Week 6 Prediction Games: The Results
This has been a week of things happening that I didn't see coming. The Browns beat the Giants. I didn't see that coming. I discovered that Chris Rock has a brother who looks quite a lot like him, except more GQ, and who is also some sort of comedian and who has some show on Comedy Central. It's kind of like Eddie Murphy's brother, except without a memorable skit on the Chappelle Show. I didn't see that coming.
I'm not really going anywhere with that. It's just happenstance that I saw the commercial for the Tony Rock show before I started this writeup. Just like it's happenstance that Chris Rock's Bigger and Blacker is playing on TV right now. It seemed like the world was telling me that this was a Rock family sort of night. Or, at least, Comedy Central was telling me that.
But I can't really lay down some quotes from Bigger and Blacker. It's just not appropriate. On second thought, maybe I just should have written this thing about Little Big Planet. There's nothing inappropriate about that game. Heck, it's downright cute! It's just happenstance that a Little Big Planet commercial just went by on the TV a few seconds ago.
Now, at first glance, it appears that I'm writing this intro stream-of-consciousness-style based on whatever happens to be on TV, that I have no focus, that I'm just plain not trying. But that's only half true.
In reality, I have this whole thing tied together. I bet you didn't see that coming (see, I tied it together right there).
Now, let's see what we didn't see coming with the results*.

Let me tell you something. I ran these numbers yesterday, and I had no idea how much movement happened this week. I knew we had a lot of players taking home at least 3 points, but I didn't foresee a first-week player stealing 9 points to jump right into the thick of a group of players who have been plugging away every week.
But there was a lot of movement. Two players jumped into the top ten, where they hadn't been before. Congratulations are due to good as gold and to Vote4Gore for taking that step. Then I look and I see other players who had really good weeks: Ninerfromacrossthepond, Niner Fan Lost in WI, 49erLou, Mike Hawk, JerseyNinerFan, sando8297... all these players can be proud of the week's they had.
Even wjackalope, who only scored in one game, managed something special by becoming the first player to go over 30.
And then there was me and Fooch. I only mention us today because I always mention us. After my [mumble] bad week in a row, I'm going to be out of the top ten next week if I don't actually, you know, score. And we all know how Fooch is biding his time, but I'm starting to worry that he's waiting too long. I'll give him credit if he plays this ruse straight into week 17, but I just don't know if it's the right strategy. Seems kind of like a Nolan strategy to me.
In any case, The Daily Show is on TV right now and funny stuff is happening, so I'm leaving.
* Frankly, I can't believe you read this far before jumping to the results. Couldn't you tell that I was just spewing crap?
** You're going to drive yourself crazy trying to find the double asterisk above that this is referring to. I win this round.

THERE WAS NO DOUBLE ASTERISK
Can I get a point for noticing that? I need points so very badly.

I think I should have one more point, and sole possession of 4th place, where I will lord over 5th place and below.

oh MAN
I’m happy to take my 3 points for first place in the Atlanta game and call it a week but I was SO CLOSE on two others:
3rd place in San Diego-NE was sancho8297 (18). My score: 21
3rd place in Seattle-Green Bay was marcello (10). My score: 12
3 and 2 points from sneaking into 3rd place. Too bad. I’m wishing I had picked Arizona.

and may I add
I hate predicting the niners will lose, and I hate seeing the niners lose. It makes it even worse when I pick them to lose, they lose, and I don’t even get points in the prediction game as a consolation. That really sucks.

i got 1 point…YAY!
in all serious, i hate it when the 49ers have a 2 score lead going into the 4th qtr, and everyone that didn’t watch the game thinks they got blown out

Exactly.
Except, if you consider the deficit, you can make an argument that they got blown out (to the full extreme sense of the phrase) in the fourth quarter.

another decent showing
moved up 2 spots this week. Maybe this is the week I pick against the Niners and gain some ground on that top spot

hey howie
any chance you could put links to the previous weeks results in each of these posts? Or is there a way we could have those all listed somewhere easy to find? I like to sometimes go back and see where we all were a week or two ago compared to now.

I’ll work on something. The easy way out is to just link to the previous week. It wouldn’t be that hard to go back and find the link for each one, though.

*Call me Stupid*
but I am trying to work out why I had such a good week. As far as I can remember, I only predicted correctly 2 of the 6 winning teams but, I must admit, I haven’t entirely figured out the scoring system. Would be grateful if “howtheyscored” could tell me why I did so well.
by Ninerfromacrossthepond on Oct 15, 2008 6:29 PM PDT 0 recs
it looks like
you had 10 points going into the week, and you earned three points for getting first place in the Niners game to move you up to 13 points. the (12) next to your name in the results for the game represent your “raw score” (that’s a new term for the game) which is the total of the difference between the total points in the game and the total points you predicted plus the difference between the point differential in the game and the point differential you predicted. Read this for a full explanation of the rules.

more explanation
your prediction: Philadelphia @ 49ers- 34-24.
Actual score: 40-26.
So.. actual point total: 66. Your point total: 58. 66 – 58 = 8
So.. actual point total: 66. Your point total: 58. 66 – 58 = 8actual point differential: 14. Your point differential: 10. 14 – 10 = 4
So.. actual point total: 66. Your point total: 58. 66 – 58 = 8actual point differential: 14. Your point differential: 10. 14 – 10 = 4Add the two: 8 + 4 = 12. 12 is your raw score. Your raw score was lower than anybody else’s, earning you first place which is worth 3 points in the game.

What's so significant about 30?
It’s only week 6, but is the 30 point mark like a bench mark for winning? What was the winning score last year?
by albertoleecho on Oct 15, 2008 8:40 PM PDT 0 recs
the only significant thing about 30
is that it’s a multiple of 10.

Pretty much. I like to count by tens. I mentioned the first time somebody hit double digits as well. Mostly, it’s just a talking point. It stands to reason that as long as you’re in first, you’ll be the first person to pass any number this season. I still think it’s fun to point out.
