How about this trade?
Let's just say that the 49ers indeed pick 6th overall in the 1st round. Sure enough, the top players will be gone and a few pretty decent ones will be left. Let's hypothetically say that the 49ers want a super size upgrade in the QB position and offer their 1st pick to the NE Patriots for either Tom Brady or Matt Cassell. Since DeShaun Foster is on board, trade Frank Gore for a number one this year. Next year, Jahvid Best might become available and the 49ers pick him up. For the number 1 they get for Gore, they can get a top flight DL, either at end or nose tackle. I would say that that would really work. What do you think?

Foster?
So Foster would be our running back next year? Or do you also bring up Clayton and hope he can do something? I’d rather stick with Hill at QB and draft a QB in the early to middle rounds in 2009 and develop him. Then can use the current first rounder on a nose tackle and keep Gore. Gore’s struggled at times this year, but he’s still near the top of the league in yards per touch. Why give up a really good running back for potential that may or may not exist. And then there’s the fact that Gore is signed to a cap friendly contract.

Hmmm...
I was really thinking that the team could convince Roger Craig to unretire.

Totally agree
I think drafting a NT with 1st round, O-line guy in the 2nd and pick up a QB in the 3rd would be the way to go. That way we could keep Gore as you say, have a QB who could learn for the next 3yrs and in the meantime improve our Off and Def-lines to create a pass rush, and improve our protection of the QB. If we don’t think Hill is the man for next year, then how about keeping him as the no 2 and signing a QB this offseason in free agency – I like the look of Carson Palmer! What do you guys think?

So you’re saying that the Patriots place the franchise tag on Cassel and then trade him to the Niners? And that all it takes to get Brady is a first round pick?

Okay....
So let’s trade all of the O-line for Brady, if it makes you happy. And throw in the next ten years 1st rd pick. Are you happy?

Don’t get me wrong. A first round pick for Tom Brady would be an awesome trade. It would also never ever ever happen. That’s all I’m saying.

Not to mention..
… the Pats don’t generally like high first rounders, if I’m not mistaken. Inefficient use of the salary cap or something like that.

My only question is
why trade Gore? everyone has bad games

Foster has shown nothing this year
you don’t trade Gore, he’s untouchable. Our best player – except maybe Willis.

On Foster...
I understand the negative feelings towards Foster, but how many touches does he have this year? Also, looking back at some former 49ers RB, i.e., Garrison Hearst, Charlie Garner, who were considered to be over the hill, they did make the Pro Bowl when they were given the opportunity by the team. All I’m saying is, trade Gore now while he still has some value. Maybe Gore and a number 1 for Tom Brady. I mean, would you take Shaun Hill over Brady?

You're logic is completely flawed
I mean, would you take Shaun Hill over Brady?
It’s not really Hill or Brady. What you’re really asking is, would someone take Hill, Gore and a 1st rounder over Brady. I’d take Hill, Gore and a 1st rounder over Brady. Plus the cap implications (which everybody seems to ignore in the trade posts) would be ridiculous.

cap implications
You’re exactly right and that’s why there are so few trades outside of pick for pick.

Denied..
Even if we did pick up Cassel we need to protect him and allow best Best to be an effective back… I say pick up Okrapo as 6th pick, draft Qb in 2nd and NT in 3rd round. Pick up OL in free agent: Jordan Gross or Mark Tauscher. Keep Gore, let Foster go and let Clayton play. Also find a a replacement for Martz… I mean why are you calling pass plays when you’re in the lead and Gore is running strong.
Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

I'm not sold on Best as an NFL back
The guy I want? Quizz Rodgers. Yeah, he’s 2 years away. But the guy is untackleable. He’s reminiscent of Barry Sanders— tall defenders can’t even get a grip on him because he’s so quick and low to the ground, and he’s strong as an ox for his weight so you can’t bring him down with arm tackles.

Jacquizz Rodgers?
Best case scenario Darren Sproles. He most likely tops out as a Garrett Wolfe (who ran behind Cedric Benson and the other Adrian Peterson).

This
I really like Rodgers, and think he can be a valuable X-factor — a returner/3rd down back/gadget play-type of player (like Sproles, or maybe Leon Washington) — but I don’t think there’s any way he’s an every down back in the NFL.
Check out The Examined Life. Or don't. Whatever.

Confused
So who do we trade Matt Cain for?
Oh, wrong sport. Well, if we’re not trading Cain for Cassel, then just plain no.

Redic
Who even knows if Brady can work in a diff offense. Im pretty sure he’ll throw just as many picks as anyone else in Martz offense. Hill is doing fine. Cut the guy some slack, i mean this is the second year in a row that he has sorta lifted our team out of the mud and now people are trying to devise ways to get someone “better” i mean the guy is keeping us in games. Losing Gore would hurt us. Gore is a great back but he needs help carrying the load. We need a back that can give us a change of pace. Someone that has the speed to compliment Gores power and elusiveness.
I dont even think we need to draft a qb in the draft. We have more immediate needs than qb. Hill has shown that he can manage the game. If Alex resigns with us i still think he has the potential to eventually be the starter. Maybe not next season but eventually. It really all depends on if we can keep our staff intact. Our OL needs help. This upcoming class is deep with OL talent. Im pretty sure Oher and Smith will be gone, but Monroe may still be there. In the second if Terrence Cody aka “Mt. Cody” is still available that would be a steal. The dude would add some much needed size to our 3-4.

What?!?
That has to be the worst Idea I have ever heard. Frank Gore gives our team an id, Shaun Hill is playing out of his mind; your trade accomplishes nothing but a downgrade across the offense you need to stop drinking cough syrup.
With a top ten pick we’ll be able to pick up a top ol; eugene monroe, andre smith, or michael oher. With the second pick early in the 2nd we might see selvie but more likely a better linebacker. The third round looks like we may get a good db maybe chung then take asher allan in the 4th.
