San Francisco 49ers 2009 Opponents

I'll have plenty more to discuss about the 49ers 2009 opponents, but for now I just want to get the teams up and out there.

Home
Atlanta Falcons
Detroit Lions
Chicago Bears
Jacksonville Jaguars
Tennessee Titans
Arizona Cardinals
St. Louis Rams
Seattle Seahawks

Away
Minnesota Vikings
Green Bay Packers
Indianapolis Colts
Houston Texans
St. Louis Rams
Arizona Cardinals
Seattle Seahawks
Philadelphia Eagles

Obviously where some of those games fall in the schedule will give us a better idea of how winnable they are.  I'll have my initial 2009 predictions in the coming weeks, as well as a look back at last year's predictions.  For now, the strength of schedule based on 2008 is .443 based on a record of 113-142-1.  Even better?  Only two games in the eastern time zone this year.  Take that 10am East Coast record!

Is it just me

or does it feel like we play the Eagles every year?

I like this schedule a lot…based on the way those teams played this year, Tennessee looks to be the only one that looms as a likely loss. They ought to be right in on most every one of those games next year.

Indy @ Indy, GB @ GB?

Neither of those could be considered “likely wins”

by mikev on Dec 29, 2008 1:19 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

A game not being a “likely loss” does not mean it’s a “likely win”. I think the Titan and Colt games are going to be real tough to win but I don’t think Green Bay is any more likely to beat the Niners than the Niners are to beat them.

by methodrampage on Dec 29, 2008 1:25 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think Green Bay will depend on when it's scheduled.

If it’s when the weather should be just “crappy” I think it’ll be a winnable game.

If it’s when the weather is “OMFG it’s so cold that I can’t feel my lower body and my eyes are frozen in the open position” it’ll be a hell of a lot harder to win.

by mikev on Dec 29, 2008 1:29 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Honestly, I think the Niners are built better for poor weather

I think the Packers are built too much around the pass and if it’s a poor weather game I’d take the Niners’ rushing attack over the Packers’ which would lead me to take the Niners over the Packers.

exactly

My point was, this year you could look at Dallas, New England, NY Giants (off the top of my head) and figure that they would lose, but you can’t really do that next year. Indy is a good team, mind you, but not a certain loss.

I'm not sure if you're joking or if you're just dense

He’s saying that, less the Titans, there aren’t really any sure thing losses on the schedule. Which means there are a bunch of games that the Niners should be competitive in, which can go either way.

by methodrampage on Dec 29, 2008 2:58 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I wouldnt even say the titans are a sure loss

Sure they have a good running game, but Kerry Collins is getting grayer and grayer, Vince Young is, lets face it, insane, and without Albert Haynesworth the D seems to fall apart. While it will be a tough game, I wouldn’t say its a likely loss, especially with Haynesworth looking on his way out for more money elsewhere.

Blind devotion.

by ProfessorBigelow on Dec 29, 2008 3:01 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He said originally..

TEN only looms like the likely loss. Loss meaning “lose”. Pardon me if you feel that’s “being dense”, but at least I’m not a foolish homer. There are a lot of factors that go into a season, and it’s way too early to prognosticate next season’s w-l, especially since they lost 2 in their own weak division.

by drummer on Dec 29, 2008 3:12 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

projections

I think the whole intention was that there are a lot of winnable games. We obviously won’t win them a wall, and an optimistic approach might have us winning 9 at most. It’s just that we have a lot of games where if things break the right way, we can swing some upsets. At this point last year, opponents like New England and Dallas seemed like definite losses and they turned out that way. Other games seemed like not necessarily definite losses. Maybe losses, maybe wins.

I understand that...

But nobody is thinking on how a lot of those teams will be improved next season as well.

by drummer on Dec 29, 2008 3:17 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

correct

Every team will be different heading into 2009 but it’s more just a look at things as they are since that’s all we really have to go on. But I do agree it’s entirely possible things could go to hell again.

I'm not saying things will go to hell...

I think the 49ers can make a serious run at the division title, but that’s because the division is weak.

by drummer on Dec 29, 2008 3:27 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

NFC Worst

That is very true. Praise be to a crappy division.

He never said the 49ers go 16-0.

It may be too early to accurately project wins and losses but that doesn’t mean we can’t attempt to. What else are we going to do? Based on how the Niners finished the season I agree with UnleashTheGore’s general idea that there are a bunch of winnable games and there’s no foolish homerism in that.

by methodrampage on Dec 29, 2008 3:35 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Basing it on how the 49ers finished..

May trick you into Fool’s Gold as well. A comeback win against a bad Rams team isn’t something to think you can beat IND with.

by drummer on Dec 29, 2008 3:39 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

True but it’s not something I’m going to base a loss to IND on.

by methodrampage on Dec 29, 2008 3:40 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

let me summon my inner Chandler Bing...

could you BE taking me any more literally?

I thought the first post was understandable, and after my second explanation I thought it had dumbed down what my feelings were. I guess we have to dumb it down even further. My apologies for not clarifying enough.

I do not think the 49ers will win all their games next year. I would be shocked if they won more than 9 games next year. Again, my point was this:

this year you could look at Dallas, New England, NY Giants (off the top of my head) and figure that they would lose, but you can’t really do that next year

I’m talking near certain losses, not that Tennessee will be the only team they lose to. There are certain games you look at on the schedule and think, “oh crap, they’re gonna lose those for sure.”, and next year there are very few of those.

STEVE HOLM! refuses to be the odd man out.

I understood your post...

And I’m saying you overstated your stance with it.

by drummer on Dec 29, 2008 4:34 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Who gives a crap!

Next year is a new year. All teams have the clean slate and all that crap. Anything can happen blah blah blah yatta yatta yatta. Then teams choke, some more epic than others. Happens every year we just have to wait and see. Anything short of playoffs for the 9ers next year WILL be dissappointing.

Ok, Debbie Downer. Optimism never hurt anybody ;).

by Cruithear on Dec 29, 2008 11:23 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You have to look at this reality..

The 49ers are on the 3rd HC since Mooch, their 3rd GM since Walsh, and now have a 27 year old Team Prez, who, like all of the other Execs, have more to do with Wall St. than football.

Add to the fact that they basically have the same people from the Nolan regime, and you can see why I don’t drink their Kool-Aid (even though they took the lock off of the caged bottles).

by drummer on Dec 29, 2008 11:42 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't see whats so unrealistic

About thinking that there is only one or two games on the schedule where the Niners might completely get their ass kicked.

by methodrampage on Dec 30, 2008 7:41 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Is it just me

Or do we play the Cardinals, Rams, and Seahawks every year?

It’s just you. We didn’t play them all in 2001.

eagles, colts, vikings, packers, texans, rams usually would start at 10 am for us

clarification

I meant games where we’re playing specifically in the eastern time zone.

Crazy Fans

I don’t normally call out crazy commenters (it’s easier to let them expose themselves). But there’s a regular over at Sando’s blog that is mildly amusing. Head over to Sando’s post about the 49ers 2009 opponents and read the comments by LA49ers. From what I’ve read, he’s a very negative fan and I’m not even sure if he’s actually a 49ers fan (although he comments there ALL the time). Anyways, mild amusement for the afternoon.

He got trashed on this site for wanting the 9ers to move to LA so badly I believe.

LA49er

There’s a guy named LA49er. Looking at some of his past comments it can’t possibly be the same guy. LA49er (registered here) actually makes good points and seems to be a good fan. The one at ESPN just spews venom about the team and everything it concerns. I’m guessing they’re different.

I just read all of this guys comments

Definitley can’t be the same guy. There isn’t anyone THAT negative around here… we would have ripped him apart for more than wanting the niners to move to LA

Blind devotion.

This guy isn't as bad...

as that one troll Guest49er. He actually called into Damon Bruce’s show, and sounded worse than he posted. LOL, he even pimped his posting nic on his show “This is Guest49er”, like he was pround of all of the work he did. He along with that one troll on Maiocco’s blog are 49er legends.

Which isn’t a good thing.

Predictions

I’d like to see predictions now, after the game dates are released, before the draft (taking off-season moves into account), after the draft, and after the last preseason game.
