49ers fire offensive line coach George Warhop

Lost in the commotion apparently is word that the 49ers also fired their offensive line coach George Warhop.  Assistant offensive line coach Chris Foerster will take over as offensive line coach.

I don't know if this will mean dramatic changes on the offensive line, but again, sometimes change is necessary for changes sake.  The offensive line has shown the ability to be good, but has been wildly inconsistent this season.

Foerster's background (courtesy sf49ers.com):

Years Coaching Background Team
2008-Present Offensive Line San Francisco 49ers
2005-2007 Offensive Line/Assistant Head Coach Baltimore Ravens
2004 Offensive Coordinator Miami Dolphins
2002-2003 Tight Ends Indianapolis Colts
1996-2001 Offensive Line Tampa Bay Buccaneers
1993-1995 Assistant Offensive Line/Tight Ends Minnesota Vikings
1992 Offensive Line University of Minnesota
1988-1991 Assistant Offensive Line/Special Teams Stanford
1983-1988 Offensive Line Colorado State
1982 Graduate Assistant Colorado State

1st thing he needs to do is to do something about Sims.

on obvious passing downs, when D-linemen are teeing off, he can’t block ish. Even Vernon Davis does a better job than him at this.

after the bye, they should have Snyder at RT and put Baas, Rachal, or hell even Sims at LG where quick feet isn’t such an issue; if Wragge is the better option at LG move him there and put one of the 3 at RG.

A year ago when things were at the bottom for the Niners’ offense, I remember seeing a note that Parcells fired Warhop in Dallas because of “inconsistent” line play. Last year it was clear that the line wasn’t playing in harmony and that had a lot to do with the utter failure of Hostler’s offense.

Looking at his employment history, I don’t see him listed as working for Dallas. Anyone know anything about that? Maybe he was there for only a couple of months?

Meanwhile, what does look clear is that Warhop came along with Nolan and Nolan’s loyalty to him helped pave the way to his firing.

Whoops.

So that’s Foerster’s profile. I shouldn’t write anything before my first cup of coffee.

Apparently, the thing about Warhop’s firing at Dallas was right, though.

Anyways, over and out until I’m caffeinated enough.

George Warhop

If you are blaming Warhop your crazy, how about the Quarterback position which has been in trouble for the last three years. Or the fact that 2 years ago Gore was one of top backs in the league before injury slowed him down. Really think if he was a bad coach why would Larry Allen follow him here. The only reason Chris Foerster was hired is thats who Mike Martz , wanted who was let go in Detroit after one year. By the way the Parcells thing in Dallas was wrong from the start. He called Warhop and offered him the job, who at the time was coaching Arizona. If you know like I know Parcells doesn’t value anyones opinion but Parcells. Cause he didn’t bow down he was let go . .

Warhop apologist? How rare.

While I’m sure Warhop was fairly decent as a line coach, the results were never there. Last year’s offensive line was, essentially, the same line as two years ago. Why did they fail so badly? As a matter or fact, most would argue without contention that Staley was a MUCH better RT than Kwame Harris, so last year’s line, on paper, should have been better.

As for Larry Allen, you don’t know why he came here. It could have been the money (no one else really wanted him). It could have also been the fact that he’s from Northern California and salivated at the opportunity to move home? He got to work out from home during the offseason, that alone would be incentive enough for most players.

If I'm not mistaken...

… wasn’t Foerster’s job the “pass protection” aspect of coaching the offensive line? I remember the two of them split the job, but I don’t remember who handled what.

Not mistaken

Warhop was in charge of the run and Foerster the pass.
