Good time for a move?

As much as I really liked Nolan (maybe it was the suit?), I really feel that this was an absolute perfect time for a coaching change. Our next three games are VERY winnable, which really could give this team some momentum with a new voice. The best thing about this move is that we don't have Martz as the new coach, instead inserting a new voice, hopefully finally making this team play a full 60 minutes.

This means absolutely nothing here, but I just went through this with the Mets this year, with roughly the same set-up into an assistant coach taking the reigns midway though the season. They dominated the 2nd half until...well...yea... Man im cursed...

If this team can even win 2 of the next 3, it could really put us in a good position for the rest of this season. Maybe this is just me living in a dream world, but I see so much talent and potential on this team. The scores (other than the Saints game) were not a real showing of how this team played the game. That was an incredibly tough 4 game stretch, and we stayed with some really good teams for most of the game. Lets finish some games and get some wins!

I was pretty shocked

that Martz didn’t take over as head coach. It seemed logical, since he has full command of the offense already, and he could just leave the defense to Singletary and Co…it wouldn’t be much of a transition, really. I am happy, though, that Martz didn’t take over. If the team ended the year with a winning record under him, there would be immense pressure to re-sign him as head coach next year, which we would all probably agree would be a mistake considering his track record.

Martz

Maybe the 49ers feel like they already know what they’ll get with Martz “the head coach.” Trying out Singletary is definitely the only reason to have fired Nolan mid-season.

As a little kid in the mid-80's..

I remember thinking what it would be like to see Singletary as a head coach because it had to happen at some point in his future. I knew it wouldn’t be here because, to me, Bill Walsh was an immortal.

It’s time for Singletary to shine and similar to Fooch’s terms- I’m ‘cautiously optimistic’, however very excited at the same time. He doesn’t have the completely desired experience and also skipped a few rungs in the front office ladder. Given the circumstances right now, I’m glad it’s him. I’m also glad that the Yorks built an escape rout into this one just in case it doesn’t work. I’m giving Singletary every benefit of the doubt that he can steer this ship a little better than we’ve seen lately.

Yup.

Which brings me back to my original post. Does anyone else think that firing Nolan now and putting Singletary in before the Seahawks game a premeditated move to possibly give Singletary a big W in his first game as head coach?

If we do get the win against he hawks, that sets up good feelings through the bye week, then somewhat of a buildup before the Monday night game against the Cards.

I might be stretching it somewhat, but i think this could’ve been the plan all along…

Considering...

… how business minded the 49ers had been previously, a PR move like that wouldn’t be out of the question. It is also quite possible that they planned to give Nolan the opportunity to go out on a high note until someone leaked the firing rumor. If that rumor actually came from a credible source, then why would the 49ers want a head coach who knows he’s on the outs coaching another game?

Nope.

from all the reports, it looks like the plan was to do the conventional thing and fire Nolan after the Seahawks game heading into a bye.

then Michael Smith’s report happened, an emergency meeting occurred and Jed fired him b/c in his own words

“We had hoped to get to the bye week (after Sunday’s home game against Seattle),” he said. “We didn’t think it was fair to the team to let the rumors linger going into an important week for us.”

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/10/20/SPPI13L0U1.DTL

so they canned him b/c of Michael Smith’s report.

Either way, these last 9 games aren’t going to reflect on Singletary. He’s just there to hold this team together and keep the season from falling apart.

These last 9 games are about McClueless. how talented is this team? is it really the 4-6 win team it was under Nolan or is it a 7-9 win team that’s underachieved. if this team doesn’t win at least 4 of it’s remaining games w/ at least 1 upset win, i think they should also get rid of McClueless and start from scratch.
