Most Memorable 49ers Games Ever???
EDITOR'S NOTE 7:52AM: This post went up yesterday, but I like where it's been going and thought I'd move it to the front for some more discussion. I'm curious if there are any particular random games that people loved. Everyone knows about the Super Bowls, the Young-to-TO pass to beat the Packers and the Garrison Hearst run in OT against the Jets. Any other random games that jump out as favorites? One of mine would have to be when Jerry Rice made his return from the blown out knee in 1997. It turned out he returned too quickly, but he scored a TD in the game in which Montana's jersey was retired.
So, welcome to mjy123.

Hey Guys,
I'm new to the site but love what I see so far and can't wait to get more involved.
A question for you though- If you were to think back over the past 30 years or so of Niners football, which individual games stick out most in your minds? Things like huge comebacks, miraculous wins, crazy things that happened in the stands, SuperBowls, conference championships, blunder type games (Leon Lett type things)?
Thanks guys!! Just trying to get some insight into what makes the Niners so special to so many of us!!
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

The most memorable non-super bowl game
has to be the 2002 Wild Card game vs the Giants. The second greatest comeback in NFL playoff history. I remember watching the game with a sleeping baby in the living room and not being able to yell. I was holding a pillow over my face to muffle the sound. When the game ended I couldnt help but screaming and the baby woke up, much to the chagrin of my wife’s friend.

Good call
I like the 2002 Giants game! How bout the 98 wild card game against the Packers. Or I don’t remember the year but when Hearst ran 98 yards for a TD against the Jets in overtime. Think it was 98 also but don’t quote me.

My signature on this site was in reference to that game for a very long time. It is by far the most memorable game I’ve ever seen, which only says so much because I didn’t actually see the comeback playoff win against the Giants.
Thinking about that Green Bay game still gives me chills, though. Steve Young almost falls down and then makes one of the best throws I’ve ever seen and what he even says might be the best throw of his life. TO, who had spent the entire game dropping catchable balls, comes down with in between a triple covered mess. Then throw in all of the tension leading up to that game with the pain of every previous loss to Green Bay oozing like a fresh wound…
I mean… yeah.

I get chills too. That pass was unbelievable. By far the best ever. Everyone at my brother’s house was tackling eachother and going crazy. Great catch too considering he got hammered when he came down with it.

Wait, so a 21 point loss to a 1-5 team was the most memorable game of the last 30 years.
Although, if you’re speaking generally, I suppose you could be talking about any game between 2002 and 2007.

Yeah lets go with that, i forgot about the loss, my most memorable game besides the obvious ones, Giants,Packers etc… was going into Oakland in 2002, Jose Cruz misses the game winner in the 4th, but in OT he shut that raider nation down, and we took the Battle of the Bay. TO was a MONSTER that game, god i miss Garcia to Owens

Not Cruz who equally sucked on the Giants as the kicker did for the 9ers. God dang soccer players who want to play american football. T.O. got 192 yards in that game as I remember. From another planet

Sunday Night Game in Buffalo
Goal line stand at the 9ers 1, Thurman Thomas was stuffed by BY and Co., forcing a fumble which in-turn is returned for a TD by Lee Woodall for the win.. I remember being at a family friend’s house who never watched football and was confused why this kid was running around yelling and jumping around his house with an outburst of excitement.. it was insane!

Off the top of my head...
Post-season:
—2002 Wild card vs. the Giants
—1998 Wild card vs. GB
—1994 Championship Game vs. Dallas
—Super Bowl XXIII vs. Cincy
—1981 Championship Game vs. Dallas
Regular season:
—1998 Opening Day vs. Jets: Hearst OT run (see above)
—1994 Opening Monday Night vs. Raiders: Rice 3 TDs to break all-time record
—1990 Monday Night vs. Giants (10-1 vs. 10-1):
—1989 Monday Night at Rams: Niners over come 17 point deficit (and Ram 1st & 10 at SF 2) in 4th quarter, including 2 90+ yard TDs.
—1987 at Steelers: “Hail Jerry” — Wyche’s poor time management leaves Montana time for one play, a Hail Mary to Rice.

Young catches his own pass
I can’t seem to find the video. But I’ve always liked the play where he catches his own pass and runs it in.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

It was my first football game ever, and I got to see my 49ers! It was a bustery day in Charlotte, N.C., and the most memorable play of the game was the TD pass from Garcia to Rice. I am still excited that I got to see Rice catch a TD before he left the 49ers =D.

Sunday night in 98 i think....
against the Saints. Young threw a 20 yard pass up the middle to Hearts for like a 60 yard score. It was my first game and we sat on the 30. Blow out!

1994 Championship Game
When we jumped the Cowboys and went up 21-0 in the first quarter, Ken Norton had an INT for a touchdown, I think, and the game was over in the first five minutes.

1. late 80’s or early 90’s, monday night against the rams. john taylor has two 90+ yard tds. great game to watch.
and now that i’m a fantasy nerd, how great a day would that have been?
2. 1989 at philly, montana throws 4 fourth quarter tds to come back against the eagles and makes the cover of si.
3. 1989 nfc championship vs. the lambs. the rams had just beat the ny giants in ot with flipper anderson catching a td and running straight into the locker room. in the game at the ’stick, ronnie lott picks off jim everett in the first quarter and takes it back for a td and the rout is on.

I got another good one
How about last year’s game vs Arizona? The OT game? It had a little bit of everything – High scoring, a hail mary catch in the end zone as the half ran out, Willis running down a WR, missed field goals, and of course, a sack in the end zone causing a fumble and recovered for the game winning TD!! That was a good random game. And one of the few bright spots for the niners in the last few years.
Another one, i am thinking of is the game vs the Seahawks in 06. Alex Smith looked like Steve Young, Gore was running mad and catching passes out of the back field like Roger Craig. Late comeback to win. Good game.

1985 Super Bowl
I know this is an obvious one but it can’t be left out. I firmly believe that the 9ers were the only NFC team that year that could’ve given Marino a beat down in the big dance.

Hmmm
Unfortunately, it was a game that involved TO. The NFC playoffs game between the 49ers and Packers where TO caught the game winning TD from Steve Young. It was also memorable because it was a game when TO was still a humble kid. It was huge for Mooch, also, because he continued to coach the team for a few more seasons. Just try to reminisce and imagine TO crying all over the sidelines after the TD.

two games @ tampa...
…only because i was there. i’ve mentioned these before on here. in 1997, rice blows out his knee. in 2002, they get destroyed in the divisional game and give up before halftime…mooch fired soon thereafter. niners suck for 6 years and counting.
another game, though i know it doesn’t fit with this thread, is the super bowl against the dolphins. two reasons: (1) i’m from miami and was on my way to growing up a dolphins fan, and (2) it occured on my 6th birthday. that game was the genesis of my niner fandom.

I was at that Super Bowl.
I lived on the Stanford Campus and was actually able to walk to and from the game. I was 13 and worked all season at the stadium as a vendor, so I could work the game. Then, when it turned out the Niners were playing the ’Phins, my aunt and uncle (season ticket holders in Miami) gave me an extra ticket. Our seats were in the end zone, but the Niners ended up scoring 31 of their 38 points at that end (including 21 in the 2nd quarter), so they were the best seats in the house. Still one of the very best days of my life.

Super Bowl XXIII vs. Bengals and 98 Wild Card vs. Packers
are by far my personal favorite playoff moments.
The Drive that won that Super Bowl is the essence of the West Coast Offense: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtifiVYxnVg
Short passes to Craig, long ones to Rice, and one to Taylor to cap it off.
98 Wild Card – Brett Favre tried to finish the game with Sprint Right Option (“The Catch” play) and executed it with a TD to Antonio Freeman, I believe, with a couple of minutes left. Then during the ensuing drive, Rice fumbled on a play, but was ruled down by the officials. Thank goodness for that gaffe, or this wouldn’t of happened: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3C4P9O20Qk
My most memorable regular season game was in 1988 against the NY Giants at the Meadowlands. I had to run errands with my parents that day, so when they went shopping, I stayed in the car and listened to the game on the radio. Joe Starkey is the BEST football announcer I have ever heard. When Starkey called the TD pass to Rice, I literally envisioned the play in my head just like it happened. I was bouncing up and down the back seat as Rice was heading to the end zone. It was like deja vu when I went back home and saw the highlight on TV:
