Need A College Football Team to Root For...

Alright here's the deal. I am a die hard 49ers, Giants, Warriors, and AC Milan (Italian Soccer Team) fan. My dad is a 49ers fan but never really included me in his Sunday ritual. It was only when I flipped on my Madden 02 did I start becoming a football fan. Football parlayed into other sports (Except soccer, always have been a fan, Viva Italia!), and soon I was a Sports "Geek".

Now that I have transferred into a 4 year college, I want to be able to root for a College Football Team. I always told myself as soon as I get into a university I would have my team to root for, unfortunetly my college, UC Santa Cruz (Go Slugs!), does not have a football team for me to cheer for. So now I am putting my fan soul on the line and would like some of the 49er faithful to convince me to root for their team.

I have a few qualifications though:

- First - NO CAL! I was accepted by CAL only to be dropped 3 months before the start of school because of "over enrollment", which consequently ruined my back up school UC Davis. I have nothing against CAL fans (best friend is a die hard fan) just have bad memories.

- Second - I would very much preffer a PAC 10 or WAC team. Eventhough I haven't had a team to root for I have followed these two conferences every Saturday. Also those teams are usually the only ones I can watch every week on TV.

- Third - Please just don't vote for a team, give me reasons. Tell me why you love them.

Since I don't want to make a huge list for the poll, I will just put each team's state. After the first poll is done I'll take the state with the most votes and list each team within it.

I want to say, that once I chose a team, I am monagamous and unwaivering. I follow that team through thick and thin and will always be a fan.

So now let the bidding for my fan soul begin!

Is football prostitution legal in California?

Just kidding, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard or “selling” your collegiate allegiance to the most convincing argument. But then again where I’m from you were born into it.

here, here

I’m a Fresno State Bulldogs fan, but that’s because it’s where I’m from geographically – my college didn’t have a football team either.

Cal

I’ve always been spiteful of Cal, the school, since high school. They denied me then and again three years later when I applied as a transfer. I ended up in Davis, which isn’t bad by any means. I think it actually worked out for the better, as I like the small town feel of things there… feels almost like a giant dorm or something.

Anyway, I still root for Cal because they’re local and it’s the founding school of the UC system. I don’t necessarily have an attachment to any school per se, but going to any UC, you’re technically part of the University of California, which is aptly represented by Cal. You could always root for UCLA, too.

You could always root for UC Davis (Div I Big West, I think?), the school you missed!

by sfgfan on Oct 7, 2008 3:20 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I missed it because...

I missed it because by the time CAL sent the letter to me it was to late to enroll. I like Davis and all but I kind of can’t watch them on TV, and they are to far to watch live. Plus I think my JC, CSM, might be able to beat them.

No way

no way CSM can beat them. I know a couple of CSM players, and they in no way compare to UCD.

Probably...

But their team has won a few championships recently and have had very dominant record. Of course their not in the same division so UCD probably would win, but I think it would be relatively competitive.

Idaho

Go Boise State! The blue field should be reason enough, but they employ a fun offense that is quite entertaining.

The other thing about Boise State...

Their was this university in Japan (the two time national football champion) that was invited to go to any school and the coaches passed on USC, UCLA, CAL, etc…and went to Boise St. They said the coaching was the best there and they do the most with what little they have.

Boise St

You leaning towards Boise State? We need to come up with some other ways to keep this up if you’re interested. Boise is 15th and 16th in the AP and Coaches poll. A good time to choose.

I'm not so much leaning towards Boise St. as...

Like I said, I watched for the last three years all WAC and PAC-10 teams and I do find Boise St. entertaining. Especially since they always permanently seem to have the underdog role, and are actually capable of upsets. But like I said up top, It’s not just going to be votes, if you make a good case i’ll throw your team up in the final discussion/vote, and so far you have been doing so.

I think you’ll most likely end up rooting for whatever team you end up following the most, so I won’t make any real suggestions.

On that note, though, go Cal! I did that for me.

I'd say Stanford, but honestly, rooting for their football team is like voluntarily becoming a Cubs fan

I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Basketball, though— A-OK.

Davis!!

the school you missed out on, we won on a 40 yard hailmary pass with no time on the clock last weekend and are undefeated at home this year. Cool new stadium too, and maybe in another 10-20 years theyll be a legit division 1 school and you can say youve been a fan from the beginning! Plus we beat Stanford a couple years ago. Who doesnt like an underdog?

That sounds awesome...

But like I said since their not on TV and I’m down with the hippies, so I really wouldn’t have a team to root for. I may root for them just for the heck of it, but I want a team that I could yell at the TV when they do bad and run through the halls saying, Hell Yea Mother-F***er!, when they do good.

I'll throw in my team for whatever it's worth

I think it’s a simple choice, and I’ll tell you why you should be a Fresno State Bulldogs fan.

1. They are in the WAC (which was a conference you preferred), but they play up to PAC-10 quality standards. Because of their smaller stadium and less money, the PAC-10 hasn’t invited them. This gives a nice “no one believes in us” quality to the team every year, which IMO is a heck of a lot of fun and motivation to root for.

2. The fanbase is awesome. They consitently pack the house, even for crappy teams like Idaho State. When the big teams come to town, Bulldog Stadium can rival the likes of any NCAA stadium with the rowdiness. Also, the fans travel very, very well (just went to the UCLA game, and half the stadium was in red!), which leads me to my next point…

3. Pat Hill is one of the most underrated coaches out there in that they can get big schools to consistently play them, and the Bulldogs consistenly win against those teams—they are tied with Utah for most wins against BCS teams by a non-BCS team (14) since 2000. Hill gets them prepped for these games very well, and their hard-nosed style of football is incredibly fun to watch and root for. Oh, and they win these games without much recruiting—most players are from the Central Valley, they just play their hearts out.

Trust me, you’re in for a lot of fun, but you’re also in for a roller coaster ride with this team. While they consistently win against BCS and non-conference teams, they’ve struggled against lesser division rivals. The best way to describe the Bulldogs over the past decade would be that they play up or down to their opponent’s quality of play.

All that being said, I’d find a different school to root for basketball. They’ve been horrible since Tarkanian left, mostly because they’ve had to purge the program of felons and cheaters, and in the process have lost a lot of talent.

4.

Great Comment!

Seriously. I have watched their checkered field for years and have always felt that they have done a great job with what little they have. Fresno State, partly because of the poll but mainly because of your comment, will definitely be in the final discussion/poll.

next season

Davis @ Fresno St. I say you go to the game and choose the winner as your team. Davis would be a huge long shot to win that one, but if they do it would be worth not being able to see most of their games on TV

Speaking of going hand-in-hand

It amazes me here in the Central Valley how many Dodger/Cowboy fans there are. There certainly are quite a few Dodger/Raider fans, but I never got the Dodger/Cowboy draw. Maybe they’re all just fairweather fans, who knows?

Here ya go Gore,

Mad at Cal? Looking for a place with the same atmosphere, the same elite-ity of sports teams? Well have I got a school for you!!!

Seriously though, as a longtime Cal fan now at school in Eugene, being a Duck fan is a great decision. The majority of our sports teams are competitive, not just football (volleyball #7 nationally, cross country defending national champs, soccer and softball perennial tournament contenders, men’s hoops two years removed from the Elite 8). The Ducks run THE most exciting offense in college football under Chip Kelly, are a year in, year out Pac-10 contender, and always have one of the better recruiting classes nationally. With dual threat freshman QBs Chris Harper and Darron Thomas only getting closer and closer to being Dennis Dixon 2.0 and 2.1, and great young talent waiting in the wings behind great veteran talent, it’s a good time to be a Duck fan. Oh, and I guess if you like seeing guys hit other guys really, really hard, we do that too.

remember what I said earlier about the uniforms?

see that’s the thing, I actually kind of like Oregon’s program and their team, but I just couldn’t watch those atrocities week in and week out. Plus having ties to Cal and UW makes it pretty hard to like another pac 10 team

Like them or not (and I like certain combinations)

I’m more concerned with how the team plays: exciting football. And as much as our jerseys are cutting edge/outlandish, we’ve got one of the classic helmets in college football. No one likes the yellows, I’m talking about the green helmet, and a splash of the white.

Has many links to niners… head coach was once defensive coordinator. Once MLB Ken Norton is now a lb coach. past niner greats: Ronnie Lott, Tim Mcdonald, Derrick Deese, and yes he was a niner once OJ Simpson

Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.
