Rosevelt Colvin
The Pats cut him today. He will be 32 next season, but he is a pretty good pass rushing OLB in a 3-4 scheme. A 1-2 year deal with Colvin would be a much better investment then signing Briggs to a long term deal imo. I know the Banta-Cain signing didn't work out like some thought, but Colvin has a much better track record.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Banta-Cain
If it's the second, it might also point toward the reason Lawson has been ineffective as a pass rusher and signal that we might not need to be so preoccupied with "OMG Pass rushing LB!11!" and should be much more concerned about the line (because anybody we bring in will just continue to struggle and we'll be like "wtf?"). If, otoh, it's the first thing, then maybe we do have an actual talent problem in the LB corps.
Either way, I'm absolutely not against exploring these option. I just sometimes think, "Maybe the LBs we have are actually doing what we pay them to do... maybe they don't need to be improved this much."
If we're talking about obvious major improvements, though, none of this musing matters. They should always make obvious major improvements. I'm just not sure that Colvin would be that.

I don't the 9ers have Colvin in their plans
Associated Press
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers re-signed linebacker Roderick Green on Tuesday, shortly before the veteran pass-rusher would have become an unrestricted free agent.

Colvin is not a better option than Briggs.
Continuing to find the free agent in the rough kis an exercise in futility. On "D" go with proof not excuses. Colvin is more productive than Banta-Cain but thats not saying too much.
I have to concur with 'How they Scored.' Until we get our D-line up to par it won't matter who we have backing up the play.

Briggs
NO BRIGGS DEAL IN SAN FRAN (YET)
Despite rampant rumors and speculation that the San Francisco 49ers already have a wink-nod deal in place with linebacker Lance Briggs, a source close to the situation tells us that the 49ers currently aren't even among the teams that are interested in his services.
Other teams are interested in Briggs, and we're told that there's actually a chance that he'll stay in Chicago. But, as to Briggs, the pre-free agency tamper-fest that infects the league in late February has not included the Niners.
It could be that the 49ers backed off as a result of the tampering charges that the Bears filed in 2007 as a result of contract discussions between the Niners and Briggs' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, that allegedly occurred in connection with failed trade talks between the two teams. If so, Chicago's apparent strategy -- i.e., file the charges in order to get San Fran to back off -- apparently worked.
But that hasn't kept other teams from making it known that they have an interest in the Tampa Two weakside specialist. And it doesn't mean that the Niners won't swoop in once Briggs officially hits the market on Friday.
For now, though, the Niners aren't in the mix.

Calvin Pace
There are expected to be six or seven teams in the bidding for Pace. It'll take at least $14 million guaranteed to sign Pace, and the 49ers are willing to pay at least that price, a league source said.

Pace would seem like a good addition as a pass rushing LB who would be more versatile than just that.

Pace
I read this on AOL Sports:
The Bears would love to retain Briggs. But they have already made a huge investment at the position (four-time All-Pro Brian Urlacher has four seasons remaining on a $56.6 million contract), and Briggs has persistently angled for a chance to test free agency. Linebackers aren't as coveted as cornerbacks or defensive ends. But Briggs is a cornerstone player, given his exceptional combination of size, speed and instincts.
There was a rumor at the combine that Briggs was going to get $35 million in guarantees from the 49ers. But that doesn't come as a huge shock since his agent is Drew Rosenhaus, someone who revels in playing "the game."
The 49ers, however, do make sense since Briggs was born in Sacramento and attended high school in Elk Grove, Calif.
The Niner rumors are all over the place. We'd be lucky to sign 2 of the 3 from Smith, Briggs and Pace but damn if we hit on all three...<speechless>.

Offense is highly Overrated.
And we have an offense...Gore is solid, Smith 'will' mature this year, our O-line is looking stable for the first time in years(I miss Bob McKittrick), having a real Offensive coordinator in Martz will help more than any free agent receiver we can hope to land. Why do you think that our D has been the focus the past 2 years? It was porous, malodorous, and dirty/undisciplined. Now with PWills, Clements, Spencer, Lawson, and Harris all we need is a solid guy like Smith to make us a ball control/in your face type of team.

Our o-line is looking stable, uh er, wtf?
Granted this is the same group that did a solid job in 06'. However, they imploded last year. Allen got into it on the sideline with another lineman, Jonas went batty, and the others well they showed up, I'll give them that.
This line isn't complete trash. But to say it "is looking stable" is egregious and erroneous.
Also consider that Staley is making a switch this year? It will be interesting to see how he responds. Then you got Larry Allen who might retire.
Where is the stability of which you speak?
