ESPN Source: 49ers plan to fire Nolan after next game
EDITOR'S NOTE 3:55PM: This certainly is worth promoting to the front page (even though it's in discussion on the page below. When I get home tonight I'll get my thoughts together on this.

all i can say is hallellujah! The only thing that bothers me is, will he prepare the niners for this week, or just screw it since he is gonna get fired anyway. Im hoping he is a class act, and he prepares the team for this big game. But other than that, is Mike Singletary ready to take over as our coach? What do you guys think?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Next game
I think Nolan will prepare to the best of his abilities for the next game. He’s been a pretty stand-up guy on many issues these past few years. He also has to be aware of appearances to the rest of the league, so he doesn’t botch any potential coaching opportunities elsewhere.

Could our FO be any dumber?
I seriously doubt it. You don’t fire a coach in the middle of the season unless if you just got whooped in every contest, and you don’t announce a firing a week in advance.
We have a bunch of monkeys running our team…
I think I pulled my swagger muscle...

are you nuts?
have you seen the nfc lately? lots of talent and lots of very good teams. the 9ers wont make the playoffs anyways with nolan coaching so why not start building now. they are in desperation mode and have to win either way. good move by the FO. look at the rams. the 9ers can’t be any worse with making a coaching change midseason so why not? heck atleast singletary may be more aggressive and actually blitz the opposing quarterback instead of going for the read and react garbage nolan has had a defense with talented players doing.

Michael Smith is a jackass
and his “sources” are no more reliable than mine or yours.
That being said, I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be true anyway. Just…not because that moron said so.

That was kind of my thought.
Literal first thought: “Boy, ESPN sure is going out on a limb with this one!!!”
Really? Sources? Maybe. But it’s not like every ten year old in San Francisco isn’t also predicting this.

aren’t the same ones who kept leaking the Kiffin firing week after week

At this point winning is overrated
I’d rather take the high draft pick than win an extra 2 games. Crabtree in ’09.

Nolan
About time, if it actually happens. I agree with Maveric about the defense, I think the players they have are too good to just sit in coverage and let people pick them apart. I mean Lawson was sitting for two game in a row, only playing special teams. That’s crazy. Let’s see some pressure on the QB finally. I love Singletary for the job too, my worst fear was they would give Martz the position after only being with the team for such a short time.

Hey 49ers_Lifer
I deleted your FanPost, but only because it came after this one and this one had an ESPN source versus an independent site. Nothing personal, just wanted to give you a heads-up.

I stand by my original thoughts on this: Firing Nolan midseason is only worthwhile if Singletary gets the interim job as a chance at an extended on-the-job interview. There’s absolutely no reason to let anybody else who is already in the organization handle this team for the rest of the year, and that includes Mike “My Crazy Uncle” Martz.
Not really my uncle… I’m just very tired and it made me laugh.

Singletary
one the one hand, he’s gonna be a hot coaching commodity this offseason. He was interviewed by the Cowboys and San Diego in 2007 offseason and by all accounts, he came off quite well, though wasn’t extended an offer (it’s hard to tell whether he was interviewed seriously, due to the Rooney Rule, but that’s for another discussion, and I’m assuming he was a legit candidate.)
Anyway, as the interim head coach, he’d probably be the front-runner for the full-time job, especially, if the team rallies and salvages the season. He wouldn’t be some retread who gets an interim job and everyone knows he won’t be there longer than that.
On the other hand, though, he was a Nolan disciple, and that’s gotta be a strike against him. Plus, what has his role been in the recent collapse? He is the asst. head coach, after all.
In the end, though, if he’s his own man (doesn’t coach like Nolan does) and can handle the job, I’d like to see him stay. He’s probably ready.

Jed York's comment re: Nolan
“If I didn’t think Mike was giving us the best opportunity to beat the Seattle Seahawks next week, we’d make a change,” York said. “Mike gives us the best chance to beat the Seattle Seahawks. And that’s what we’re focused on. We’re not going to discuss a coaching change (with the media) at this point, because we’re focused on beating the Seahawks next week.”
Note that he only talks about the Seattle game. Just the fact that he talked about the coach’s job as somehow being tied to individual games is pretty damning. A normal comment about a head coach’s job would be like this: “If I didn’t think Mike was giving us the best opportunity to get to and win the Super Bowl, we’d make a change.”

Thank God
Better to make a defenseive guy HC rather then Martz cause then they can have 2 guys working on the defense, because Martz can handle the offense (I hope)

Pathetic
This is an absolutely pathetic way to handle this situation. Though I am definitely not proud of Nolan’s tenure as a Niner, I am even more disgusted by the way this was handled.

Take it from a Mets fan, it could have been much much worse.
by TexanNiner on Oct 20, 2008 5:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The Mets crumbled two years in a row in Aug/Sep. Randolph was not respected amongst the players. Though I feel your pain being a Mets fan, I think his firing was handled a bit better than Nolan’s.
by SnortingMercury on Oct 20, 2008 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Randolph was around for 1 crumble, and he was fired 1 day after flying from the East Coast to Anaheim and fired at 1am PST, it was much worse.
by TexanNiner on Oct 20, 2008 5:14 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
True, but they were off to a pretty putrid start this season when he was canned, no?
Either way, he was given the tools to succeed. A LOT more than I can say for Mike.
by SnortingMercury on Oct 20, 2008 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Both men were in charge of a group of underachieving players, hopefully the change will effect the 49ers like it did the Mets (.600 the rest of the season).
by TexanNiner on Oct 20, 2008 5:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah but Reyes, Beltran, Delgado, etc., etc., are already head and shoulders respectively over the Niners personnel. J.T. O’Sullivan, Bruce, etc., etc. It’s pretty evident that York wasn’t interested in pursuing high-priced talent. I know Randolph wasn’t necessarily justified either, but I think our management is much more to blame than our coach. Just my opinion.
by SnortingMercury on Oct 20, 2008 5:19 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If you’re going to list the NYM stars, let’s list Gore and Willis too.
But I get your point, either way what we currently have is not working. For the record, Martz is as big of a problem as Nolan is. I just hope the front office figures it out quicker then it took the Lions.

I have trouble believing
stories that say things like:
It is assumed that current defensive coordinator Mike Singletary will assume Nolan’s coaching duties.
Since when has he been DC? Never. This is NOT on ESPN, NFL.com, or SFGate, and Maiocco has nothing up whatsoever.
