Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Buying a jersey soon...

The last time I unloaded some $$$ on a 49er jersey, I went for the Garcia #5 jersey back in the late 90's. Then it was T.O. I could wear either jersey around San Diego (where I live) without hearing much snickering from the bandwagon Charger fans then.

Neither jersey gets much time out of the closet any more (for obvious reasons), and I am looking to invest in a new jersey of a current 49er that I can safely wear for a few years without regretting the spend. Having just turned 30, I don't have a favorite player like I did in the fanboy days of my youth.

I'm not completely sold on anyone other than Gore, but I see Gore jerseys everywhere, even here in SD. I almost went with the Manny Lawson last year.

I saw a rack full of these home jerseys (below) last time I was up in the Bay Area. Who should I go with?

Alex Smith
Gore
Lawson
Haralson
Willis
Jackson
Battle

Until then I'll continue to rock the Steve Young away jersey.

P.S. If you see an Andy Lee jersey, pick it up for me and I'll pay you back. ;)

Random jersey sighting
I saw a guy with a Tim Rattay jersey on the bus yesterday!  Highlight of my day:)

I'd love an Andy Lee jersey too.  I'd say go with the Battle jersey.  I've got an Alex Smith jersey, but I think I want to add a Battle jersey as well.

Battle...really?
You pulling my leg?

I have seen a few Battles on the rack at stores, and I just have a feeling that owning that jersey would be the 2007 version of owning a Mike Sherrard or JJ Stokes jersey.

Ideally the next jersey I buy gives me 4-5 years of a wear. I'm thinking young potential Pro-Bowler or at least above average player.

I think I just argued myself out of a Battle jersey.

BUT THE TIME TO BUY IS NOW. OPERATORS ARE STANDING BY.

Battle
is one of our favorite players around here,

But I'd say for your money take the Smith, Willis, Davis (did you say there were no Davis jerseys?), or Lawson.

okay
Patrick Willis or Vernon Davis.
Those are the two on my Christmas wish list (hey, it's never too early).
Merton Hanks forever and ever.

re
unless any of you know where to get a Merton Hanks jersey ANYWHERE. I've seen a few around but never get a chance to ask where they got them from. probably just old unis but hey, maybe there's a store somewhere....

OMG
Merton Hanks!

You might have to special order that somewhere. But it's AWESOME.

That Merton Hanks jersey
would be especially sweet if it were sold as a turtleneck.

It would take an absurd amount of fabric to cover that man's giraffe-neck, so I suppose it will remain a figment of my imagination.

Personal preferences.
I like linebackers, so going with a Lawson or Willis jersey would be neat.  Outside of those two, I'd probably go with Gore or Alex Smith.

i'm a big fan of...
throwback jerseys. players on most teams nowadays don't stay with teams long enough...or aren't good enough long term...to spend big bucks on getting a jersey for.

now, if you are just buying a replica jersey, then go ahead and get one of a current player. but if you are looking at getting an authentic one, i would look into getting a throwback jersey of montana, young, craig, lott, rice, rathman, any of those great players of the late 80s early 90s.

for this reason, i wear my old montana and young jerseys most of the time.

also, you might want to wait a week or so because i saw this recently: http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=10&entry_id=19824

i would hate to buy a new jersey and then have it switched on me...

a buddy of mine
bought the authentic Matt Cain road jersey 2 years ago when he was wearing #43. He was not thrilled when he switched to #18 after dropping ~$180.

43
is Vintage!

43 show's you're hardcore, You were there from the beginning. I'd love to have a 43 Cain.

It's still a good investment because the road jerseys have the names on them, so nobody can confuse that 43 for anything but serious fandom!

Along the same lines
I had a "Clark #22" home jersey that stretched across dual stardom quite nicely.

I find it funny how younger fans (including my intern) have no idea who either one was.

Are you the same Howie from McC? The Odd CapitaliZation makes me Wonder a Bit.

I am, in fact
The same Howie.

When NN came to be I signed up with the same handle so other cross bloggers would know who I was, but I gave the old sn a new look for its new home by giving it the caps.

And wow, I'm 22 (hey!) and don't even remember Will Clark when he was a Giant, but how any fan older than 10 could fail to at least recognize The Thrill is beyond me. Absolutely amazing.

What kills me is that
I ran into Charlie Hayes at some bar after a game in San Diego, and he assumed (after I recognized him) that I wanted his autograph and used HIS OWN SHARPIE to sign my Will/Jack Clark jersey.

The guys I was with were absolutely floored and could not stop laughing. I still here about how that damn autograph reduced my once fine garment to trash can fodder.

CHARLEY HAYES!!!
That jersey is now, excuse me, fucking priceless.

Oops
I misspelled Charlie. I am now shamed.

Forgive me, oh great Hayes.

Michael Bush
I'm getting me a Michael Bush jersey.

A customized Niner one?
if so, you should be sure to get it with "M. Bush."
