Leftwich?
Byron Leftwich looked pretty good stepping in for Roethlisberger last night. This morning on Mike & Mike, John Clayton mentioned that Leftwich will probably be a highly sought after QB by many teams. One of the teams he specifically mentioned was San Fransisco. So this poses an interesting question. I 've presented the posibilities that I can think of, but I'm an idiot so I've probably missed another big option. Add additional options for consideration in the comments.

Leftwich is a pretty reasonable idea. He’s young. He’ll be a little more expensive than he should be, but still relatively cheap. He has been successful in the league, and is clearly talented. He poses pretty much the same risk/reward you get with any reclamation project.
I’m sure we all want a cheaper option, but realistically speaking, Leftwich’s name worth discussing. And by far more worthwhile an option than the “SIGN CULPEPPER NOW” crazy talk we saw intermittently last offseason.

Where is the none of the above option...
Or at least draft a QB in later rounds….I think they will have Smith as a day one starter, draft a Qb in 2nd or 3rd round. They might hire a different OC, and send JTO, and Martz packing.
Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

No, No!
Injuries – Immobile – Injuries – Immobile.
He’s got 6 years in the league and his history is as a disappointment. He’s not an untapped/waiting for his turn talent. He had his chances and is best used as a back-up. It would be a bad, bad decision to invest big bucks on a guy with mediocre stats and a big injury history.
What makes you think he would magically change with the 9ers?

Leftwich is not the answer.
I think he has proven he can win but under the current offensive scheme, Leftwich’s delivery is way too long, he is too immobile and his decision making is questionable. I hate spending another high draft selection on a QB but I don’t see any other option.
Hot dogs, get your hot dogs.

Immobile QB with Long Delivery + Patchwork Offensive Line = ???
Disaster.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

I'm not necessarily for or against the idea of Leftwich right now
But as for this argument you’re making, we’ll definitely know how Byron fares behind a bad O-line long before the Niners would ever take a look at him. Pittsburgh’s O-line has allowed something like 5 sacks per game over the last 3 weeks.
Never forget: I am a complete idiot

leftwich did make quick decisions though
that o-line sucks but roethlisberger has been holding on to the ball waaaay too long. byran made good and quick decisions last night.

I can't believe that many people...
… think that there is anything remotely resembling a sure-fire franchise QB in the first round of the draft (let alone in the top 5 to 10).

I dont think there is either, maybe Bradford but i wouldnt draft him in the first round if he came out

One decent half game from Leftwich and suddenly he’s the next big thing. Come on guys.

Actually, just about everybody here said “hell no, he’s terrible.” Hardly the next big thing.

well, not everyone. And if you watched ESPN at all yesterday you can see why the few who like the idea of grabbing him got the idea that he’s the next big thing

I didn’t say everyone, though. I said just about everyone here. Through this entire thread, only the person who wrote the fanpost (and me, to some small extent) even came out in favor of the idea. Nobody in this thread once said he was the next big thing. We’re clearly not ESPN.

either way
if youre going to draft a QB next year it might be wise to go after leftwich as a starter/backup. he did make quick decisions on monday night. problem is fat albert can’t run. atleast he doesn’t turn the ball over. he didnt have issues with that in jacksonville either. it was injury and being imobile. there are worse choices at QB out there.

I agree. I’ve actually been surprised by the strength of the clamor opposing Leftwich. As a reclamation project, the only really bad thing he has going against him is that he’ll probably cost more than he deserves. He’s not the next coming, but the risk/reward is definitely there.

I think part of the fear...
… is that McCloughan will bring in Leftwich and then stop looking for the next QB because he’s relatively young and “has had success.” While it’s unlikely (as they haven’t shown an inclination to do exactly that), it’s still a fear amongst many.
I have nothing against bringing him in as a backup that plays if a starter gets hurt. I do have a problem with bringing him in and anointing him the starting QB because of his price tag and/or his recent past performance.

secret answer F)
Sign this guy. He’s a very solid QB, has never been given a real chance to be a starter, and has played very well in the one year he started the majority of the season.
And yes, this has a lot to do with him being a FSU grad, but he has shown confidence in the pocket and the ability to throw the deep ball.

Iraq and a hard place
Drafting for a QB into our unstable coaching environment will reset the clock on our rebuilding losing-with-excuses period, with absolutely no guarantees that after all that we won’t end up ruining another young QB with potential in this league (otherwise known as the Alex Smith Effect).
Or we can go Byron Leftwich and know we’re in for a rough few seasons praying the economy gets bad enough that the Yorks end up losing the team to somebody who doesn’t hate everyone who has ever owned 49ers merchandise.
Or we can stick with Shaun Hill…
Or join me in rooting for the Titans.

good call
titans are my AFC team this year too. i feel they are what the 9ers should be. a team built on defense that will “hit you in the mouth”.

I tend to agree...
But Matt Ryan in Atlanta has shocked the *$#% out of me. I never saw anything that impressed me about him at Boston College… and now he doesn’t look terribad in the NFL playing for a team that could barely find their way out of the locker room last year.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

I don't think...
Atlanta was as bad overall as much as they were getting Vick’d and Petrino’d. Chaos and horrible situations can do that – see Oakland getting KY’d by the senile lunatic.
You can thank signing Turner and seeing R White emerge as a major WR helping, too. Hmmmmm, committing to the run, giving the QB an extra second or two, not throwing stupid picks. I guess that fomrula could work.
