Report: Porter to visit SF

The North County Times (San Diego) reports that despite his interest in playing for the Chargers, Joey Porter is not a good fit in San Diego, and has a visit to San Francisco planned "in coming days". Link:

If Nolan can stomach signing a whiner like Lelie, I think he could certainly handle a mouthy guy who can actually produce on Sundays, inspire the players around him, and already has a Super Bowl ring. It would also add a nice symmetry to their offseason moves to improve the defense -- signing a CB, S, LB, and DL.

I for one would be ecstatic with the Niners free agency haul if they could land Porter. What say you?

I voted at the right price,
but I want to qualify that with the right attitude also.  If Porter has his head on straight, he could be exactly what the defense needs opposite Manny Lawson.  If comes in with a surly attitude, it could rub off on some of the other guys and cause problems.

If Coach Nolan thinks he can keep Porter in check, his word is good enough for me.

On a bit of a side note, John Clayton has said the Niners are looking to add 7 starters through free agency and the draft.  Porter would be the 5th guy, with Lelie at WR, Franklin at NT, Lewis at SS, and Clement at CB.  Outside of probably DE, what other spot are we trying to fill?  A second WR spot?  OL?  Any thoughts?

the seven samurai
I heard it was seven starters just on defense. I may have heard wrong.

7 Spanish Angels
According to an article of Clayton's, it's 7 on defense.  I'm not sure about how that works, with BY, Harris/Spencer, Lawson, Smith, Moore and Lewis all being guys I don't see getting replaced.  Unless they're counting on a guy to replace BY in 2008, I'm sure who we'd be looking at as I only get 5, 6 at the most.

draft
There's a good chance they take defensive end Adam Carriker in the first round.  Even if he doesn't start right away, he could be groomed for the future.

I'd bet they take at least one linebacker high in the draft as well.

Draft
Here's what we've done so far: CB, SS, DT.  If we add Porter that's 4 defensive starters.  Carriker would start opposite BY I would think, and that would make 5.  What other two defenders would we replace?  That's the trouble I'm having.  Adding another ILB and DE are solid ideas, but they'd be starting in 2008 at the earliest.  That's what really makes me think it was supposed to 7 starters total, not just on defense.

starters on defense
Maybe the goal is 7 starters including options to replace existing starters, or at least compete to replace them.  If we bring in an inside linebacker to push for Ulbrich or Smith's job, maybe it pushes Smith and Ulbrich to perform better.

smart shopper
This is obviously the most fun us Niner fans have had in recent free-agent seasons, but I keep thinking of Dan Snyder and his fantasy league "if it's a big name, sign him" approach. The horror. It's still all about the draft.

Snyder
When Snyder did it he was going after older veterans for his roto team.  He added Bruce Smith and Deion Sanders when both were on the down side of their careers.  Nate Clements and Michael Lewis are young and in the prime of their careers.  We definitely still need to build somewhat through the draft, but we've got the money, we might as well add the talent.

Porter
he's the kind of guy who could really jack up the intensity of our defense. The few games last year in which our defense play well, were also the games that we played with the most intensity and hit the hardest. Porter is the kinda cat who wouldn't let the other guys let their intensity levels down. I certainly would welcome him here. It doesn't hurt that the guy can flat out play, either.

I see his contract being about the same as Adalius Thomas got with New England and perhaps a bit more.

Whoever he signs with, however, he will have to update his website.

Bring back Eddie D.

Or Maybe Not
Matt Maiocco reports in his blog that the 49ers' interest in Porter is not serious. That's too bad, because Maiocco is usually very accurate. Link:
