Got Questions for the Arizona Cardinals?
FOOCH'S NOTE 9:45AM: My corresponding FanPost is up at Revenge of the Birds. If you guys feel like joining in an answering their questions, head on over. As always keep it respectful.
Hey Niners Nation,
Cgolden from Revenge of the Birds here. In an effort to maximize community interaction between ROTB and you guys at Niners Nation this week, Fooch and I have decided to cross-promote by throwing up a FanPost so that you, devout fans of the Niners, can get any and all questions answered about the Arizona Cardinals (and vice versa over at ROTB).
So I'm here to answer your questions - and I expect a few ROTB-ers will migrate over to discuss the upcoming Niners/Cardinals game as well. Want to know what to expect from the high flying Cardinal offense? Curious about the Cardinals' injury situation? I may not be the dali-lama but I'll do my best to shoot it to you straight. Anything you got, fire away - I'm here to share and learn.
I'm looking forward to an entertaining Cardinals/Niners game this weekend. Should be fun.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Leinart
When do you guys expect Matt Leinart (if at all) to be a productive NFL QB?
Matty
I still believe that Matt will be, if he’s not already, a decent, productive NFL QB. He had a great offseason and training camp and he’d have been the starter of this team if not for a bad first half against the Raiders in the preseason. If he was still on the bench behind a guy who was struggling, I’d be worried but he’s relegated to backup duty behind an MVP candidate. He’ll still get his day in the desert, as long as he’s patient.
I actually really liked Matt from USC. I hoped that he would’ve came out the year before so we could draft him instead of Smith, but I guess now I’ll have to dislike him on your team…
What kind of changes has Warner been making to give himself the kind of production he’s had this year?

Footwork, two hands on the ball
He also get’s to call his own plays at the line of scrimmage depending on the defense he sees. And Kurt can tear apart a defense.

Let me consult the Magic Eight-ball
First off, who could have seen the MVP-like explosion that Kurt Warner has produced thus far? It will create an interesting offseason in terms of contracts, but it is a “positive” interesting. Unlike Alex Smith. Let me toss this hindsight is 20-20 question, would you rather the Niners worked Rattay another year and waited for Leinart? Vince Young?
Considering Warner’s performance the Cards have to figure he still has something left in the tank for next year. That leave’s Matt in a back-up position for a third year. This can only help him. He get’s to go the “old-school” route and learn under a vet, much like Rodgers in GB. Remember, Montana was behind Steve DeBerg to start his career for a year and half (2-14 and 6-10 seasons, not stellar but then there was ’81…).
So we’re likely looking at ‘10 to ultimately answer your question. Matt has the talent. Matt has shown flashes. His biggest issue has been confidence and trust in the team around him. He was handed a powerful team in USC and kept the flow going there. He came to a Dennis Green coached Cards. No wonder he’s had a rough time. Seeing Warner’s confidence, seeing the WR-corp’s confidence, seeing the defenses confidence grow, it will only help Leinart to have confidence and be successful. I think he will be the Cards’ starting QB for years to come.

Cardinals' successes
The Cardinals have been picked as “sleepers” quite often over the past handful of years or so, but always seem to fail to live up to those “expectations.” What is different this year? Are the players just better? Are things just clicking for the team? Or is it some combination of both?
What's the difference?
One word: Whiz. You won’t find a bigger Ken Whisenhunt fan than myself and I think he’s the reason that this team is finally playing NFL-caliber football. Is he the only reason? Of course not. The players are better and they are on a roll right now (especially at home and especially on offense), but he’s the biggest difference in my opinion. There’s no moral victories or excuses anymore. There’s only one acceptable outcome each and every game, victory. His mentality is infecting this team and I hope he’s the head coach of this thing for quite some time.
Another Word: Confidence
The team expects to win every game now. It’s no longer “gawd, I hope we’re lucky and get five turnovers and return three for TDs”. Whisenhunt has instilled that confidence and it continues to grow.
Now if I only had is confidence with some of his “trick” plays as of late…

You the fans have got to be loving you some Boldin, right?
After whining in the offseason, he actually mans up, produces, gets his head nearly knocked off, comes back in a couple weeks with a handful of metal plates in his face, and is somehow playing even better. Is it pretty much certain he’ll get a new contract?
STEVE HOLM! refuses to be the odd man out.
There’s no way that the Cards could realistically sign him to a long term deal after they gave Fitz that huge contract, right?
I mean I don’t know much about the Cards, but simple NFL economics will tell you that you can’t throw boatloads of money (which they both deserve) at 2 guys at the same position…

Colts have done so with Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison
Of course they had to say goodbye to Edgerrin James. But with Joseph Addai, no one really noticed.
Boldin should get a new contract this upcoming season. Can he draw $10/year? It will take some real creative contract structuring and the Cards would have to sacrifice another player they’d like to keep, such as Karlos Dansby. ::shrugs::
It’s hard to know what will happen. The penny-pinching Cards will make him ride out his contract. The Cards have been anything but since Michael Bidwell became the executive director of the team. Clearly, he likes spending daddy’s money. As long has he gets the return on the investment, Billy Bowtie Bidwell cannot complain (read: new stadium, Super Bowls, BCS Championship Games, etc).

that's the 10 million dollar question in ARI
As Hawk said, it’s doable if they really want to shell out the dough and pay two receivers 18-20 million per season.
I’m less optimistic than the average Cardinals fan though. While I love Boldin and if he’s not my absolute favorite player, he’s in the top 3. But I’m not so sure that they try and pay him what he wants. He’s a top 10 or so WR and he knows it and wants to be compensated fairly. I can’t fault him for that but I’m not sure that Whiz wants a team like the Colts, for example. It’s against his nature to have an ultra-prolific QB and a struggling running game. I get the sense that he’d much rather win with and would feel more comfortable with a team that pounded the ground game, got solid yet unspectacular QB play and played very good defense. I could be completely wrong of course, but that’s just my gut. I’d hate to see Q in any uniform other than Cardinal red but if I had to put money on what the off season holds, I’d say he’s traded. :-(
Breaston puts less need on keeping Boldin
Steve Breaston has shown he can produce as a #2 when Boldin was down better than his predecessor that wears #82 for the 49ers. So if Boldin were to go somewhere else, the WR corps are still strong. A good draft will recruit another #3 or #4.
Boldin tends to get hurt every season. His playing style induces that. This fact also makes dropping a lot of guaranteed money on him a risky proposition. Cards management hasn’t been known to be risk takers. So CG’s trade prediction is very viable.
Gore for Boldin…any takers? ::wink::

riiiight
not so much. aren’t you guys pretty excited about hightower, or do you not see him as the team’s future at RB?

What about Early Doucet?
Has he even sniffed the field this year?
by JerseyNinerFan on Nov 6, 2008 11:02 AM PST up reply actions
Doucet has sniffed pleather more than the field this season
As is the imitation leather of the trainer’s table.
He’s shown some ability and played in a couple of games and “should” be the #4 but that’s not happening this season considering Urban’s play.
A favourite saying of Cardinals fans, “next year”, truly applies to #80.
We all leave footprints in the sands of time, just watch out for the discarded fish hooks!
Yea
Ive seen Urban on the field much more than Doucet. He was one player that I really wanted the Niners to look at in the draft…
by JerseyNinerFan on Nov 6, 2008 11:08 AM PST up reply actions
Urban
When everyone is healthy, Urban’s been getting the nod over Doucet b/c he contributes on special teams. They’re about the same as far as their receiver skills right now, even though Doucet should be better in the future. Doucet’s looked fine when he’s been on the field, there are just too many quality WRs ahead of him right now.
Bad hammy has hindered his practice time
Hard to develop solely in the meeting room. Doucet ‘could’ pass Breaston down the road, most likely catching passes from a lefty though.
We all leave footprints in the sands of time, just watch out for the discarded fish hooks!
Breaston hasn't missed a step
He’s faster than Doucet, has demonstrated that he has solid hands, and strives for yards after the catch. He could start at #2 slot almost anywhere in the league. I don’t see Doucet taking any jobs.
Timmy
He’s the future in a two-back system, if that makes any sense. He’s quite possibly the most popular man in Arizona right now and I think he’ll be productive for quite some time. I also think he’ll be most effective with a nice change of pace, speed back. Hopefully JJ Arrington continues to look like a football player. If they decide not to keep him though, I could see them drafting a speed back relatively early in the draft. I hate to keep comparing him to Marion Barber but I think they’ll handle TH like DAL handles MB3.
Speaking of J.J. Arrington, could you talk a little bit about how you guys feel about him? I went to Cal when he played there and I’m sad to say that I haven’t followed his career as closely as I’ve wanted to since he came into the NFL.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

JJ
Up until the start of preseason this year, most of us had completely written him off as an NFL player. He’d spent three seasons running with zero toughness and often went down before the first hit. We started to hear in training camp that he was running with authority though and he was impressive every time he touched the ball in the preseason. He was inactive for the first four games of the season but once he got into the games he’s been pushing for more playing time each time he touches the ball.
It’s a huge compliment to JJ that he got carries over Edge last week which should say everything about how well he’s playing right now. I never thought I’d say this six months ago but if he plays like this for the rest of the year, I hope they resign him. We’d have a very good combo at RB.
o-line helps too
The improvement to the offensive line has also helped JJ to use his vision and speed to hit edges. There were more pulling lineman in the Rams game than I’ve seen in a looooong time and that had to help with JJ’s to long runs. I too hope he’s willing to resign in Arizona as that will take some pressure off of finding a high end RB in next year’s draft. Besides, he’s a better kick-off returner than Breaston.

Timmy Hightower
I see TH as one of the RBs of the future for the Cards. The NFL trend is to have a stable of reliable RBs and judging by Whisenhunt’s references to his Pittsburgh days, I think that’s where the team will go. Arrington is the stand-in “other” back for this year and Edge, well, who knows what role remains for Edge. Clearly, the Cards will need another reliable back to fill the stable for next season and I’m guessing the Cards will go the draft route.

One more..
What took so long to get DRC into the starting secondary? Whats his production level been like when he’s actually on the field this year?
DRC getting eased in
He’s been in on ST and playing some nickle to get his “feet wet”. One thing we have learned is he doesn’t shy away from contact! He reminds me of a 49ers DB named Hank in that regards, about as skinny too. DRC is susceptible to all the usual rookie problems of biting too much on jukes and fakes, he gets his body out of position, but he does show raw physical ability that is enticing. He should get the nod Monday so we can all come to a conclusion afterwards.

Hit and miss
Hawk beat me to it and naturally we had about the same thoughts……
They decided to take it slow with DRC given that he was coming from such a small school and inferior competition. I think most of us thought during camp that mid-season was the earliest we’d see him in a starting role. When he has been on the field he’s shown some good things (mostly that’s he much more physical than we expected) and some bad things (burned by Lee Evans) but overall he’s looked…..like a rookie. We’ll see how he plays the second half of the season, rumors are already surfacing that he might start on Monday night.
Yea thats why I was asking.. I heard that he’s probably starting in place of Green on Monday. That would put him up against fellow rookie Josh Morgan (if he wasn’t demoted already)
Rod Hood is the stronger CB
So DRC’s side should be the targeted side. Hill just better know where Antrel Rolle is while he’s dodging Adrian Wilson on a safety blitz.

So dumping to Gore is going to be vital
Time for Gore to do his high knee jaunt Roger Craig impersonation.
::sniff, sniff:: Roger…fumble against the Giants…no three-peat… ::sigh:: Some scars never heal.

Pretty much the most upsetting game I ever watched in my life…

Seriously, when was the last time a fan of an opponent of the Cards asked to not get killed? '75? '84?
No worries, zenbitz. The hurt potential favours the Niners.

Edgerrin(sorry if i mispelled) James or Tim Hightower
All i have to ask is if James or Hightower will be the starting RB the rest of the year? I respect James a lot for what he has done, but Hightower has kept me alive in fantasy games :), but other than that i hope James can get something going soon, loved him in Indy. Well hopefully, we can pull out a win against you guys on Monday Night Baby! Ta ta ta taaa…
Edge is done
At least with being the regular starter in Arizona. Only three people didn’t see the field last week against the Rams: Leinart, Pat Ross (back-up center), and James. Expect Timmy “the Ballista” to get the starts for the remainder of the season with JJ Arrington as the primary back-up. Edge will get some touches, I’m sure, as rooks tend to wear down quickly due to the arduous work schedule of the pros vs. college.
Edgerrin is a classy guy and though I hate to see him sit, his lack of burst is really the crux of the matter. At least for one game, the o-line does a better job of pulling and blocking in space and letting Hightower to weave through the masses of humanity. Two 30-yard runs in one game…pinch me, I must be hallucinating.
Expect to see James on the FA market in March. Pop over to Revenge of the Birds if you want to read more on Edge’s situation and how our peers see things going.
