Niners to sign DeShaun Foster?

John Clayton says so.  Foster has always been injury-prone but would definitely be an upgrade over Michael Robinson.  As much as I love watching Gore run, I am constantly nervous that one of his knees will explode again, so acquiring a high-quality backup is a good move.  At age 28, Foster still has big-play ability and is a good receiver out of the backfield.  He needs to recover from the fumbling problems that popped up this past season, but if he comes at the right price he will be a good addition.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Yup
I'm not linking to these in order to say "we talked about this keep it one place!" I'm not doing that. Absolutely not. What I am doing is linking to them because they're completely buried, nobody will see them otherwise, and since you made this relevant and useful Diary they belong here.

I'll also post the text:

Adios Hicks

Apparently the Niners are close to signing Deshaun Foster.  I really like the idea, Foster can't stay healthy enough to be an everydown back but I think he could compliment Gore nicely.

Also, I think Rossum can replace whatever we're losing in kick coverage.  So I'd say Rossum + Foster is an upgrade over Hicks + Lewis.

Here's to hoping Albert Hanyesworth stomps on Alex Smith's head.

I'd be happy with that

When Foster got cut I nearly wrote a Diary to catch the local pulse on that, but it just slipped my mind while I was doing something else.

I think it would be a very good signing. Pretty low risk. Obviously solid reward. Do it!

Weird
Now that I look at it, they weren't completely buried at all. For some reason even though I linked to them (used a search to find them), I just thought they were in one of the "falling off the main page story" posts. I had that Justin Smith one in my mind. These actually came from the Diary right below this one. And I participated, so obviously I'm just losing my mind.

Oh well. Who needs it?

Either way, this easily deserved its own diary for discussion. Nothing like a little Gore-surance!

Thomas Clayton
I guess this means Clayton won't be getting a chance.  Too bad, I wanted to see what he could do.

Clayton
I read recently that Clayton hasn't done himself any favors among the coaching staff.  I don't remember where I read it, but the gist of it all is that the coaching staff felt he wasn't ready this past season.

It's always possible that Michael Robinson shifts to H-back in Martz' system, as Martz doesn't generally use a "true" FB anyhow.  This scenario, possibly unlikely, would allow the 49ers to carry Gore, Foster and Clayton at HB and Robinson as 3rd-down and H-back.  Of course, Clayton would have to hit the ground running in a few weeks at mini-camps and OTAs.

Nice to see you!
Hope everything has been good.

Hmm
I did not hear that.  That certainly adds a wrinkle to it.  I'm not really a fan of Nolan's doghouse, as it seems once someone gets there, there is no coming back.

I wouldn't say...
... that Clayton is in his dog house though, and I apologize if I made it sound that way.  From what I understand, the team just isn't sure if he's "ready" yet.  Instead of banking on the fact that he is ready, they went ahead and signed an insurance plan (Foster) to just a notch above league minimum and extended a very versatile back (Robinson) that could still fill other roles on the field if Clayton (or even a draft pick from this year) make the roster as a HB.
