The NFL Draft

NFL draft weekend has evolved into one of my favorite weekends of the year. I'm heading into year 7 of grilling, drinking, and watching as much NFL related content as possible. As an added bonus there are no gifts, awkward family interactions, or other speed bumps that mar other holidays. Does it bother me when Chris Berman pretends to guess correctly what position each team is drafting a mere seconds before it happens? Of course. Do I want to see a repeat of the bizarre matrix themed runway that the top prospects (Bush, Leinart, Young, etc.) walked last year? Of course not. But that type of stuff is a minor nuisance. I'm fired up to watch Mel Kiper get the Pats pick wrong again. It's an annual tradition. I'll also make Brady Quinn/AJ Hawk jokes, pray that someone provides the comedy that Pac Man Jones and Matt Jones provided in previous drafts, and marvel at the optimism that surrounds each team's draft. And if the NFL draft becomes a too trendy in a few years then I'll still have the combine. Long story short I'm fired up. And besides the Patriots picks I'm very interested to see what the 49ers do. They are going to make some noise this year.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Big year
This is a huge year for the 49ers, so needless to say we're all quite excited.  Every draft is important, but this could be the one that puts us over the top for the next decade.

I'm going to be blogging for ALL 10 HOURS of Day 1.  I'll be flipping between ESPN and the NFL Network, because no sane man can listen to Mel Kiper and Chris Berman for 10 hours.

So feel free to swing by during the draft to drop in your 2 cents on anything you want.  I'm gonna need the company!

I'll be here with you Fooch
I'm picking up my new couch tomorrow.  I'm moving the computer to the coffee table in front of said couch on Saturday morning, and then I'm going to live there until the draft is over.  I might even have to bring a second TV in for both feeds.  I can't wait for this draft.  I've said it before, but I feel this could a similar impact as the 1981 draft did.  Maybe not in terms of Pro Bowl apperances, but in the quality and quantity of help we add.

Draft
I'll post a planned schedule sometime tonight or tomorrow, but the plan is to blog all Saturday and then as much of Sunday as possible.  Anything you'd like to see as part of it?  I'm planning on using New Era Scouting's scouting reports for the various players drafted by the 49ers...It'll be a combination of serious analysis with random fun.  10 hours is a long time to be sitting on my butt...

We'll start with a single open thread and if it fills up with 400-500 comments we'll open another...Hopefully we'll have to open multiple threads.  I'm posting at various myspace 49ers groups and trying to get some plugs from various sites on the Internet.  I'm psyched.  Like you said, it's a HUGE draft!

It it just me...
I happen to be okay with Chris Berman.  I'm even okay listening to Kiper for hours.  While I don't agree with a lot of the things he says (especially when it comes to how a player will fit on a team), I like his reviews/insight on the prospect(s).

Berman is amusing to me.  He tries so hard to be amusing that it can actually amuse me.

Berman
He amuses me at times and he annoys me at times...I've never sat through the entire first day of the draft, so we'll see if he grows on me over the course of the day.

Do I go carb heavy throughout the day to get some energy, or no carbs but plenty of calories?  I'm gonna need my energy.

I think...
... carb-heavy while staying planted in front of the TV is a recipe for 'siesta'.  I don't think you need much of an energy boost to watch the draft.  What you do need is something to take your mind off of it when you get restless.

Restlessness
Well I can follow espn's baseball game trackers.  The A's play at 1 and I can flip on the radio for that (they're blacked out because of Fox's game of the week).  So I've got a few options...

Oh I'll definitely have to drink to get through 10 hours of Mel Kiper.

last year
my buddies and I drank, quite a bit.  We even sort of played a draft drinking game which I am trying to hunt down the rules for again.  Mostly stuff like:

1 drink each time someone refers to a player's "wingspan"

3 drinks every time Berman "guesses" the pick right before it happens

2 drinks every time the Jets fans boo.

etc

Rule 1
Shotgun a beer when someone besides the 49ers drafts Michael Bush.

Bush
And then braekneck throws the glass he just shotgunned through his tv!

The Beauty of Shotguns
is that in principle it's a beer bong without all the equipment, a self contained dispossable beer bong.  And empty beer cans do way less damage than glasses.

A little research goes a long way
I googled "NFL draft drinking game" and I found a couple of links for some rules

The Official 2006 NFL Draft Drinking Game from Deadspin

NFL Drinkig Game from post-gazette.com

And for regular season action see

49er Drinking Game

Some of the rules are outdated but could be modified easily enough.  Either way I think these two sources would provide enough of a foundation for a '07 Niners Nation NFL Draft Drinking Game.

Regarding the post-gazette rules I find the "Larry Johnson is chosen. Bust city! Pour a 40 oz. into the ground in memory of Ki-Jana Carter, Curtis Enis, Blair Thomas and D.J. Dozier" situational rule to be pretty funny.  Only thing is we took Kwame Harris one spot infront of Johnson.

Damn that hurts.  I need a beer bong and 1184 cc's of Steel Reserve, STAT!

Awesome
Dan Shanoff (formerly of ESPN's Daily Quickie, now DanShanoff.com), had a drinking game as well:

Cliche (number of sips)
"Upside" (1)
"The next..." (1)
"Best player available" (1)
"Intangibles" (1)
"Value pick" (-1)
"Big Board" (2)
"Great hips" (-2)
"Character guy" (3)
"Physicality" (4)
Anything about Mel's hair (5)
"But what do I know?" (10)

For the Post-Gazette game it says drink twice when your team's picks scroll by on the ticker...Considering it's a non-stop ticker, that's a lot of drinking.

- sips
whats is -2 sips?  do you really have to throw up in your mouth a spit -2 sips worth of beer back into your glass?

by methodrampage on Apr 26, 2007 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

sips
I'm guessing it's either a typo (the keys are right next to one another) or it means that you give out two sips?
G.O.B.: What? That's his girlfriend? Michael: Yeah. G.O.B.: What, is she funny, or something?

NFL Draft Question
I know that I should know this, but I'm too lazy to look it up.

What time does the draft start on Saturday and does it go 3 rounds on Saturday or just 2?

Thanks.

Draft
It goes 3 rounds on Saturday with a start time of Noon Eastern, 9am pacific.  I'll be at the Warriors game tomorrow night, but plan on being up and blogging sometime before 9am on Saturday.

And the first day is just the first three rounds.  Rounds 4-7 follow on Sunday.

Steel Reserve
Any time a comments section has a Steel Reserve reference I have to take notice.
Celtics '08 or bust. Are you on the bandwagon?

more on the drinking
my friends and I are working on a new set of rules.  They're pretty silly but are based around the cliche thing like Shanoff's.  I'll get them up tomorrow sometime once we have them finished.
