Editor's Note: Barrows wrote in his game day live blog that Rossum won't return punts. Not sure why he's inactive then. We'll see what the updates bring.
Well, the folks at The Phinsider have been talking all sorts of smack. Apparently there's no way the 49ers can win this game. It's gonna be a tough one to win that's for sure. When the 49ers went into Buffalo to win, the Bills struggled for much of the game, which was a big key. I doubt the Dolphins start off as slow. Of course, if Frank Gore is out, that certainly makes things a little more difficult. Either way, I'll be rockin my Patrick Willis jersey, so here's hoping for good things.

Lets go, Niners..
I’ve missed tons of sleep due to work and the Nuggets I should under no circumstances be awake right now. So… we better win, because I’m staying up.
10am
At least it’s an early game.
And as to your Nuggets, I know why you really want this game: Those rat-bastahds at The Phinsider!

That's exactly why.
I tried to have class, really I did. I even liked the Dolphins at one point. They’re now on my list. You know the one, the short one with the Cowboys.
And yeah, I’m glad its early. I’ve had the misfortune of getting a job from 8:30-11:30 and the Nuggets are at 3:00. But I’m managing just fine on non-football days. Sunday is gonna be wicked slow for me.
And you know
I’ll be happy for ‘em if they win. They need it, I want to see just how “humble” they’ll be. I hate terrible fans and I gotta say no matter how good they do I’m going to be so stoked when they totally blow it in the post-season (if they make it that far) and when they go 1-15 again next season.
At any rate none of that matters cause you know, we’re going to win.
Totally agree...
…keep your integrity and there’s only one winner. I read all their comments yesterday and was dismayed – put my opinion in a comment in the prediction game post.

Man they've got me to the point where I'm recording the whole game to my hard drive
So I can make a nice little highlight video to spam at them when we completely destroy them.
That or I could look like a fool come game over. At any rate, I’d love to have Vernon Davis trucking Joey Porter or something on a Godly screen to post over there.
Be sure to "spam" that video over at us whenever you get the chance;
especially the Niner’s final offensive snap. lol
I’m just messing. Great game. I was really impressed with how good your Niners are playing. And I hope Singletary stays as HC.
Good luck in your final 2 games, guys!
Completely agree...
… I was actually enjoying Miami’s turnaround this year, but after seeing what a bunch of dickheads they have on their fan site, now I’m going to enjoy them missing the playoffs or getting hammered in the first round.

yeah
im rather surprised the Dolphins fans were the ones acting like jerks. I expected that from the Cowgirls blog. Dolphins fans are at the top of my list for moronic fans now. seriously they were 1-15 last year.

Davis-Porter
And so it begins (from Barrows blog):
12:14 p.m. Wow! Already a lot of jaw-jacking (as Mike Singletary phrases it) between Joey Porter and Vernon Davis. The exchange was initiated by Porter as the teams were coming out of the locker room. He approached Davis and started jawing at him. A few seconds later, Davis returned the favor. No fisticuffs, mind you, but the officials were poised to step in if there were.

ugh

That's just how football works
its a terrible idea to punt with such little time left.

What's that?
About the fourth drop for the Dolphins today?

Wildcat! and it worked famously

Damned wildcat.
Someone should separate Pennington’s shoulder on those plays.

Sorry, but you're wrong
that choice NEVER works out. EVER. It is always a terrible idea.
by bondslegend on Dec 14, 2008 12:41 PM PST up reply actions
well we'll be getting the ball back with over 2 minutes, now
good field position, and the potential to play the game’s final drive – which, if it ends in the end zone – would be the winner.
So we’ll see.
Cmon
you really think that’s because of talent? That was pure luck on the FG
but yes, it did sort of work. If they’d gone for it, it would have been a lot easier to get the points.
by bondslegend on Dec 14, 2008 12:46 PM PST up reply actions
pure luck?
20 mph winds from a good distance, from a kicker that is far from automatic.
Talent may not have been the cause, but Coach Sing played the odds…and the first dice roll went his way.
And also, say they did go for it on 4th down and make it then continue down the field and score a touchdown…. that would have given Miami the chance to hold the ball for the last drive of the game – where a FG would win it.
The net of that punt was like 20 yards
it made no difference if they went or punted.
by bondslegend on Dec 14, 2008 12:50 PM PST up reply actions
There's no way of knowing if it would have been 20 yards closer
we could have made it. We’ve been picking up those 5 yard-to-go downs all day
by bondslegend on Dec 14, 2008 12:52 PM PST up reply actions
And look at the percentages
It’s much more likely that you win if you go for it in that situation. History has proven that.
by bondslegend on Dec 14, 2008 12:53 PM PST up reply actions
apart from the time portion of my argument
which you are ignoring, is that the only odds that changed were the number of chances.
Instead of 4th and x, where it all would have come down to one play, and still wouldn’t have guaranteed anything but another opportunity for Miami’s offense, we gave ourselves a full drive’s worth of downs to work with.
If we went 0-for-4 on that last set of plays from about the same part of the field, why are you so confident that we’d have made it on just one play?
Here's what I'm confiedent of:
if you look at the history of NFL and college games, when a team punts with about 5 minutes left to go in the game and is in reasonable field position, they lose the game. I have history on my side- it is almost always the worst call, and right up until the FG barely missed, it was the wrong call.
Either way, we lost, but I’d rather lose being aggresive.
by bondslegend on Dec 14, 2008 12:59 PM PST up reply actions
it's all point of view, then, I guess
In my opinion, going for it on 4th in that situation could be considered the “traditional” call – Coach Sing invested his confidence in his defensive unit, which had done far better at stopping Miami had than the offensive unit had at putting the ball in the end zone all day.
By punting, odd as it may sound, Coach Sing went with what I would call the “aggressive” call. He gave the ball back, knowing that he’d get another chance to win it – and he did.
And the loss was not a result of this decision. He voted for his defense over the offensive unit, and they didn’t let him down. Our guys couldn’t score when we had a chance later on, and that’s what killed us. This, if anything, should further illustrate the point that Coach Sing was trying to make.
besides...
again, to stress the time issue:
Say we…
-we go for it on 4th
-make it
-continue the drive
-score six (somehow)
This makes it a 16-14 game with, say, 3 minutes left on the clock.
Miami still gets the ball back with a chance to win it with a FG. Our defense still has to stop them in a similar, if not identical position.
And that’s IF all of these things go perfectly in our favor.

That could have been a disaster.
Stupid fan threw off our momentum
Yeah, I know that. But it makes sense, I think.
That doesn’t change the questionable play calling to end the game, especially the 3rd and 10 end zone attempt
Why? That doesn’t make any sense, the play was over.

Because that's the play that the penalty came from.
On a roughing the kicker penalty, the down is replayed, isn’t it? I know it’s not completely the same, but the penalty was still a part of the play IMO.
No, it’s not even close to the same. Roughing the kicker happens during the play. The taking off your helmet on the field penalty comes after the whistle. Once the whistle blows, it’s the next play/down.

Sure.
If Rossum were returning kicks and Gore was playing they would have won.
by Bob In Beaverton on Dec 14, 2008 12:57 PM PST up reply actions
I don't know if I'd attribute the loss to Gore's absence
Foster played really well all day. I can’t remember him coming up short anywhere where I’d have said “Frank would have made that play” – can you?
No but there may have been some breakaways
by baybruin415 on Dec 14, 2008 12:59 PM PST up reply actions
I was thinking
that with Gore playing that on some of those pass plays the Dolphins wouldn’t have had six DBs in coverage. Foster played well, but he doesn’t get the respect that Gore does.

Sims should have had help
You can’t expect Sims to take on the NFL’s leading pass rusher 1 on 1, Martz leaves his QB out to dry everywhere he goes, 5 wide is not Shaun Hill’s game

True, and there was a minute on the clock.
Should have called something underneath the play before.

i thought so at the time, maybe not now
