Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Best Game I've Ever Seen by Peter King

Montana finished with five touchdowns for 423 passing yards against the best defense in the land, and on the road, in a bloodthirsty stadium, a modern-day Colosseum.

Montana, as usual, said nothing I can remember after the game. He never did say much. But what a player. Looking back, I know that's the best I ever saw one of the top five quarterbacks ever play.

Looks like Joe Montana made quite the impression on Peter King.  Anyone else remember this game?  I miss the days of Montana and Lott and miss having an owner who cared as much as Eddie D.  What is your favorite 49ers memory?

Remember that time
when Steve Young almost fell over again and again?  That's one of mine.

Hey!
Mine too!
I keep reliving the moment when Steve Young almost fell down... over and over...

Fondest memory.
I don't know if it is THE fondest memory I have of 49ers games, but it was definitely one of the first ones that came to mind.  It was the 2002 playoffs.  The Giants were down by 24 points (I think), but produced one of the NFL's most memorable comebacks ever.

Niners
You mean.

Because I don't remember the SF Giants being that far down in any game of the 2002 playoffs.

Intially
I thought he was talking about the NY Giants making a comeback against the Niners.  And I thought, "Why would that be one of his fondest memories?"

Err.
Yeah, what he said!  But you know, the Giants may as well have been that far down in 2002, as it didn't matter much in the end anyway.

Weird thing is
I don't remember a thing about those MLB playoffs after the first round.

That Eagles Game
it was one of the best performances ever by Joe. 4 TD passes in the 4th quarter after being just bruised and battered for 3 quarters (sacked 8 times,  IIRC). He was awesome, as was Taylor, Rice and Jones.

Other Great Games...
a few other great niner games i can remember:
  1. '89 - MNF, 49ers at LA Rams. 49ers from behind to win on 2 90+ yard John Taylor TDs
  2. '94 Season NFC Championship Game. Cowboys vs. 49ers. 49ers finally take down the 'boys.
  3. '98 Season Opener. Jets vs. 49ers. Rice returns. Hearst wins it in OT with 96 yard TD run.
Game I would most like to forget about:

1. '90 Season NFC Championship Game. Damn you Leonard Marshall! Damn you Matt Bahr!

1994 NFC Title Game
All excellent choices.

Seeing them finally beat the Cowboys and get to the Super Bowl was such a fun game...definitely one of my favorite.

Seeing Hearst with the big OT run was a really fun one to watch also.

I agree, and one more to add
I was at the 1994 NFC Championship game and it was, without question, the greatest sports moment of my life.  I was so vested that year, hanging on every snap of every game...a loss ruined my weekend (luckily they only lost three that year).  That game was beautiful.  I remember how all the sports talk morons ripped Eric Davis the entire week before the game as the major hole in the Niners defense...and then he took a first drive interception back to the house and forced a fumble on the ensuing kick-off.  Awesome.  Other beautiful memories from that game: the last moment of the first half touchdown connection between Young and Rice, Tim Harris' big sack in the 4th quarter, and Young taking a linebacker on and pushing his ass into the end zone.  Watching Young run around that field after the game was quite a sight...

The other game of note was the 1998 wild card game against the Packers.  The game that gave birth to the monster that would become T.O.  I remember watching Terrell drop multiple passes that day, blaming the sun in his eyes at least once, then coming up with the big catch, getting sandwiched between two angry Packers, and holding on to the ball.  Then the man formerly known as Terrell wept and hugged the Mooch.  When Young was asked after the game whether the play should be called the Catch II, he quipped that it should be called the Throw (hence my Niners Nation moniker).  It was a fantastic throw...

Your handle
And my signature come from the exact same place.

That one play sends chills down my spine every single time I see it. The play starts and suddenly Young is going down from an uneven patch of grass and the game is over and the world is a dark dark place and then he's just not on the ground and the ball is in the air and there are fifteen Packers flying through the air, but the ball threads through all of them into T.O.'s unbelievably tiny hands, and he's crushed... and there's no way to tell if he held on to it and the world is dark again because you know that he's dropped everything thrown his way up to that point, and then the sign: Touchdown! And the world erupts into a fiery, blazing light, and the 49ers win the game, and everything is good.

It might have been the single best throw I've ever seen, historical highlights included.

And now that I think about it, Steve Young might be the only QB T.O. has caught who he didn't criticize, even in retrospect (Tony Romo pending).

Young
How could TO criticize Young?  Steve was only one of the best quarterbacks ever, has a superbowl ring and knew how to get the ball to TO.  Young also had to benefit of playing with a TO prior to TO being the TO that everybody knows and loves today.

It'll be interesting to see how the Romo/TO relationship progresses this year.  Romo does seem to find TO more than Bledsoe did.  And if Romo can keep TO happy the Cowboys will be looking pretty scarey.

AH yes!
Crazy that I didn't pick up on your sig until now...I still remember watching that stumble, makes my nervous even in highlight reels.

That was back when T.O. was just emerging and, in many ways, he seemed humble.  I remember him crying on the Mooch after the game, and I actually thought, "Wow, he really thought he had let his team down, and now he is redeemed.  That's great."  Probably the last time T.O. ever felt more for his team than for himself.

One more thing about the 94 game
Not sure if any of you have watched the NFL Network hour-long special on the 1994 Niners, but I highly recommend it.  One thing I appreciated while watching it is, in retrospect, all the major players (Young, B. Jones, and Merton Hanks were interviewed extensively) freely admit what we all already know...that that team was built for the sole purpose of taking out the Cowboys.

All that B.S. during the season about taking one game at a time and setting their sights on the Superbowl, just not the case...they wanted the Cowboys in the NFC Championship game from day one.

All the sweeter since we got them and smacked them around Candlestick.

i think the interesting thing about TO this year..
is not just how he will act with romo this season but how he will be without parcells. TO vs. parcells was a war that i think TO knew he couldn't win and consequently he basically was on his best behavior last season...or as good as a behavior that we can expect from TO.

this season with wade phillips as the coach...a guy who isn't a strong disciplinarian...we could see the bad TO return, particularly if things don't go well this season with the 'boys and romo reverts back to the way he played the last few games of the season.
