DeAngelo Hall Please
EDITOR'S NOTE 7:30PM: I just noticed this FanPost and am certainly intrigued. If Hall were released I'm curious where he signs and for what. Like whether he gets a deal through the end of the season or tries to get a long term deal. I wouldn't want to invest much in him, but as a one year deal I'd be intrigued. Of course, the other problem is working him into the defense over halfway through the season. If the team thinks they can win the division I see reasons for it, if they're starting to look forward I don't. Thoughts? Aside from the fact that Al Davis is clearly going crazy.
______________________________________
I am pretty sure he is overrated but he stands to be an upgrade over Walt. Why the Raiders are releasing him I don’t really know. Has he had a bad year? Are they really that hard up for cash? Is Davis f-ing crazy. Well, yeah he is crazy.
What do you guys think? He is expensive but he adds talent to a not so great secondary. Pick him up? Yes or yes? I say yes.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Absolutely
Hall is very talented, and with the right motivation he could be back in Pro Bowl form. That motivation could come in the form of a certain bare-all coach, methinks.

Motivation could come from not being a Raider

VD got kicked off the field…….but you think DeAngelo “coach killer” Hall would be a good fit?

Hall
I havent been a big fan of his attitude since his VA Tech days, but the thought of him and Nate covering the field seems too good to say no to.

plenty of CBs on the roster already. The last thing the team needs is an overpaid underperformer at a position of strength

Strength in numbers?
What is this, a war? Just because there are a lot of names on the roster, it does not mean that it is a position of strength.
Hall may be an “underperformer” in terms of his contract, but the guy is better than most of the corners already on this roster. Would you like a list? Hudson, Rossum, Spencer, Strickland, Smith and probably Harris.

agreed
i can’t stand halls atitude but if they can sign him cheaper than say that stupid $70 million davis gave him, then i say do it! we need the help in the secondary. do it!

the thought of Nmadi and Hall covering the field seemed too good for Al Davis to say no to. Nate and Nmadi are probably pretty much equal. Lets not fall into the same trap.

i read that hall was having trouble with being a cover corner after being in a cover-2 system in the past. the ‘niners don’t run a cover 2 so i say no. unless we want him as a return man only to take over for rossum.

Cover-2
It is true that the 49ers don’t play a true cover-2, but from what I understand, they DO have some usage of cover-2 in their scheme. If I’m not mistaken, Walt Harris is almost ALWAYS in a zone, while Clements generally plays man. If Hall were to join the roster, he’d most likely be taking Harris’s spot, which means making him play a shallow zone wouldn’t be that far off from a cover-2 at all.

DeAngelo Hall is fast. That is all I have to say that is positive about him.

Really?
I don’t know what kind of truths there are to the rumor, as Hall just signed his huge deal, no? I know Davis is a joke of an owner, but no owner is willing to admit that he made a $24M+ mistake only one year into the contract.
The Raiders would get some sort of benefit from trading him, even if they have to send cash along with it, rather than just flat out releasing him.
In any case, if he is put on waivers, I don’t know if the 49ers should claim him. I’m not exactly sure how waivers works with someone who has a 7-year deal. I know that the team that claims him will pay a pro-rated portion of his salary for the remainder of this season, but what happens beyond that? I know the Raiders are on the hook for the bonus money ($24M+), so that leaves around $45M spread over the 7 years (that’s an average of $6M+). Would he really be worth $36M+ over the final 6 years of that deal? I really don’t know if he is.
The other option is a little bit cleaner (but maybe much more unlikely). If he clears waivers and ends up in free agency, maybe his price tag will be a little lower. I don’t really know if that would be the case, though.
I know the 49ers need a corner to step up and play opposite Clements, however, I don’t know if you have to pay $6M+ year to find that corner. It’s possible they find one in the draft or promote someone like Reggie Smith or Spencer to the top and just find a better pass rush. In either of those cases, it’ll take time, but the team definitely saves a lot of money that can be used to improve other positions (that are of equal or greater need) on this team.

I’d prefer letting Smith and Brown play.

Hmmm...
Even if DeAngelo Hall is better than Walt Harris, it’s all about personal attitude. Would you like to have a player with tons of talent but might be disruptive to the team?

"Has he had a bad year?"
Do you watch football? He’s been horrible.
There is absolutely no way he’s worth his current contract. If you’re suggesting that the Niners claim him off of waivers you’re committable.

Check out these stats from FoxSports.com
“In his eight games in Oakland, Hall was beaten 40 times for 552 yards on 66 passes thrown his way, according to data compiled by STATS LLC. He gave up more yards than any defender this season and was tied for third worst in catches allowed.”
He’s just misunderstood, having a bad year, dinged up, still learning how to play CB, uh, I mean, adjust to man-to-man coverage, blah, blah, blah.

It's Official
DeAngelo Hall is now a free agent!
Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

He's Gotta End Up Somewhere
He was one of my better performing DBs!
If my fantasy roster isn’t the number 1 issue here (though it should be), I don’t think his speed is what we’re lacking on our D, it’s our scheme, the lack of bodies where the plays are and the fact that I really haven’t seen our guys play cohesively all season.

Cover 2 vs. Man coverage
I’m sure many of you here can help me out with this… I think it was during Hall’s rookie year that he made his mark on the NFL by shutting down Terrell Owens. Well if I understand it correctly, in a cover 2 defense, each player is responsible for his specified zone on the field. So if Hall was playing in a zone, how did he really shut down TO?
Also, am I right in assuming that saying someone plays better in a Cover 2 is just a fancy way of saying zone defense? My understanding of defense has mostly been picked up from Madden football.

My understanding...
To your first question, I’d say yes, to an extent. It is my understanding that the corners generally play a slightly bigger zone than most of the other plays on defense in cover two (not counting the deep safeties, of course), so it’s possible that Owens stayed in his zone quite a bit. I could be wrong, of course. I tend to be good at that.
As for your second question, I’d say yes, too. I don’t think it means exactly that, though, as there are times that a corner in a non-cover-2 system will play zones. I think it more or less means the player just sucks at manning up with a receiver.
by sfgfan on Nov 5, 2008 4:07 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
cover 2 in 'english' means 2 deep (usually safeties)
it’s primarily a zone, but with man coverage responsibilities for the underneath (or non deep) defenders. based on the type of pattern that is being run, LBs and CBs must sometimes continue their coverage past their ‘zones’. this is known as “pattern read”.
basically, it’s a defense that gives corners a security blanket to help you deep.
