Joe Starkey retiring from 49er broadcasts
"...has been juggling both Cal and 49ers broadcasts for nearly 20 years. Starkey said today that the travel burden simply had become too much to handle."
Starkey will continue with his Cal job.

I’m saddened. I don’t know about everyone else but I really like Joe Starkey. I’m not sure if it’s just because he’s been doing it for so long and so, to me, his voice evokes the 49ers memories or whatever, but it’ll be weird to not hear him behind the mic. At least he’ll still be calling Cal games.

I’m not saddened. He used to be really great, but lately every time I listened to him broadcast, I just found it painful. He’d call the weirdest parts of every play, have strange nicknames for the players… I don’t know… it just hasn’t been the same for me for a long time now.
But I won’t ever deny how good he was. I just don’t think he’s had it for a while now.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

I have never thought he was a very good play by play guy

nooo!
this is really a shame. I haven’t listened to him much in the past year or two since I get to watch the games on TV, but he is definitely my favorite play-by-play man that I’ve ever heard. His call of The Play and The Catch II were amazingly epic. I will miss you, Starkey.
STEVE HOLM! refuses to be the odd man out.
