49er offseason outlook
Right now, it's almost 1:30 in the morning. As an imsomniac, I normally watch a lot of late night T.V, but since I've been watching the same sports center show for almost 3 hours, I've decided to put better use of my time.
Looking ahead, there needs to be some real changes for the niners to be successful. The first offseason move, as is done with most teams in a rebuilding phase is to hire a head coach. Unlike most teams however, we have a great head coach right now. Singletary will establish a tough physical team, and will not only bring in guys that want to win, but is also the type of guy that players want to win for. Unless we can find guy like Bill Cowher or Marvin Lewis, there would be a better guy out there. On top of that, we need to dump Mike Martz. Look, he can claim how much he likes Frank Gore, but when he isn't even averaging 20 carries a game and isn't even on the field for the final play, you could tell he thinks he can turn us into the greatest show on turf. The reality is, we need an offensive coordinate would will pound the rock and focus on short passes and create a ball control offense. As for defense, I think we need to become a 4-3 again. Keys to a successful 3-4 include a great NT (hard to find) and 2 freak athletes at OLB(lawson is great but his size is a concern.) By moving back to a 4-3, it not only gives us more support up front, but allows lawson to move to a 4-3 OLB, where he would have more success. The next move rebuilding teams typically do is cut washed up or vets. The niners list will include walt harris, barry sims, jonas jennings, tony wragge, jt o'sullivan, aubrayo franklin, and tully banta-cain. Players such as Ray McDonald and Ronald Field need to be cut do to their terrible attitudes. Solid vets that need to be cut because we need to move on include Jeff Ulbrich, Takeo Spikes, and Issac Bruce. Though a lot of those 12 players have been positive additions to the team this year, it would be in our best interest to gain as much youth as possible.
The most pressing needs of the niners after those moves should be QB, RT, BLT, 2OG, 2 DT, and CB.
QB- I think our best option in a draft, where I feel the only franchise QB will be a top 2 pick, is to get Shaun Hill, Alex Smith(assuming he'll take a pay cut, if not CUT HIM) a 4th or 5th round pick, and possibly a young guy to trade for (John Beck, Brian Brohme, ect.) Like I mentioned earlier, we don't need a game winner, just a game manager.
RT- Staley has been solid at LT and is getting better, but RT is still a major issue. Barry Sims and Jonas Jennings have been horrible and Syder is a back-up at best. We need a real run blocker here. An option, Andre Smith from Alabama. Look, I know that RT is not the most important position, but successful franchise show that picking the best player typically works better than picking the need. And though Little Davis would be a better pick as CB is a large need, take Smith, as he is a #1 pick in some draft, and would help both the run and pass offense drastically.
BLT- We need a back up incase Staley gets hurt. A fith rounder should be ideal to fit that role.
OG- A major weakness in our team is the guards. We do have some solid youth in Davis Baas and Chilo Rachael, but adding some depth in FA or a late draft pick wouldn't be a bad idea.
DT- Although statistcally, we are not that bad against the run, we normally get man handled at the line. This is a postion where we could sign a big FA, such as Albert Haynesworth, or trade a pick to get a later first rounder where there are plenty or legit guys.
CB- Harris is done and it appears shawnte spencers may not pan out to who we thought he would be. We need to do something about our #2 CB. Nnamdi is a FA, but I don't think any CB not named Champ Baily should be making more than a LT, no offense to Lockdown 22. Looking at the draft, a second round pick should be a good time to add that number two guy Alfonso Smith, Darius Bulter, and Kevin Barnes are all possiblities.
Overlook on other positions. Though the pass rush is not that good, A real DT could solve that. And when Lawson is 100%, Rodick Green, Amhad Brookes, and Parys Haralson eastablish a little consistancy, and Justin Smith beasts it up like he is doing this year, we should be pretty go.
Though I will always remain hopeful that things will change, it is never to early to think about next year. Go NINERS and it is now 2:20 and I'm too tired to spell check so if it is bad, 1 comment is enough to get the point across. Thank you.

According to the comminsioner of the nfl, 104 people retired last year. 7 due to age, and the rest because of Patrick Willis

Hard to read but all forgiven due to the insomniac state...
I agree with mostly everything except for the cut Ray Mcdonald, Spikes and Wragge part… I think Ray adds energy to that line and can only get better and Spikes brings in leadership and attitude to the defense that needed create a personality. Wragge is a solid backup and i believe a nice addition to the starting line.. I think Rachal will take his place and Wragge can be a commodity as a backup.
Dump everyone including Foster, B. Johnson, Jay “Ouchy” Moore and Roman to that list. Hopefully Singletary can “spy with his little eye” good, physical, football players next year with his new Offensive coordinator from hard nose teams like Pittsburg, NY Giants, Carolina or Denver (not really hard nosed but have good offensive minds in Colorado). I do agree that Smith should be our #1 pick at RT (or Okrapo)… they are beasts!
Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

I couldnt read the post but I’m with you on McDonald, Spikes and Wragge and what their roles could be on a solid team. There are plenty or other guys we should cut before getting to those 3

Now I read it...
And it’s a good post with good ideas. Like the cuts and the youth movement. With the youth movement of the 49ers, all bay area teams will be on the youth wagon.

The Niners have ton of holes and a limited number of guys to sign and draft

Not too many holes
I don’t think the 49ers are too far away from being a 8-9-10 win team. To become a contending team we definitely need a better QB, but that is going to take a few years of development. I think if we can upgrade at receiver and O-line we can be a decent team next year.
I don’t think we should get rid of Martz. I know people always say he doesn’t use Gore enough but look at the numbers, Gore is getting a lot of carries. Gore is one of the best runners in the NFL and I like the way that Martz is using him.
On offense our biggest holes are right tackle and wide receiver. Wide receiver might not be a huge concern if Hill and Morgan can improve over the offseason. But we definitely have to improve right tackle. I wouldn’t mind using our first pick on a right tackle if there are no worthy QB’s.
As far as defense, we need to improve our safeties. There always seem to be good safeties in rounds 2-3 so I think we should use a pick there. It would also be nice if we could get a run stuffing DL, but those are much harder to come by.
Also I am not sure if Singletary will be a great coach, but we should at least keep him until next year and see what he can do.
