Don't Get Too Excited
As happy as the W over the Bills made me, I thought that the team took a step backwards. After the 1st drive, we had virtually no offense. Frank Gore was completely shut down, and we had a hard time sustaining drives. Yes, we did execute in the red zone, and yes, we did close out a game. However, I am not too worried about execution. I think that the longer Singletary coaches, the more disciplined the 9ers will become.
We beat a 6-6 Bills team that has lost 5 of its last 6 games. Further, they played much of the game without thier starting QB, missed 2 FGs, and went for it on 4th down.
Meanwhile, we faced a much better Dallas team and outplayed them in the first quarter. If we had executed, we would have had a chance to legitimately beat a very good team. 6 points in 3 trips to the red zone (and a blown Pass Interference call)? Huge momentum swing on T.O.s long TD catch? Rossum's injury that left the 9ers with the ball (and without an amazing return man) at the 1 yard line and the offense in trouble (I wonder how the avg. yards per drive changes if you start with the ball at your own 1 yard line)?
Bad luck, semi-poor officiating, lack of execution, and a big momentum swing took the 49ers out of the game. Meanwhile, against the Bills we had good luck, and executed properly and barely got the win.
I don't know what I think about the current state of the 49ers. What I do know, is that I hope the 9ers that played the Cowboys, and not the 9ers that played the Bills, show up on Sunday.

be realistic
Any win this team gets is cause for enjoyment. They have been few and far between. I don’t care how they do it, just as long as they do it.

Look at the Kolts
While they definately have turned a corner, earlier in the season they had some uuuuuugly wins, squeaking out some victories that they shouldn’t have won. However, when you look at them now, they are once again a team to be feared, and not too many people think about those wins of the past.
I hate to quote Vin Deisel but, “It don’t matter if you win by an inch or a mile, winning’s winning.”
ESPECIALLY when it is your fourth win in week 13.
Blind devotion.

“Executed properly” by itself is a step forward. How many times did we get to see that while Nolan was around?

Don't ever...
… rip a team that’s struggled, probably, because of the weather. The first 10 minutes or so of the game was about the only time the weather was “good,” according to reporters. So the 49ers took advantage of that and had a difficult time producing when it became really wet and cold. Is there REALLY a problem with that?

I think there is something to get exicited about...
While these games may not be important when it comes to this year (unless the cardinals pull a ‘07 lions and lose the rest of their games and we somehow win all of ours), I think these games are important. If Shaun Hill continually improves and shows that he can lead this team, that’s important. If we see the development of a Jason Hill, Dominique Ziegler, or Josh Morgan, that’s important. If some defensive players can step up and be able to generate QB pressure or turnovers, that’s important. I would much rather go into the ’09 off season with a better grasp on what/who works for this team than have no idea at all.
And believe me I’m sure Mike Singletary thinks these games are important.

Actually, I’d like like to hear a bit of a deeper statistical review of how Shaun Hill performed against the Bills. It seems to me like, while he’s managed pretty well, he’s made at least one critical mistake in just about every game, but I don’t think he did against the Bills (unless my memory is failing me). If Hill playing better is the one thing we can take away from the last win, especially in the supposedly crappy conditions, that sounds like a lot to get excited about to me.

I completely agree...
that these games are important. I just think that at this point in the season, winning in itself has very little relevance (it is relevant because it gives us a lower draft picks, gives us confidence for next season, and experience in closing out games). I would much rather have a game where Shaun Hill improves, where are young wide receivers develop, and where we can actually get a pass rush, than a win where none of the following happen.
However, against the Bills, none of this happened (yes, Shaun Hill was relatively mistake free, but also did nothing spectacular).
Our offense looked worse than against the Cowboys (maybe as sfgfan said because of the weather). Besides Jason Hill, our younger WRs did nothing. And the only pass rush occured because of Losman’s franticness.

Young WRs
I don’t really think anyone expects anything out of any of the 49ers WRs other than Hill and Morgan. With that said, Hill producing (while not that impressive) is a fairly good sign. When Morgan was in there, he also showed some production.
I think the most important thing for the 49ers during the last few weeks is that they HAVE to figure out what they have in Shaun Hill. I’m not saying this because I want Shaun Hill to be the QB of the future, but I do think he could become a useful QB for the “immediate” future.
What do I mean by this? I think that the more growth Shaun Hill shows during this last few weeks, the less the 49ers would feel “inclined” to force the acquisition of a QB this offseason. If Hill shows he’s capable of managing the game and leading the team (as he’s done the past few weeks), then the 49ers can feel more comfortable using their first and second round picks on areas of other needs (since they have Hill signed for two more years after this) like finding a pass rusher or another offensive lineman.

Plus if Colt Mccoy comes out...
this year i really think his stock will fall into the third round or fourth, just based on how they usually knock down quality QBs who aren’t like physical specimens.

Being a 9er fan..
I have to say I’m slightly ashamed of being one sometimes not due to the play of the team but due to spoiled, whiney, impatient fellow fans. Every team is going to go through a low point. You can’t be great forever. Look at the other teams that are put in the great franchise category. The Cowboys and Steelers both had their dark times in the 80’s. The cowboys again in the late 90’s early 2000’s. We were great for so many years that once it’s our turn to go through a little bit of hell, many feel like the world is caving in on the team, oh the humanity. Lighten up guys. Enjoy the wins that we get. We will be good again. And remember that besides 2 other teams, every one else is still just trying to catch up to our Super Bowl total and in this game that is all that matters.
Fans stuck in the 80's are lame. Respect the past, live in the now.

Totally agree. Just roll with it. Dont look too hard into anything. Understand that any decision that our coaches, players, and staff make are ultimately made because they believe that it will give us the best chance to get better and win.

No Way Dude
The Cowboys have made the playoffs (lol) for the last few years. They have remained a force in the NFC during their “low point” after winning so much, and we got… Mike Nolan and JTO.
I understand we can’t be winners always, but I think that’s wearing thinner and thinner after being true perennial losers for how many seasons is it now? Six?
It’s time for this team to show us something. I’m sick of defending my Niner merch at work. We’re not the (s)Aint’s, we’re not born losers. We’re a classy organization that will win with heart and class (Titans), not by cheating (patriots), denial (raiders), deep pockets (Jerrah Jones Cowboys) or by pure dumb luck (chargers last season, saints two seasons ago).
Until Coach Sing got the nod, I was losing faith and fast. But I am now willing to go along with the rest of the rebuilding phase because I can actually see a light at the end of the tunnel and I feel like we won’t have wasted time like we did (pretty much) with Mooch and Nolan if we don’t win it all next season.

Ummmm no
how quickly you forget that Dallas hasn’t won a playoff game since their last Super Bowl. We’ve won in the playoffs long after they have. They still had their low time.

Man Please
We didnt waste time with Mooch. If i recall he was the last coach to get us into the playoffs. I was pissed off when he was fired. I was sorta angry about Nolan too because he’s the one who rebuilt this team from scratch. Right now we are all optimistic about Singletary, but you have got to remember that its with Nolans players, so give the guy some credit.
And i dont care if we have 20 more losing seasons. You dont put your team to the side because they arent performing up to your expectations. Ill defend the 9ers till the day i die cuz when that time comes when we are superbowl champions again it’ll make it that much better.

Just tell me
It doesn’t feel like a kick in the nuts when, season after season, commentators can’t stop ball washing the Cowboys and they treat the Niners as a must win matchup for just about every other team in the NFL, and I’ll concede the point.
