Open College Football Week 1 Diary

I don't have too much time right now to put up a proper diary on this with my thoughts and comments on the day's events (also, the Cal game just started, so the day has clearly just begun!), but I figure that we're all football fans here and there should be enough interest in the college game to make a worthwhile discussion.

Anyway, I'll keep this quick, but come here to talk about ANYTHING you want to talk about from this weekend of college football. Me, I want to talk about three things:

  1. Appalachian State. WOW. Holy crap! Where do you guys think Michigan falls in the polls after that? Obviously they have ni chance at the title game. Are they really this bad?
  2. Notre Dame. Holy crap they are really this bad. I honestly expected them to play significantly over their heads and put up a good year... but he chips are down, and they are pure trash.
  3. Won't be able to watch most of this Cal game. Can people please help me out with reports on the performances of Longshore, Forsett, and the defense?
That's just me, though. Please  talk about everything, even if you want to talk about how much you hate college football.

And a poll!

I just saw a guy blow a shoulder tackle
On Cal. I used to yell "Tackle him WITH YOUR ARMS!!!" at the field or TV on a weekly basis. Looks like that's going to be a continuing theme this year...

I think it was Thomas DeCoud, too. He's a proud Vallejo product! Even though his page has his hometown lited as something else (I know because I went to school k-8 with him, and then again 13-16).

The michigan loss was amazing
I've been against this Michigan team ever since they almost made the title game last year based strictly on the fact that they weren't Ohio State. That kind of cheap poll voting relly pisses me off (similar reason I absolutely loathe the Texas program and rooted so much harder against Notre Dame the last few years).

Cal just pulled ahead 45-31, so I have a pretty good feeling about things.

And I disagree with you about the Sox. They are one of my least favorite teams. Indifferent about the yanks. Go Giants!!!

That is all.

Forsett
It looks like HowTheyScored is totally wrong about Forsett.  He looks like he's got a lot more to him than just speed.  Cal has got a totally legit offense, can't wait to see more of Best.

by methodrampage on Sep 1, 2007 8:34 PM PDT reply actions

Believe me
I'm happy to be wrong about him.

Before this year he only ever showed speed. I'd heard reports that he had gone completely insane with his workouts in the offseason to be ready for the primary role this year, and I'm glad to see that rumours of those workouts don't seem to be exaggerated at all.

Go Bears!

Golden Bears
My roommates are USC alumi and I can't wait for that matchup.  I think Cal's offense will be better than USC's but can Cal's defense stop USC's offense?

After this win
I think the so-called experts are finally going to start joining you in that excitement.

The D definitely looks suspect, but I think it's going to be a lot closer than I've seen most people giving Cal credit for.

re: Forsett
it really displays something about him when at the end of the game, with a lead, and a desire to run down the clock, the Bears are calling his number and pounding on Tennessee's front line.

This guy is a stud. If he can stay healthy, it looks like he could have a future in this game. He also sounds like a good individual.

good day
got a great ass groove going in the couch.  sad to see my wahoos get spanked by Wyoming.  Looks like another down year in Charlottesville.

cal offense looked great, jackson is an absolute stud and I think forsett will hold things down no problem. the other receivers looked good too. longshore looks like a legitimate player.  not so sure about the defense.  hope the guy who got hurt is ok.

michigan, wow.  I have always kinda liked michigan for no good reason so I can't say I was happy about it, but it's still fun to see such a stunning upset.

Bring back the classic Uni's!

Forsett
looked very servicable (not Marshawn, but who is) and DeSean is a stallion. Longshore looks mature enough to coast through the conference schedule without soiling the sheets.

I'd like to see more of this defense before I can start dreaming BCS for this team, but I wouldn't mind seeing them in person at the Holiday Bowl again (which is sure to piss HowTheyScored off).

+1
to Howie for a light NCAA thread/recap on this site. Kinda like attending a ice cream social when your rowdy neighbor shows up with a handle of Jack Daniels, I was thinking of doing the same but didn't want to impose on the NFL foundation fooch has so nicely laid here.

open threads
Glad somebody got a thread up.  I'd like to try and get one up on the main page occasionally, but that's what the diaries are most definitely for.  If there's a big event going on, the Open Thread is always a diary option.

Maybe we'll get a Cal national title game thread after yesterday.  While Cal struggled to stop Tennessee at times, they always seemed to be one step ahead of them from the minute they ran that fumble back.

Since USC has been more of a national power than regionalized, I think recently the East Coast has seen Cal as the embodiment of West Coast finesse football, even though they've always had a great running game.  Justin Forsett ran OVER UT all day long, which was huge.  Combine that with great special teams and a really nice passing game and this was a complete offensive performance by Cal.

WOW.
So we were 75% wrong.

Michigan is out of BOTH polls, and Cal is in the top ten in both.

I know we didn't vote on the Cal thing, but I thought it was worth mentioning (for me especially, as my diploma arrived this afternoon).

But Michigan is OUT of the top 25. I think that's a bit of an overreaction for a number of reasons.

  1. Appalachian State is actually a pretty good team. They shouldn't be in Michigan's league, but they could play at the Div 1A level with a lot of teams. I bet they would cream Stanford.
  2. Michigan was not playing Michigan football until close to the 4th quarter. Mike Hart had how many yards in the last 20 minutes??? Appalachian State held on at the end, and even came from behind, which is embarrasing for the Wolverines, BUT if the game had gone for four quarters the way it went for the last 20 minutes, this wouldn't have even been close.
Michigan will not play their C game again this year. No, I don't think they should be a top 20 team after that. But I think they deserve the benefit of the doubt for top 25 for at least a week.

Holy Moly, though.

Oh, and breaking news, USC is first.

by howtheyscored on Sep 4, 2007 10:59 PM PDT reply actions

What's it matter?
So what if Michigan is out of the Top 25 for a week.  They haven't done anything to prove that they are a Top 25 team this week.  What's wrong with making them prove they belong in the Top 25 by actually winning a game first?

This all goes back to ranking teams before the seasons starts.  I get the idea behind it but it still makes little sense.  Why not start with a clean slate and rank your Top 25 based on the Week 1 performances?  There's no way USC played like a top 10 team let alone the best in country last week, so why not make them/someone earn that spot?  The Top 25 is an ever evolving list anyways but it seems like top teams pretty much have a strangle hold on their preseason rankings until they lose.  I guess everyone loves a concensus #1.

On a side note, if App St. has been so dominate at the Championship Subdivision of college football (1-AA) why don't they get bumped into the Bowl Subdivision (1-A)?  Obviosly there are some schools that have built programs in 1-AA that are better than 1-A programs.  I think Utah St. won like 1 game last year, surely there's a 1-AA team that deserves to be in the Bowl Subdivision more than them.
