Last Behind the Steel Curtain post

Has anybody read this crap?

http://www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/story/2007/9/21/65716/0443

Let me recap:

  • Alex Smith Sucks, just contain him in the pocket. He is so bad you probably won't see the Pitt D in a nickel or dime until they play the Cards next week.
  • Gore won't do much against their NT.
  • Willis is just a rookie, Heath Miller is gonna leave him in the dust.
  • Our cb's aren't very good.
  • Davis sucks, he shouldn;t be complaining about his role in our offense.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

In the realm of brilliance
Just went to it for the first time. I've been avoiding it... but this ticks me.
And their third corner, Spencer from Pitt, ain't no Champ Bailey

Our THIRD corner? Champ Bailey??? Spencer's better than most second corners in the league, and has been quietly putting up another strong season in coverage! I'm sure he can handle their third not crappiest receiver, and then some.

haha
-Alex Smith can't beat this team with his arm. He's not an accurate passer, doesn't have the arm to consistently hit the deep outs and has happy feet in the pocket. In fact, he can probably cause more trouble for the Steelers this week with his legs. Expect the Wizard to send the hounds as usual, but have them maintain their rush lanes to keep Smith in the pocket. You probably won't see Lebeau's "Big" 4-2-5 and 4-1-6 package until next week in Arizona or the following week against Seattle when they try to spread the field.

Isn't accurate?  If the 49ers haven't had all of the drops they've had, his completion percentage would probably be mid to high 60s.  Throughout the entire game last week, I think only two passes missed his receivers (from what I've read).  If that isn't accurate, I don't know what else is.
-Nate Clements and Hines Ward will be worth the price of admission. I'll call this a standoff. However, I'll take Santonio Holmes one-on-one against Walt Harris any day of the week and on Saturday and Sunday. And their third corner, Spencer from Pitt, ain't no Champ Bailey.

It's kind of funny that they talk about how good Clements is but then say Harris vs is (unproven) Holmes is lopsided.  Also, it's obvious Spencer isn't Champ Bailey, but as a third corner, against a third WR?  The "point" is just goofy".

I totally understand homer-ism and fan-dome and all, but sometimes it goes way too far.  I mean, at least know your opponent before you start "clowning" them.  The funny part is, he/she even admits that he/she knows little about the 49ers.

I honestly think this game could very well shake out to be a lot closer than many have predicted.

Frankly (!!)
I haven't seen Willis overpursue the run or fall victim to play action all year, and he's been impressive in coverage, too, just shy of at least one pick against the Rams.

It's not that what he says isn't grounded in some fact. I mean, the Steelers are by all accounts the better team this week. But he's painting a HUGE talent gap based on Roethlesberger and the defense tearing apart two of the worst teams in the league, and making some uninformed statements about some of our key players that also bely how close the game is likely to be.

And
The three comments in that are even worse. Although the middle one is almost within reason.

NFC defense
I find it kind of funny how many comments I've read during the past week talk about how bad the NFC is.  Granted, there are more "good" AFC teams, but when these comments are made, they sound like teams are bad BECAUSE they're in the NFC.

I don't know about these people, but I happen to believe the Bears and Cowboys have two of the better defenses in the league, definitely above most AFC teams.

And it's not exactly
like Baseball where there is actually a difference in the leagues and a competition wall during the season. These teams all play each other during the season. During the regular season, the NFL plays a lot more like one conference with eight divisions than two separate conferences. It's just dumb luck that right now the AFC has more of the stronger teams.

Dumb luck
As I mentioned previously in one of these threads/diaries, I'm reading The Education of a Coach by David Halberstam.  The book is basically about Bill Belichick's rise through the NFL.  If he hadn't been fired by the Browns a few years back, he wouldn't have become Bill Parcells' assistant (for a second time) in New England.  I think that second time around is what got Robert Kraft (owner of the Pats) to notice him, and eventually turn him into the head coach.

So yeah.  Depending on how you look at it, luck can do some crazy things in this league.  Then again, I guess it wouldn't have mattered either way if he stayed with the Browns, as the Browns are an AFC team, too.

first of all...
thanks for checking out the site and responding. however, don't pin those thoughts on me...that was a post made by a reader of mine, i said i dont know much about SF so I didnt weigh into heavily, but instead left it to someone who felt they knew a bit about yalls team.

i've given SF nothing but respect this season, saying they look like they're finally ready to start winning some close games.

good luck to you guys this weekend!

Apologies for any offenses
I like to think that any comments made were directed at the specific comments and their makers, and not as pan-BehindtheSteelCurtain judgements. And certainly with the understanding that you guys are, of course, Steelers fans on a Steelers blog.

Just defending our territory in our own house! This will all be worked out Sunday, anyway. We'll see who gets the bragging rights!

No Big deal
And I respect you guys sticking up for your team...the only thing that peeved me was when sfgfan said, 'he/she admitted to not knowing anything about the 49ers.' Well if you actually read the post made on my site, you'd realize that I SAID I DONT KNOW anything about the 49ers and am therefore turning over the floor to somebody who does. Homerism and defending one's team is ok...not paying attention to details then blasting others is not.

Anyway, like you said, should be fun on Sunday. And from what I know about Fooch, you guys are generally a well-educated, intelligent fanbase/community worthy of a winning team. Keep it up and best of luck to you (besides this week) for the rest of the season!

re
Whatever dude.
I thought you said you didn't know a thing about the 49ers, yet you are making predictions on going 3-0 like you said you weren't. That's okay, liar.

"Have great weekends and we'll reconvene on Sunday during and after the game to talk about our first 3-0 start in 15 years!"

Have fun in gotham city!

correction
Just a quick correction (if I'm not mistaken): I believe it was one of his readers making that prediction in that front page post. I'm all for trash talking between the sites, but just wanted to make sure we're clear on who is saying what on the other site. I'm worried about this game, but still hopefully, which will be reflected in my Steelers-49ers pick (to be posted later tonight).

Thanks for correcting my correction. We'll just make up for it with a win tomorrow.
