Offseason Signings
In the offseason, the niners will have to address several needs. Coach Signletary and Shaun Hills jobs appear to be secure, but we do need a back up QB, RT, NT, pass rushing OLB, CB(since Walt appears more of a nickle back these days), and a FS. Lucky for us, this drafy is loaded with Tackles, second round DTs, and pass rushers.
Now everybody knows that Alex Smith will either take a massive paycut or be released after this year, which should free up some major capital. Looking at the FA class, the DBs appear to be quite strong. Although the niners might question signing a #2 or even a #1 corner, since Nate Clemens (although excellent other than the Dallas game) has not proved to be the highest paid corner in the nfl. However, there is a lot of quality youth in these DBs, something you don't see to often in FA.
Nnamdi Asomugha This would definately cause controversy, since he would get nate clemens type money, but with the future releasing of Jonas Jenning and the paycut/release of Alex Smith, we could make a move for him. He is a hard worker who wanted to win, and is around this area. I bet he would be thrilled to work with a guy like Mike Singletary. And seeing the raiders current situation and the fact that he was franchised last year, I don't see why we couldn't sign him. As for on the field, he may not have the best stats, but in 15 games, his receivers has been thrown to 18 times! Thats absurd. Imagine that secondary. Our secondary would be our pass rush, because QBs would stand there for 5 seconds scratching their head before P willie decideds to charge in.
Dawan Landry This is unlikely saying he is most likely to be franchised, but its worth stating that he's out there and he is only 25. He would be a ajor upgrade from Roman.
Duante Robinson Not only does this guy share the name with the coolest backyard football player of all time, but he is young and can play. He has amazing speed, and would make a solid #2 corner. His coverage skills are questionable, but I think we would be more than happy to add him.
There are plenty of other names out there, but those were the player that stood out to me who would be good for the team to aquire. Lets hope next for a successful offseason and hope next year we don't have to write about the offseason until late January or FeburaryThis is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Nnamdi
Won’t he get franchised again? He’d be a beast but I really wonder if the 49ers splurge a ton of cash again, or just try and do well with the draft and some role players.

I’m pretty sure you cannot be frnachised agian, you must be offered a long term deal, which i doubt he would take.

franchise tag
A player can be franchised 3 times (at least according to this story). How many times has Asomugha been franchised?

It's also possible...
… that part of being Franchised before was that he wouldn’t be again. Haven’t players had that kind of clause written into their franchise contract?

That has happened before...
…but I just looked up Asomugha at Rotoworld and under past news (from November 6) was the following:
NFL.com’s Adam Schefter reports that the Raiders fully anticipate slapping the franchise tag on CB Nnamdi Asomugha again this offseason.
Those selfish Raiders. Asomugha, who’s been targeted by offenses on only about 10 plays this year, will make roughly $11.7 million in 2009 if he’s franchised again. The Raiders ought to shop him. Asomugha turns 28 before next season and Oakland needs all the draft slots it can get. They are down second-, third-, and fifth-round draft picks due to awful previous trades.

I think...
… a team (not necessarily the 49ers, of course) may pounce on the opportunity if the Raiders are willing to take a 2nd and maybe a 4th for him if they franchise and trade him.
I can’t envision a team giving up more, because my understanding is that a franchised player can’t sign a new contract until that NFL year (that he is franchised for) is over. So it’s like giving up draft picks for a player in the last year of his contract, except there’s an additional damning stipulation.

Smith != massive amounts of salary cap $$
Smith restructuring his deal or being cut really doesn’t free up a whole lot of cap room at all. He’s due to make about $3M next season in base-pay, and then close to $5M the following year, which is all the team would probably save.
While it would be awesome to have two really good cornerbacks, I’d be wary about pumping $13M+ of the salary cap in just those two positions every year. This is especially true if you consider the other needs the 49ers have (that you also mentioned). I know that they’re relatively unproven or inconsistent, but Spencer, Brown and Smith will all need a shot at some point to be the starter opposite Clements. If Harris proves he can’t keep up, it would be a perfect chance for those younger guys to step in and show the team what they’ve got (especially Spencer and Brown, who may be up for extensions in the coming years).
Honestly, it’ll all depend on who actually hits the free agent market. If there’s a really good defensive lineman out there, I’d probably be more inclined to pursue that player than a player in the secondary.

Dline
the dline class is amazing, peppers, tommy harris, abert haynesworth, and even betrent barry. The fact is that this draft is loaded with Dline talent and we should cash in on that. This FA class has a lot of youth and signing a guy like robinson, landry, or nnamdi would be lkke getting another first round pick. Plus the likelyhood of them being avalible is far greater than any of those 4 linemen. And besides haynesworth, they are all pretty inconsistant.

Why?
We have a very serviceable corp. With Zeig., Morgan, Hill, Battle, and possibly Johnson next year, we should focus on more important holes. It gets redundant stating that we need a OT, DE (pass rusher), corner, etc. and I think those would be a lot more sensible to fill first.

How bout these names...
Jordan Gross, UFA, Carolina Panthers
Bertrand Berry, UFA, Arizona Cardinals
Albert Haynesworth, UFA, Tennessee Titans
Tank Johnson, UFA, Dallas Cowboys
They can all be starters in the NFL… maybe we can target Gross to solidify that OL and all DL men can be used in a 3-4… TJ maybe too small but he was dominant in Chicago before he got into trouble
Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

Jordan Gross
Although he is an all-pro tackle who can play at both RT or LT, I don’t think he would work out in San Francisco. There is no denying that offensive lines play better as a unit. Looking at the teams that have success in the league, they not only have great offensive lines, but the same personel. With Gross turning 29 in a few months, he would be much older than Staley(24), Baas(27), Wallace(22), Synder(26) and Rachael(22). The only one around his age is Heitman, but center is a position where awareness and experience is crucial, so it’s not a bad thing to have a guy a few years older directing them. I’m not saying that signing Gross is bad thing, in fact, I would be very thrilled, but with the amount of talent in this years draft at the Tackle position and with young quality FAs (something you don’t see to often) I’d rather focus spendings on different areas.

Haynesworth!!!!
please, oh please…….I really believe we are a dominant NT away from making the 3-4 work and having a top tier D. Haynesworth would be worth the massive amounts of cash it would take to land him. When I heard about his free agency clause due to making the Pro Bowl I almost swerved off the road. Theres not a defensive player I’d rather add to our team.

Dominant 3-4.
I think the team needs at least one pass rusher that can split time with Lawson, too.

FA
Hanyesworth would be amazing, so would gross and nnamdi. Other than those three however, I don’t like us signing a guy in his late 20s to early 30s for a large contract. I wrote this post to point out that although CB and FS lesser needs, the fact that we could sign a proven guy only 1 or 2 years older than the 3rd round pick we would spend would be great.

yea I love Nmadi, but I dont know if he’s worth all the money it will cost when we are already paying Clements so much. I certainly wouldnt be disapointed to have hime though.

yea maybe, but I think if we had Haynesworth eating up offensive linemen youd see guys like haralson and Smith being far more effective pass rushers. great 3-4’s dont always have a big name pass rusher but then almost always have a dominant NT.

Terrel Suggs
Isn’t this guy a FA? He’s been a 3-4 OLB and a pro bowler at that. Plus, I’m pretty sure he played for Singletary. Might not cost as much as Haynesworth, Peppers, or As…ha. That might leave room for another quality FA.

Salary Cap issues
Remember, although Haynesworth would be an ideal NT for the 49ers, there is the issue of salary cap. How much will Haynesworth demand in the open market after having a great season? I know that Isaac Sopoanga, Kentwan Balmer, Aubrayo Franklin and Ronnie Fields are not the answer as NT’s for the team, but, it would be very difficult to give Haynesworth big money for one position. In the mean time, how many stud nose tacles are there coming out for next year’s draft? If Alex Smith gives the 49ers some cap relief, maybe, just maybe, Haynesworth could make the defense quite good if not spectacular.

Because you can’t rely on a guy who (although playing well) has had 3 or 4 good games in 2 seasons, not to mention the fact that even in those games, he still got single teamed. In a 3-4, the NT is support to free OLB and he isn’t doing that. However, he is playing well enough that if we don’t sign Hanyeworth and Terrence Cody does not lose about 20 pounds, we may have to live with him for 1 more year. One of the great things about the nfl is the minimal guarenteed money. Gaining cap relief is pretty easy, and we are definately going to get some from Smith, Jennings, and Banta-Cain.

I’d much prefer a pass rushing d-lineman than any linebacker. Especially since I like all the current linebackers on the team.
Also.. I like Dashon Goldson and Tarrell Brown and believe they need to get a better shot next season.

Pepper is going to stay in Carolina whether he is franchised or signed long term. PERIOD. Money is not an issue for the niners, saying that we are likely only going to sign a few free agents this year. Peppers is an athletic freak so he could survive in any scheme. Pretty much, it is the fact that he won’t be avaliable, also he can be inconsistant and the draft class is strong at DE/OLB.

Leonard Weaver
The Sea hawks site mentions that the hiring of Greg Knapp as coordinator might have an effect on FB Leonard Weaver. Knapp doesn’t run with his fullback so Weaver’s value to the team goes down considerably. The move might keep them from resigning him.
I liked Keasey last year but Singletary might be looking for a bigger fullback and Weaver is pretty good.
