreaker or pullover jacket.  I'm surprised he doesn't have something like that on again.  Maybe he's allowed to just wear the shirt and tie OR he's just risking a fine and doesn't care.

Allen is still good, but he has lost a step. Jennings is just not a very good player. Heitman is confusing his reads at the line (he has to be).

Otherwise, fine. Even Smiley's more or less out of my doghouse.

Pretenders
I was cautiously optimistic coming into this season.  I never really thought we were a playoff team...I thought it was possible we could slip in due to the general weakness of the NFC.  This season (even our victories) has exposed the team.  We have a LONG way to go before we can call ourselves good, let alone a contender.

I love the Niners, but this season has been very disappointing.  Our offense is as bad as it has ever been...one of the most pathetic offenses I've ever seen.  And as the season is dragging on I am really starting to doubt Nolan's ability to take this team to the next level.  Our offensive ineptitude was obvious from the first game, the team needed major adjustments, not minor tweaks, and Nolan has done nothing impressive.

Sorry for the rant but it seems like we are saying the same exposed weaknesses EVERY WEEK.  This isn't solely a personnel issue...its on Nolan.

uh
Can the Niners put another score or two on the board?

I want to see another connection to Lelie. If he's on the field Gore gets more space. If Dilfer connects with him everything else opens.

Another thing
And this might sound ridiculous given all that has been said the past few weeks, but the Niners really didn't run enough in this game.  Obviously they couldn't run as much when they got way behind, but they should have been running at the start of the 2nd half.  Gore was running well and they didn't use him hardly at all.  It's like Hostler has no clue what's going on in the game he is calling.

I don't all that much
to complain about with the defense.

And I'm glad to see the offense has rediscovered the pass game. Dilfer has made wrong reads two interceptions. Dilfer will be back on the bench soon.

And Gore is running great to the right.

Not impressed
Its not all that difficult to run well when the Giants are so far ahead that they are giving us 5-6 yards on short running plays.

I read earlier a post where someone mentioned Gore's "great" run to end the first half.  When you run it up the gut from deep within your own hald of the field on 3rd and 10+ with 6 seconds left in the half, the defense is going to give you at least ten yards to work with.  That was not a "promising" run.

And its no longer on Hostler
Look, we all know he is a terrible offensive coordinator.  But thats been clear since the beginning of this season.  When do you reach a point where Nolan needs to step in and either take more control over offensive playcalling, fire Hostler and hire someone else, or at least sit Hostler down and teach him how to stop sucking so much?  I say about 3 weeks ago.

I'm very disappointed in Nolan.  Out team is officially bad.

Bad protection, critical penalties
This is a badly coached unit.

33-9
Everyone in the league knows if you pressure the Niners on passing downs they can't handle it. Another holding penalty.
