49ers Make first round of cuts

I forgot to mention this yesterday, so here's a thread for a quick discussion of the first round of cuts that the 49ers made yesterday.

Tuesday August 28 is the mandatory date to be at 75 players. The 49ers waived nine players and put two on the IR yesterday:

IR: CJ Brewer and Melvin Oliver

Veteran Cuts: LB Roderick Green, WR Marcus Maxwell, K MacKenzie Hoambrecker, G Nick Steitz.

Rookie Cuts: P Ken Parrish, CB Sammy Joseph, FB Steve Dildine, WR Dominique Ziegler

Coach Nolan did have some specific comments about two of the cuts.

Marcus Maxwell:

"I think it was just more of a case of who we had at the roster than it was with Marcus," said head coach Mike Nolan. "Marcus is a better player today than we drafted him two years ago. He's a hard worker, a great kid and does everything you ask. He's a better player than he was then but we've added a couple of players who are ahead of him at this time."

Roderick Green:

"He's caught in a numbers game just the same," said Nolan. "I do believe Rod is a good player. He's someone we'll keep on our short list if something happens and he may get picked up this week. He's got good pass rush ability. I like Rod. He's just in a situation here with us because of the numbers and because of guys like Parys Haralson, Jay Moore and Tully Banta-Cain, it pushed him back a little bit further."

While I'm disappointed to see Maxwell get cut, I certainly can understand the numbers game. There really was no chance of him making this team unless he simply blew up in training camp. I guarantee he latches on with another team in THIS league (as opposed to the AFL or CFL).

As for Green? Well I thought he had a better chance than Maxwell to make the roster, but still not a big one. The numbers just were not in his favor.
