Buffalo Rumblings Q&A
EDITOR'S NOTE 9:35AM: Welcome to Brian. My FanPost is up over at Buffalo Rumblings as well.
Howdy, Niners Nation! Brian Galliford of Buffalo Rumblings here to answer any and all of your questions or comments in regards to the Buffalo Bills and this weekend's matchup between Buffalo and your Niners.
A short intro: we're not exactly sure how to feel about the Bills right now. They started the season 4-0, moved to 5-1, dropped four straight, then went into Kansas City and plopped 54 points on the Chiefs. It's been a weird season, to be sure. We're not sure if our team is borderline elite, borderline awful, or just really young. I'm leaning toward the latter.
Offensively, coordinator Turk Schonert has found a renewed commitment to the running game, and Marshawn Lynch, as a result, has had two huge weeks in a row. Trent Edwards had struggled during the team's four-game losing streak, but was dominant against the Chiefs, scoring four times (2 pass, 2 run). If you're looking for a weak area on our offense, point at the run blocking. It's been pretty bad.
Our defense, in my estimation, has slid along way from the borderline dominance it exhibited early in the season. Led by DT Marcus Stroud and LB Kawika Mitchell, the unit rarely makes big plays, but has shown a penchant for giving their fair share of them up of late. It's a unit this team can win with, but over the past five games, our opponents have dropped an average of 26 points on us.
Special teams-wise, we're one of the best. Rookie Leodis McKelvin is, in my estimation, the most explosive kick returner in the game not named Josh Cribbs. Recent "wide right" redux aside, there's not much this unit does wrong. We're coached by Dick Jauron, a calm, reserved guy that Bills fans either love (my hand is raised here) or hate.
Let's open this thing up for questions if you've got 'em. Looking forward to a good game this weekend.

How would you describe Marshawn Lynch's skillset?

Diverse. He’s no LT, clearly, and he’s not the explosive type of player that Frank Gore even is. Lynch lacks elite break-away speed, but he makes up for it with a running style highly similar to Dallas’ Marion Barber. He doesn’t quit. He’s an excellent receiver, works well in space, and is impossible to bring down with one guy. Great balance. All around he’s an outstanding back, and if Buffalo could ever get consistent run blocking, he’d be one of the Top 5 most productive backs in the league. As it stands, he’s caught 15 passes in the past two weeks; in essence, he’s the heartbeat of this offense.

Only on YouTube. Marshawn stays pretty quiet in Buffalo, especially after his off-season issues with the hit-and-run. He rarely talks to the media. I will admit, though, that it’s fun to watch him laugh and smile after delivering or receiving a big hit on game days. He’s a laid-back dude. Clearly our most popular player, and it’s well-deserved.

Have you heard any plans to experiment with Wild Lynch formation?

We’ve done it. He’s taken probably a half-dozen snaps over the past three weeks. Honestly, he’s not particularly effective at it – the Bills don’t use it as extensively as Miami, and it’s basically just a short-yardage formation we use to pick up 3-4 yards. It’s definitely a Buffalo Bills-style interpretation of what has been a pretty creative formation for other teams in the league.

Plus the few times we have run the wildcat formation, we usually use Fred Jackson instead of Lynch.

Not lately, Brewed – I haven’t seen Jackson take a snap there since the Jets game.

My mistake. I really thought this past weekend was the firs time Lynch was lined up in the shotgun, but I am probably confusing my wildcats.

But Lynch played QB in high school, so he knows how to pass. Wouldn’t that make him more effective in Wild Beast formation, given that he can run, hand-off, or throw?

Oh, we’re aware that he can throw – he tossed a TD pass against Cincinnati last season as a rookie. So to answer your question, yes, he’s got the skills to be effective in that formation. Buffalo just hasn’t come close to diversifying it to the point that Miami has, and truthfully, it’s a very minuscule part of our offensive attack.

Actually Marshawn Lynch did not play QB in highschool, He did play cornerback and was #1 rated DB on rivals.com, His cousin Josh Johnson of the Tampa Bay Bucs was the highschool QB of Lynch’s team!!

There was a small amount of talk among fans earlier in the season about how we would feel if the 49ers went after J. P. Losman sometime before next season (mind you, this was sometime after the ridiculous Daunte Culpepper discussions and before the current Donovan McNabb discussions, with undisclosed proximity to any of the Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson, John Kitna, John Beck, Byron Leftwich, et. al discussions… guess what fanbase is desperately unsatisfied with its quarterbacks?).
Anywho… we did talk about how we’d feel about Losman. It was a by and large negative discussion, but I don’t think many of us have any first-hand knowledge of the guy’s ability. I think most of us came to the consensus that we wouldn’t want to touch J. P. with the Rams’ ten foot pole, but I’m still curious to hear a first-hand account: What say you about Losman?

First, talent: you’ll be hard-pressed to find many quarterbacks more talented than this guy currently in the league. He’s mobile, an excellent athlete, has decent size for the position, and has one of the strongest arms in the game. Physically, he’s a specimen.
I’m not a fan of Losman for two reasons. One is that after several years in the league, he just still doesn’t get “it”. He’s slow to read coverages. He forces too many balls and makes too many mistakes. For every “how did he do that?!” throw, you get three “why did he do that?” throws.
Secondly, he’s been rather lackadaisical this season when it comes to preparation. He’s mad that the Bills didn’t trade him this past off-season, instead choosing to keep him as a talented backup who knew our coaches and the system. But when he’s seen the field (and to be fair, that was only for most of one game in Arizona), he was unprepared and largely terrible. He’s given up – even while trying to prove his worth to a free agent market that usually picks up talented young quarterbacks quickly. I got some flack for this from the folks at Arrowhead Pride, but I don’t think there’s going to be an awful lot of interest for Losman once he hits the free agent market in March.

thank you, oh voice of reason
There’s been a lot of talk about the potential of bringing JP to San Fran as a successor to whoever our QB is this week, perhaps not least because he’s a guy who hails from Venice, CA.
As a Buffalo-Area Niners fan, I’ve heard and seen enough to know what I need to know about JP—I echo your sentiments (though I might qualify the ration of ‘wow’-throws to ‘why’-throws to something more like 4-to-1). Still it’s nice to hear it (and for everyone else to hear it) from a credible authority.

Okay, a non-Marshawn Lynch question...
Was Trent Edwards overrated at the beginning of the year, underrated now, or a little bit of both? Why did he get off to a fast start and cool down?

I’m not sure how he could have been overrated, because he was considered the one question mark on an otherwise solid team up here in Buffalo prior to the season. He was highly efficient during the 5-1 start, but the hype machine took off prematurely on the kid. Yeah, he was very good, but he’d only thrown 5 touchdowns to that point. That’s not exactly elite production.
I think he’s rated fairly at this point. At least up here, he’s considered a solid quarterback with enormous potential, but he’s not there yet. For now, he’s just got to get down consistency and keep on learning. He gives us a chance to win week in and week out.
As for why he cooled down; it’s been a combination of turnovers, bad luck and radical changes in the defensive approach of our opponents.

Coaching
What about Dick Jauron do you/others like you like, and what about the coach do other Bills fans that disagree with you hate?
Blind devotion.

It mostly centers around that given Bills’ fans nature, personality-wise. The traits that I see as endearing about Jauron – he’s calm, heady, cool under pressure and conservative – don’t exactly appeal to Bills fans who prefer the Cowher-spittle, Singletary-pants-dropping coaching style, where it’s more emotional and in your face. I suspect Tony Dungy has dealt with the same split wherever he’s coached as well.
There are some things Jauron does, however, that are inexcusable, in my opinion. He’s a poor in-game manager, and frequently makes gaffes related to challenges, personnel and (my biggest pet peeve) timeouts. But he more than makes up for it with the aforementioned endearing traits I mentioned earlier. I’ll put it like this: Bills fans either hate Dick Jauron or wish he was that much better at the little things. But I like the guy, and am glad he’s on board for another three years.

He ran a 4.37 coming out of Wisconsin, and he’s such an efficient route runner that it actually enhances that speed. He’s the best pure deep threat in the league.
