FB Zak Keasey to go on IR with arm injury

Zak Keasey injured his arm in yesterday's loss to the Eagles and the 49ers announced he will be going on Injured Reserve.  He hasn't been placed there yet, but it will happen once they decide how to fill his roster spot.

Keasey injured his arm early in the game, which led to a big increase in Michael Robinson playing time.  Given his performance at times, this could end up being a good thing for the offense, although certainly bad for Keasey.  Keasey apparently tore a biceps tendon.

The 49ers have numerous options to plug in at fullback including Michael Robinson, Billy Bajema and Delanie Walker.  Of the three, Bajema would probably be the best in terms of the traditional blocking concerns of a fullback.  Robinson and Walker can certainly block, but they would appear to bring more to the table in terms of actually moving the ball on their own.

The 49ers currently have two players they can stick on the IR in Keasey and Shawntae Spencer.  They were waiting to move Spencer because there was no immediate need on the roster for a spot.  I'm curious to see what they add now that Keasey has also gone down.

oh well

No big loss, I think. Keasy has been meh-to-okay catching the ball, poor in pass protection and awful in run blocking all year.

Walker got a lot of time as an H-back on Sunday, and I liked what I saw out of MRob. Taking snaps away from Keasy and giving them to those two would have been the best thing for the offense, regardless of injury. The fact that Keasy is hurt just seems to force our hand.

I said it before...

… and I’ll say it again: I think that Robinson/Walker could have filled the H-back/Fullback role very well. Keasey’s roster spot could have very well gone to someone else.

hey fooch...

you going to do a post about nolan’s presser today? i’m new here, so i don’t know if that’s a weekly post or not. being a sport psych and stats guy, i was in disbelief watching it, what with all of his pathological denial and assertions that were contrary to objective fact (e.g., “we got pressure” or “we have an outsanding replay system”). we got pressure? 0 sacks and 0 qb hits?? outstanding replay system??? you’re 18 of 52 dude!!! anway, there were so many examples of this during his 30-minute denial fest that i’ve got a point-by-point comment about it. i just don’t want to waste it on this keasey post if you’re going to do a presser analysis post later.

thanks, and keep up the good work.

press conference

I’ll shoot you an email as well in case you don’t see this, but I have to cut for a little while. Would you be able to post a FanPost about Nolan’s press conference? On the main page, on the top left, you can click on New FanPost. From there you can type in what you need and post it. It’ll show on the right side with the rest of the FanPosts.

good idea

I like that idea too

Simply by pulling on both ends, Patrick Willis can stretch diamonds back into coal

why?

He can’t play fullback, and there are guys on the bench who run the ball, block and just flatout play better than Clayton.

Use the roster spot on something we need – like depth at DB or OLB.

OLB or DB

I think they front office and coaching staff feel they have enough active DBs, otherwise they would have IR’d Spencer already.

As for OLB, who else can they promote and/or sign? They did bring in a couple of younger guys to the practice squad, but it may be best to keep them on the practice squad until after the 8th week or whatever it is to maintain practice squad eligibility for next season.

I guess it also makes sense not to add Clayton. I’m just not sure how else they’re going to use that roster spot. Maybe activate an extra offensive or defensive lineman?
