Chad Johnson

Is he falling out of the hearts of Cinci?  I hear him talking about his situation in Cinci on Mike&Mike and it sounds like there is a rift between him and his team/coaches.  If there is such a rift, we should try to make a trade.  I don't even know what you offer them, but they need help on defense so maybe we could find something they want.

If we traded for a true #1 reciever like Ocho-Cinco, we could focus our draft and free agency on linemen.

Thoughts?

Chad Johnson
Would I love to have Chad Johnson?  Hell yeah.  Do I think it's at all feasible?  No.

I doubt Cincinnati is going to dump Chad just for the sake of dumping him like the Raiders did with Moss.  So I'd have to believe the price (draft picks) is going to be pretty high and considering we're still kind of in the rebuilding phase our draft picks are probably more important to the team than one stud WR.

With that being said, I also think there are teams in better positions than the Niners to deal for Chad.  Off the top of my head, Jacksonville for one.  They're already a playoff team and really have no viable option for a #1 WR.  If they added Chad along with a healthy Mike Walker, the Jacksonville passing attack could be pretty damn legit.  Tennessee is another playoff team that desperate needs a playmaking WR.

It would just seem to me that it would be easier for Jacksonville or Tennessee to give up the draft picks necessary to land Johnson as they have less "holes" to fill than the Niners.  Basically, Chad Johnson wouldn't be the one pissing piece needed to put us in Super Bowl contention.

It might not be feasable, but...
I was thinking more of trading players for Chad, not picks.  Maybe 'A' pick, but not more than one.

Cincy has an abysmal defense.  Maybe we could throw a package like D.Smith, A.Franklin and P.Haralson or something of that ilk at Cinci for Chad.  They have Houshman as a #1 and Henry as a #2 so they really wouldn't be taking a huge hit at WR by making a trade.

Two issues
  1. Trading players is tough in the NFL due to accelerating bonus' (bonusii?) in trades.
  2. You're proposed trade is quantity for quality, which only works if you're trading with the Orioles.   The Niners are probably going to ask Derek Smith to retire, that's how bad he's gotten, and Haralson and Franklin aren't anything special.
We are not who I thought we were.

by marcello on Jan 11, 2008 1:54 PM PST up reply actions

Seriously?
First off, the Niners can't trade Franklin as he's their only real NT.  So scratch him.

Secondly, I think you're trading players from a 3-4 defense into a 4-3 defense which isn't always going to work.

Thirdly, Derek Smith is nearly 33 and nothing more than a league average ILB.  Why would they want him?  Landon Johnson is already a better player.

Fourthly, Haralson is far from an impact player, seeing as he was a bench player prior to injuries for the Niners.  And if I'm not mistaken barely made the team.

Basically, you packaging 3 no better than league average players together for Chad Johnson?  Why would they do this?  I mean seriously if Jacksonville or Tennessee strolled up and said, "I'll give you a 3rd round pick for Chad Johnson" it would be a better deal for Cincinnati than Franklin, Smith and Haralson.  The only defensive player we have that they might want would be Willis and we're not trading him for Chad Johnson.

You can probably write this whole this off as a pipe dream.

#1 Pick
I see a deal for Johnson as a possibility for three reasons.
  1. Nolan's on the hot seat.  This off-season isn't about continuing to build for the future, it's about winning the NFC West.
  2. Martz will want a premier receiver.  Say what you will about Mike Furry and Kevin Curtis.  Those guys are worthless in Mike Martz's offense without Roy Williams and Tory Holt.  I see Martz pushing hard for a real weapon at receiver.
  3. The 9ers 1st pick is going to be essentially the same as their 2nd pick.  Give one of those picks to Cincy and everybody's happy.

Picks...
I would give the niners 2nd rounder + their 4th rounder for Johnson.

#1- Niners have two 4th round picks from last year coming back from injury who now at least know the play book.

#2- It would preserve the 1st and 3rd round picks which could be used to bolster the D-line.

I fully agree that Martz has made mediocre players look like stars but it has a lot to do with your point about Williams, Holt and Bruce. The Niners really need a guy like Johnson to make this whole thing work but they need to save enough cash to sign Briggs and some DL meat.

I agree with Kev
Well said. I don't see Cincy giving up Ocho Cinco for a few backups.

What it would take
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/rumors/post/Dolphins-interested-in-Cincy-s-Chad-Johnson-?urn=nfl,59805

if thats correct at all, then it would take the niners a 3rd rounder and most likely a fourth rounder as well

i think it would be worth it.... trading potentially a decent player (3rd round) for a guy who's shown hes got mad skills

DJax and Hill
Would I trade DJax and Hill for Chad Johnson?  Hell yeah.  I mean afterall, those were our 3rd and 4th round selections last year.

Not even accidentally comparable to Moss
This situation isn't at all like the Moss situation.  Moss dogged it in LA something fierce.  He looked terrible, rarely played hard, and just gave up worse than the entire LA Raiders team.

Chad Johnson still performs (1400 yards last year versus Moss' 530 in 2006).  If Cincy is smart, they'd sell high now and get a serious haul in return for Chad.  If Johnson dogs it next year, they'll have waited too long to trade him and his trade value drops.

Regardless, they already have two stud receivers in Housh and Henry.  I'd play them and look to steal another team's draft picks like crazy.  If I'm the Cincy GM, I don't think the Niners would at all have what I'm looking for (high first round pick this year, maybe next too).  With our first rounder this year being so late in the draft, I'd look to trade with Miami or someone of that ilk.  In fact, Miami would probably be a perfect fit, since they're likely to suck again next year too.

No...
No, I'm pretty sure the team I hate is still in LA.  It's easier to hate them that way.  Otherwise, it's just too close to home.

is he even on the block?
if so I say it makes perfect sense to go after him.  If Miami can get him with a 3rd rounder I say we offer a high second round pick and maybe a 4th (like someone else suggested).  Maybe just the 2nd rounder could get it done.  I'd take a low first round pick and Chad Johnson over a low first and high second.

Chad Johnson
 New to the page.

 Cool and accurate comments.
As far as Chad Johnson's value... what did the CrapHawk's give up to get Dion Branch? Chad is a/ the premier reciever, and I'm afraid it's going to take a 1st rounder. I agree with Baekneck that probably J-Ville or the Titans have the picks that he's worth.
But I would be up for trading our 1st rounder for him. We can fill the D-Line in the 2nd round, linebacker via trade.O-Line 3rd?
