according to Matt Maiocco:
Linebacker Tully Banta-Cain and the 49ers are very close on a contract agreement. Banta-Cain, a former standout at Cal, visited with the 49ers on Monday. An announcement could come later in the day."We're working it out," said Jim Sims, Banta-Cain's Oakland-based agent.
Banta-Cain has played in the 3-4 defense with the Patriots his first four seasons in the league, starting five games last season. He recorded 5.5 sacks with 10 quarterback hurries and 40 tackles last season.
Banta-Cain has played on two Super Bowl winners. As a rookie, he saw action on special teams units in the Patriots' 32-29 victory over the Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII. And the following year he played defense in pass-rush situations and special teams in a 24-21 win over the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX.
The Rams offered Banta-Cain a contract during a visit to St. Louis on the first day of free agency. He was scheduled to travel to visit with the Steelers later today.
