Open College Football Week 1 Diary
I don't have too much time right now to put up a proper diary on this with my thoughts and comments on the day's events (also, the Cal game just started, so the day has clearly just begun!), but I figure that we're all football fans here and there should be enough interest in the college game to make a worthwhile discussion.
Anyway, I'll keep this quick, but come here to talk about ANYTHING you want to talk about from this weekend of college football. Me, I want to talk about three things:
- Appalachian State. WOW. Holy crap! Where do you guys think Michigan falls in the polls after that? Obviously they have ni chance at the title game. Are they really this bad?
- Notre Dame. Holy crap they are really this bad. I honestly expected them to play significantly over their heads and put up a good year... but he chips are down, and they are pure trash.
- Won't be able to watch most of this Cal game. Can people please help me out with reports on the performances of Longshore, Forsett, and the defense?
And a poll!
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

I just saw a guy blow a shoulder tackle
I think it was Thomas DeCoud, too. He's a proud Vallejo product! Even though his page has his hometown lited as something else (I know because I went to school k-8 with him, and then again 13-16).
College Math
I like this Rulan Davis dude

The michigan loss was amazing
Cal just pulled ahead 45-31, so I have a pretty good feeling about things.

And I disagree with you about the Sox. They are one of my least favorite teams. Indifferent about the yanks. Go Giants!!!
That is all.

Forsett
Believe me
Before this year he only ever showed speed. I'd heard reports that he had gone completely insane with his workouts in the offseason to be ready for the primary role this year, and I'm glad to see that rumours of those workouts don't seem to be exaggerated at all.
Go Bears!

After this win
The D definitely looks suspect, but I think it's going to be a lot closer than I've seen most people giving Cal credit for.

re: Forsett
This guy is a stud. If he can stay healthy, it looks like he could have a future in this game. He also sounds like a good individual.

good day
cal offense looked great, jackson is an absolute stud and I think forsett will hold things down no problem. the other receivers looked good too. longshore looks like a legitimate player. not so sure about the defense. hope the guy who got hurt is ok.
michigan, wow. I have always kinda liked michigan for no good reason so I can't say I was happy about it, but it's still fun to see such a stunning upset.
Forsett
I'd like to see more of this defense before I can start dreaming BCS for this team, but I wouldn't mind seeing them in person at the Holiday Bowl again (which is sure to piss HowTheyScored off).
2007 vs. TEN > 2006 @ TEN
Fresno State 24, Sac State 7 FTW....go Dawgs!
+1
open threads
Maybe we'll get a Cal national title game thread after yesterday. While Cal struggled to stop Tennessee at times, they always seemed to be one step ahead of them from the minute they ran that fumble back.
Since USC has been more of a national power than regionalized, I think recently the East Coast has seen Cal as the embodiment of West Coast finesse football, even though they've always had a great running game. Justin Forsett ran OVER UT all day long, which was huge. Combine that with great special teams and a really nice passing game and this was a complete offensive performance by Cal.

WOW.
Michigan is out of BOTH polls, and Cal is in the top ten in both.
I know we didn't vote on the Cal thing, but I thought it was worth mentioning (for me especially, as my diploma arrived this afternoon).
But Michigan is OUT of the top 25. I think that's a bit of an overreaction for a number of reasons.
- Appalachian State is actually a pretty good team. They shouldn't be in Michigan's league, but they could play at the Div 1A level with a lot of teams. I bet they would cream Stanford.
- Michigan was not playing Michigan football until close to the 4th quarter. Mike Hart had how many yards in the last 20 minutes??? Appalachian State held on at the end, and even came from behind, which is embarrasing for the Wolverines, BUT if the game had gone for four quarters the way it went for the last 20 minutes, this wouldn't have even been close.
Holy Moly, though.
Oh, and breaking news, USC is first.
What's it matter?
This all goes back to ranking teams before the seasons starts. I get the idea behind it but it still makes little sense. Why not start with a clean slate and rank your Top 25 based on the Week 1 performances? There's no way USC played like a top 10 team let alone the best in country last week, so why not make them/someone earn that spot? The Top 25 is an ever evolving list anyways but it seems like top teams pretty much have a strangle hold on their preseason rankings until they lose. I guess everyone loves a concensus #1.
On a side note, if App St. has been so dominate at the Championship Subdivision of college football (1-AA) why don't they get bumped into the Bowl Subdivision (1-A)? Obviosly there are some schools that have built programs in 1-AA that are better than 1-A programs. I think Utah St. won like 1 game last year, surely there's a 1-AA team that deserves to be in the Bowl Subdivision more than them.
