McNabb Comments

Basically, I think it's all a bunch of BS, but then I ran across his comments today about specifics and I am now of the opinion that he just doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about.

He said:

"I never said Peyton doesn't get criticized. I never said Carson doesn't get criticized. I never said Tom doesn't get criticized, because they do," McNabb said. "They talked about Peyton not winning the big game. They talked about Tom Brady and his baby and girlfriend. We get criticized a little differently."

Pressed for specific examples, McNabb pointed to being a running quarterback.

"Nobody ever talked to Steve Young about the running quarterback situation and Jake Plummer," he said. [emphasis added]

McNabb has always been sensitive about being labeled a running quarterback. He considers himself someone who passes first and runs only out of necessity.

"You wouldn't ask somebody else the questions we get asked," McNabb said, declining to reveal those questions.

I don't live in Philly and don't follow McNabb daily, but I seriously doubt that he's been called out as a "running QB" to the extent that STEVE FUCKING YOUNG was. I mean, for years, that's all we heard about Steve. Hell, Steve also got criticized for the offense not being suitable for left-handed passers (before it was changed). The bottom line for most of us, was that he wasn't Joe and didn't deliver the big prize. But there's no question that Steve had "to do a little extra" to win over the fans and the media, which was, of course, winning the damn Super Bowl and that was after winning an MVP and leading us to 3 straight conference title games.

Either McNabb just said something vapid when put on the spot or he is completely ignorant of what the hell he's talking about. Either way he is just a whiny little bitch and I'm tired of his act.

Sorry for the profanity, but fuck!

The really twisted thing about it
Is that McNabb has actually been battling criticism for most of career for NOT taking advantage of his legs as well as he could!

I've never actually heard him get criticized FOR his running.

I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but this seems pretty vivid to me.

Disagree a little
McNabb's had a pretty awesome career, and is a very high quality NFL quarterback. He's always handled himself pretty exceptionally in the past, and considering that it's a little mystifying why he used the race card this time.

Right now he's still very hurt, and it's murdering his mobility and his mechanics so none of his throws are coming off well. He is playing poorly, but it should correct itself as he heals.

That said, he is being a dumbass, in the present tense. I've seen enough of him to know that he isn't one in general, but he's really firing on all cylinders with this remark. The only thing I can say is that the pressure in Philly from the fans and the coaches has finally gotten to him as Kolb is in the wings and he's playing the worst football of his life. Somehow, though, that's not a satisfying explanation.

It really does mystify me. He's always known the right thing to say and the right way to conduct himself. I don't know why a little extra adversity would suddenly compell him to say something so polarizing, so open to criticism, and so full of holes (for every truth in it, there's probably two holes to be found).

There is truth to the idea that black quarterbacks are still now even held to a different standard from white quarterbacks, but to think that any of that plays into the criticism that he is getting now for his performance and health is just foolish, and for him to so much as imply it - much less say it directly - is particularly stupid.

McNabb
McNabb has endured some very public racial criticism.  Interestingly, it's been from both blacks and whites.  The two most well know incidents were the Rush Limbaugh comments about how he gets a free pass as a QB because he's black (I think that was the gist of his comments) and the President of the Philadelphia branch of the NAACP basically saying he turned his back on all black athletes when he stopped running so much (along with questioning his leadership ability and saying he should have given some of his money back to help sign T.O. and Westbrook).  Both of these guys I think are in the deep end of the retard pool.

Given all that, I also agree McNabb is being pretty stupid here.  At the very least, it's a, "WTF, where did that come from" moment.  I think, for the most part, what he says is a stupid generalization.  Most people don't give a fuck what color his skin is, they care whether or not he's a good QB.  Sure, some people still do care about race, but I think it's a dwindling minority.

We?
McNabb's comments in of themselves are extremely steriotypical and borderline racist, both about the media and who ever he thinks "we" is.  And I'm pretty sure he's failed to realize a couple of key points about criticism.
  1.  The QB is the most criticized position in the NFL, that's why they make the big bucks.  Grossman gets ripped a new one every week, Plummer got benched in Denver for a rookie eventhough he clearly wasn't ready (Oh noes, better watch out for Kolb).  Bottom line, if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen.
  2.  Philidelphia is not the City of Brotherly Love, the fans are ruthless to everyone.  They didn't like you from day one and you haven't won a Super Bowl so they still don't like you and that's just how it is in Philly.
  3.  Your best shot at a Super Bowl is catching for your NFC East rival and doesn't seem to be taking any exception to his current QB.  You couldn't get along with TO, thusly pissing your shot at another Super Bowl away thusly causing to contiunually infer the wrath of Philly fans.
I've got a couple more points but who really gives a damn.

I'm not sure
we should blame McNabb for not being able to get along with T.O.  I think maybe we should blame T.O. for not being able to get along with anybody.

Still, I see where you're coming from... kind of.

Bring back the classic Uni's!

If you think...
McNabb isn't considered a more "athetic, running" QB because he's black, you are living on a different planet.

In baseball, when was the last time you saw a black guy called "scrappy" or "gritty".

This doesn't make McNabb, or his critics right (or wrong), but to say there is no bias or stereotype of black QBs in the NFL is totally ridiculous.

Here's another (baseball again) example:  During the Japan -Cuba series a couple years (1?) ago, the announcers - HONESTLY - referred to the Cuban team as "firey" and the Japanese team as "clever and strategic" (but not inscrutable...)

Athetic
If you think...
McNabb isn't considered a more "athetic, running" QB because he's black, you are living on a different planet.

Honestly, I don't think that, he doesn't look very speedy either.  I think McNabb is a considered a more "athletic, running" QB because he has proved that he possesses that skill set.  Ryan Leaf was white but that didn't make him a "heady" QB.  Now if McNabb is being criticized because he is capitalizing on his abilities, which for him one of them happens to be his rushing ability, it has little to do with being black.

Leftwich is anything but a running QB.  Doug Williams won a Super Bowl while being black and not much of a scrambling threat.  Charlie Batch and Rodney Peete weren't playmakers.  Jamarcus Russell is going to be know a hell of a lot more for his cannon that how fleet-a-foot he is.

Is it not conceivable that "they", as McNabb would wish me to group "them", aren't that good and that's why they get criticized?  Is McNabb a top 10 QB?  Sure.  Is Tavaris Jackson?  No.  Is Jason Campbell?  Not yet.  Is Steve McNair?  No.  David Garrard?  No.  Most of these guys are average/serviceable QBs which I highly doubt get criticized any more than Alex Smith, Rex Grossman, Trent Green, Philip Rivers, Tony Romo, etc.  Actually take Romo off that list he's a top 10 QB in my book and better than McNabb.  But did Romo bitch and whine to the media when he was highly criticized last year?

You miss the point.  Sure, you might not think of him that way.  Sure, there are plenty of immobile black QBs and runnin' white guy.  BUT the bias still exists.

by zenbitz on Sep 21, 2007 10:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Well
While I think that prejudice is obviously still a problem for black quarterbacks in much the way you describe, I think the problem here is that NcNabb is coming out of NOWHERE with it.

All of the criticism that he's getting NOW that brought this on has to do with the frustrations with his health and performance since he lost the Super Bowl, which has exploded into (and is nicely epitomized by) the 1-7 (something like that) going back to before his last injury and the crapfest performance since his return. What he's dealing with now has NOTHING to do with race. It has to do with an unforgiving fanbase and, their frustrations with a failure to stay on the field and win, and the organization's pressure by drafting the heir apparent because of the first two.

Donovan is saying things that have truth to them, but they're coming out from so far up his ass it's just not worth touching them this time.
