Mercury News catfight

If you need a good laugh, take a look at Mark Purdy & Tim Kawakami's columns from Tuesday, each addressing the possibility of the 49ers moving to Santa Clara.  Kawakami guarantees that the Yorks won't be able to accomplish the stadium deal.  Purdy, on the other hand, calls upon Niner fans need to pray the Santa Clara deal goes through, claiming that if it doesn't work out the Yorks will end up moving the team to Los Angeles.

Each columnist finds the other's position ridiculous, and each makes it a point to insult his colleague in print.  It's the mediocre sports journalism equivalent of the out-of-the-blue insults being thrown back and forth by Hillary & Barack.

You can find links to the two articles on my blog from yesterday:

While you're at it, drop a comment on whether you think either of them are on to something & where instinct tells you this might be headed.  Any Santa Clara residents out there who can tell me which direction city voters would lean on public financing of a stadium?  Where will the Niners be playing in ten years -- Candlestick, a new stadium in San Fran or Santa Clara, or (shudder) LA...

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

santa clara
I'll comment more a little later, but for now, Santa Clara apparently OKed the 49ers feasibility study and will enter into negotiations with the 49ers.  Interesting stuff.

Re: santa clara
The deal works just fine for the city council, which is a start, but I know it has to go to the voting public as well.  I lived the past several years in the Seattle area, where voters from more than one city rejected a taxpayer-funded arena for the Sonics, and before you know it the team had filed paperwork to move to Oklahoma.

I'm wondering if the people of Santa Clara are more open to the idea of taxpayer-funded professional sports facilities than my former neighbors in the Northwest.

Ehh
After reading those two articles I felt that they weren't truly insulting each other.  It seemed more like gentle ribbing to me.

A Little OT
But while I am Bay Area originally, I'm in LA now and I'm getting sick of us being deprived of a team because it is the NFL's best interest to keep us the go to threat. One of the biggest markets anywhere, and while I wouldn't follow or root for the home team, I'd like to celebrate a Bay Area victory Monday mornings! Have something to rub back in the faces of Niner haters...

But seriously. If the NFL isn't going to be serious about sending a team this way, they should just stop using us as the phantom bargaining chip in their back pocket. No other sport (or industry, for that matter) treats LA like the redheaded stepchild the NFL apparently thinks we are.
