Week 16 Prediction Games: The Results

I finished all my christmas shopping today. I'm finishing all of my christmas wrapping right after I finish with these results. WIth that in mind, I'll forego my usual brilliant tangential ramblings. I won't even talk about how by the New Year I will be the fattest I've ever been. Hell, as a sign of how dedicated I am to doing this thing quickly, I won't even make fun of groug. And he's a ripe target. You all know he is, too.

But none of that is to say that I won't ramble brilliantly or tangentially, or both even. That's not to say that I'm not 180 pounds and climbing, with no looking back in the foreseeable future. Hell, that's not even to say that groug's fat melon head isn't shaped like a butt. It's just to say that I don't have time for all that crap today.

Sorry. Maybe next week.

Now THAT'S a week! Let's get started!

ro128487 and sfgfan are the clear winners of the week. Both guys managed perfect scores, and both performances put them from being in positions of waning or no hope into being very clearly in the playoff hunt. ro128487's 35 current points are especially impressive since he's only played a partial season.

I think that in light of sfgfan's onslought, it's worth congratulating me. Me, and Josh from Hollywood, that is. Both of us did just enough this week to hold sfgfan off. Both of us moved within one point of the playoff seeding tiebreaker. Both of us are pretty awesome. And I mean half of that from the bottom of my heart.

albertoleecho and wjackalope both also deserve mentions. albertoleecho regained (granted, shared) possession of third place after what seemed like weeks of slumming it. wjackalope had a quiet but nonetheless solid week, a brief reminder of what made him so dominant for so long, and a prelude to what should be a very interesting race to first place.

And I'd be loathe to not mention StrictlyFootball. Or, I mean, I'd be loathed. By him. But he had a very nice week and really deserves to be recognized. To think that after weeks of talking about wjackalope, albertoleecho, Niner Fan Lost in WI, and Ninerfromacrossthepond, it would be a fifth party who was was in third place and surging? Kudos.

Losers include groug. Man, I just can't help myself. I'd better never meet him in real life, though. Not if I like my ribs. And I do! I really, really do.

Hey, Fooch! You also scored! Actually, you're in pretty good shape up there. Is the final leg of the "lull them into a false sense of security and then strike before it's too late" strategy coming into play next week? Inquiring minds may or may not want to know. They're being uncharacteristically coy about the whole thing.

From a little after two oclock until almost sundown of the long still hot weary dead September afternoon they sat in what Mrs. Coldfield still called the office because her father had called it that--a dim hot airless room with the blinds all closed and fastened for forty-three summers because when she was a girl someone had believed that light and moving air carried heat and that dark was always cooler, and which (as the sun shone fuller and fuller on that side of the house) became latticed with yellow slashes full of dust motes which Quentin thought of as being flecks of the deal olf dried paint itself blown inward from the scaling blinds as wind might have blown them.

For Christ's sake, I forgot how long Faulkner's sentences were. And that's one of his short ones....

Down to the wire

A whole lot of folks in the running for that last playoff spot. Could get ugly this weekend.

It might be a good time to explain the seeding tiebreaker.

For those who don’t remember or who weren’t here: I go back through every single week of the contest and count up the number of first place scores that each tied member got in total. The player with the most first place finishes wins the tiebreak. The secondary tiebreak is second place finishes. The third tiebreak is third place finishes. If all is still even after that, we go with a two-pronged 8 seed because, man, I’ll be sick and tired of counting stuff.

Or, you know, however many prongs it takes. I really can’t see it getting that far, though.

random drawing?

If there is a tie after third place finishes it’ll be by random draw. I’ll write each contestant’s name on a piece of paper, stick it in a hat and whomever I draw wins. My Mac comes with a little video camera on it so I can record it and post the video to the page.

Unless there are an insane amount of complaints or a really, really awesome alternative, I’m happy with that.

personally

I’m fine either way, but I see no reason why it can’t be 3 people one on one on one.

Early in the week, I’ll throw up a pole to see if people want to tie-break for the eighth seed or if they want to have everyone in eihgth go through. It really should be what the players want.

I’ll also throw up a poll, in case nobody sees the pole. Although, I don’t see who could possibly miss a 75-foot pole staring them in the face….

Thanks for the quick results!

And damn you for not giving me free points! Let me know what it will take to bribe my way into a prize position.

Oh and wjackalope, you got lucky in our 17th place matchup in Niners Nation 4…
Next season I’m going to draft Elliot Gould as my starting PK…and Robert Goulet as my starting defense…GOULET!

If God had intended us not to rosterbate, he would've made our arms shorter.

Luck

After Sunday, I was almost certain I was going to end up with a goose egg again. Glad to see I didn’t.

Sooo there are eight playoff spots? I guess I need another lucky guess this week, as I still need (probably) at least 3 points next week to crack the top 8.

I'm confused

about this whole playoff thing. Can someone explain it to me.

by Number22Drew on Dec 23, 2008 10:03 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

playoffs

The top 8 seeds square off in a post-season playoff. 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6, 4 vs. 5. It carries through the 4 rounds of the real playoffs.

For those who don’t make the playoffs there will be a postseason prediction contest similar to what we’ve got going for the regular season.

Yup. That way the people who stuck with the game but didn’t win in the regular still get rewarded for doing well, and get another shot at an actual prize. It gives a reason to keep playing the last few weeks, too.

Likewise, the SEPARATE, simultaneous free-for-all playoff predictions games gives those who may not have done well another chance to score some glory, and a prize.

I’ll make a comprehensive post on the rules early next week. The head to head matchups have slightly modified rules, and the free-for-all has slightly modified scoring.

To be loathed is to be loved...

Although I predict a serious choke job this week and I finish one spot out of the playoffs. And Josh from Hollywood and sfgfan sneaks into the playoffs

That would have to be one intense choke job.

I'm already choking

3 points in 3 weeks isn’t gonna cut it.
I think I may really flail and some people are gonna leapfrog me and I’ll be 9th.

ya when i predict the score i normally just put down random numbers taht are common in football, so i was surprised that i got perfect :)

Boy did I need those 2pts from the NE game

I thought I had hit the wall once I’d got in front, but those 2pts have given me some breathing room.
Had the cheeky idea of posting identical scores as wjackalope for final week but, being British you know, that wouldn’t be fair’n’all.

by Ninerfromacrossthepond on Dec 23, 2008 5:47 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

well that hurt

two games I get a raw score of 6, and they’re both only good for 3rd place. Ouch. At least I squeaked out points in the Niner game. Gonna take a great week to get back my rightful position on top.
