49ers claim OT Kirk Barton; Latest Injury News
The 49ers claimed offensive tackle Kirk Barton from the Miami Dolphins earlier today, placing Shawntae Spencer on injured reserve to make space on the 53-man roster. Barton was a seventh round draft pick by the Bears and after being part of the final roster cut in training camp, he was claimed by Miami.
Mike Nolan was asked about why grabbing a tackle and he said:
“We weren’t trying to look. We weren’t looking for position. We were just looking for a player we thought had an opportunity to - We’ve had the spot as we’ve had along with Shawntae and basically we were just waiting if something became available that we were interested in. That’s what we were kind of waiting for. We didn’t want to force the issue or anything. This is a player that Scot [McCloughan] was interested in, so we claimed him.”
Along with the news of Barton being signed, Jonas Jennings is likely to be listed as doubtful for Sunday's game. Jennings sat out practice yesterday and today with his shoulder injury. In other injury news:
49ers
Limited Participation in Practice
LB Manny Lawson - Hamstring
FS Mark Roman - Knee (missed all of Wednesday's practice)
CB Donald Strickland - Hip
Giants
Did not Participate in Practice
LB Antonio Pierce - Quadricep
LB Gerris Wilkinson - Knee
Full Participation in Practice
C Shaun O'Hara - Toe
Nolan said that Lawson was likely to be probable for Sunday's game, so we might get him back in action. Given the big time running game of the Giants, we're gonna need a lot more linebackers than normal. Of course, if we stick with the "Big Dud" defense, we really won't need Lawson.

Who is in Control, Nolan or McCloughan?
Let’s take a look at Nolan’s quote cited in Fooch’s article:
"This is a player that Scot [McCloughan] was interested in, so we claimed him."
What Nolan as a matter of fact is stating, he is declaring indirectly that he had no interest in Kirk Barton until McCloughan “came along” and said “let’s pick Barton off the waivers and take a chance on this kid.” So basically here Nolan had no control over the pick-up on the waiver wire, McCloughan expressed his interest in Barton and got him.
I hope a pizza is not ordered that Nolan was interested in, because it probably won’t taste good- it’ll be a bust!
So do we take McCloughan’s word for it and Nolan’s word for it that he was inoblivious to the transaction making upstairs? Pizza was a bust !

mccloughan/nolan dynamic
McCloughan is the GM and is in charge of waiver claims and whatnot. I’d imagine that he and Nolan discuss roster needs on a regular basis (particularly w/the two IR injuries) and Nolan let him know what positions he thought the 49ers could use an extra body at. I didn’t include the quote but Nolan did say they didn’t need a DB to replace Spencer b/c they had plenty already. A tackle makes sense if Jennings is going to miss any more significant time.

Ribbing Nolan
On the McCloughan/Nolan dynamic, you’re right on the two keeping each other abreast of roster needs regularly, and that their conversations probably transpired in those acquisitations, I was ribbing Nolan.
I ribbed Nolan because of his losing record and poor game management, and from the sound bite I grabbed on, I tried to portray Nolan as not having complete control of the ball club.
There is one thing admirable about Nolan, and that is not having controversial players on roster like Pacman Jones (I reverted back to his old name since he reverted back to his old ways), or “the Tank.” He will let go any player who comes up with infractions. Pac Jones begged for another chance only to grin on one side of face and do something foolish in the public. We have players of integrity and of high morale. If there’s dirty laundry to air, that is by sacking the quarterback.

Big Sub.
There is absolutely NO reason to roll out that package as the default package this week. If the Giants go three or four wide, by all means, use it. But the coaching staff had better not use it as their base package, or they’ll have lots of ’splainin to do.
