Rosevelt Colvin

The Pats cut him today. He will be 32 next season, but he is a pretty good pass rushing OLB in a 3-4 scheme. A 1-2 year deal with Colvin would be a much better investment then signing Briggs to a long term deal imo. I know the Banta-Cain signing didn't work out like some thought, but Colvin has a much better track record.

Banta-Cain
I knew he wasn't going to be some kind of real force, but as a pass rushing specialist I always wondered this year if his production shortcomings stemmed more from him just coming as ascouted, or if they stemmed more from the poorness of the play on the D-line.

If it's the second, it might also point toward the reason Lawson has been ineffective as a pass rusher and signal that we might not need to be so preoccupied with "OMG Pass rushing LB!11!" and should be much more concerned about the line (because anybody we bring in will just continue to struggle and we'll be like "wtf?"). If, otoh, it's the first thing, then maybe we do have an actual talent problem in the LB corps.

Either way, I'm absolutely not against exploring these option. I just sometimes think, "Maybe the LBs we have are actually doing what we pay them to do... maybe they don't need to be improved this much."

If we're talking about obvious major improvements, though, none of this musing matters. They should always make obvious major improvements. I'm just not sure that Colvin would be that.

I keep reliving the moment when Steve Young almost fell down... over and over....

In that first paragraph
I meant "stemmed from him just not coming as scouted."

I don't the 9ers have Colvin in their plans
Niners re-sign linebacker Green before he becomes free agent

Associated Press

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers re-signed linebacker Roderick Green on Tuesday, shortly before the veteran pass-rusher would have become an unrestricted free agent.

Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

Because we signed Roderick Green?
They'd have little to do with each other, Green probably signed for the league minimum.
Here's to hoping Albert Hanyesworth stomps on Alex Smith's head.

actually...
Colvin is being coveted as a pash rushing Lbacker isn't that what Green is?

33 tackles; 8.5 sacks; 4 seasons
Green is a scrub that was on the practice squad for half the season.  He's also failed to start a game in 4 seasons.  Why would signing a benchwarmer prohibit the Niners from pursuing Colvin?
Here's to hoping Albert Hanyesworth stomps on Alex Smith's head.

he's too old
if they signed him it wouldn't be for much and they won't make a serious play for him.

Colvin is not a better option than Briggs.
Hmmm...let's see an aged "pass rushing" LB that gets released by a team that prides it's LB's play(see Banta-Cain), or a complete tackling machine that would automatically boost the Niners LB core in to the stratosphere. I vote for Briggs. Could you imagine a 3-4 scheme with Lawson, Banta-Cain, Willis, and Briggs? I can it's called the 2000 Ravens. Hmmm...does anyone know who was coaching with the Ravens back in 2000? here's a hint:he wears suits on the Niner's sideline every Sunday!
Continuing to find the free agent in the rough kis an exercise in futility. On "D" go with proof not excuses. Colvin is more productive than Banta-Cain but thats not saying too much.
I have to concur with 'How they Scored.' Until we get our D-line up to par it won't matter who we have backing up the play.

Colvin
Colvin is a much better pass rusher than Briggs and would come much cheaper.  Those are two reasons to sign Colvin instead of Briggs.  In addition there is the question of how Briggs would fit into a 3-4 scheme and I think they're valid concerns.  In the end, I'll trust what Nolan and Co. decide for their defensive players, but trust me, it's much more complicated than:

Briggs > Colvin - SLAM DUNK BIATCHES!

We are not who I thought we were.

Briggs
PFT says we aren't interested in Briggs anymore.

NO BRIGGS DEAL IN SAN FRAN (YET)

Despite rampant rumors and speculation that the San Francisco 49ers already have a wink-nod deal in place with linebacker Lance Briggs, a source close to the situation tells us that the 49ers currently aren't even among the teams that are interested in his services.

Other teams are interested in Briggs, and we're told that there's actually a chance that he'll stay in Chicago.  But, as to Briggs, the pre-free agency tamper-fest that infects the league in late February has not included the Niners.

It could be that the 49ers backed off as a result of the tampering charges that the Bears filed in 2007 as a result of contract discussions between the Niners and Briggs' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, that allegedly occurred in connection with failed trade talks between the two teams.  If so, Chicago's apparent strategy -- i.e., file the charges in order to get San Fran to back off -- apparently worked.

But that hasn't kept other teams from making it known that they have an interest in the Tampa Two weakside specialist.  And it doesn't mean that the Niners won't swoop in once Briggs officially hits the market on Friday.

For now, though, the Niners aren't in the mix.

Calvin Pace
According to MM:
Word is the 49ers' quest to upgrade the defense has them focusing on two players: DE Justin Smith (Bengals) and OLB Calvin Pace (Cardinals). The 49ers are expected to make strong pushes for both players, with the hope they can sign at least one of them.

There are expected to be six or seven teams in the bidding for Pace. It'll take at least $14 million guaranteed to sign Pace, and the 49ers are willing to pay at least that price, a league source said.

Pace would seem like a good addition as a pass rushing LB who would be more versatile than just that.

We are not who I thought we were.

Pace
Pace probably interests me more that Smith just because I'm stuck thinking inside the 3-4 box.  Pace doesn't have much of a track record so he's a little riskier than Smith who has been pretty damn consistent throughout his career.

I read this on AOL Sports:

LB Lance Briggs. Like Samuel, Briggs shouldn't be available. But the Chicago Bears gave him the same deal the Patriots granted Samuel.

The Bears would love to retain Briggs. But they have already made a huge investment at the position (four-time All-Pro Brian Urlacher has four seasons remaining on a $56.6 million contract), and Briggs has persistently angled for a chance to test free agency. Linebackers aren't as coveted as cornerbacks or defensive ends. But Briggs is a cornerstone player, given his exceptional combination of size, speed and instincts.

There was a rumor at the combine that Briggs was going to get $35 million in guarantees from the 49ers. But that doesn't come as a huge shock since his agent is Drew Rosenhaus, someone who revels in playing "the game."

The 49ers, however, do make sense since Briggs was born in Sacramento and attended high school in Elk Grove, Calif.

The Niner rumors are all over the place.  We'd be lucky to sign 2 of the 3 from Smith, Briggs and Pace but damn if we hit on all three...<speechless>.

Here's to hoping Albert Hanyesworth stomps on Alex Smith's head.

OK
If we were to sign Smtih,Briggs, and Pace, then as long as Alex Smith does not suck it up for us, we have a really really good chance at the playoffs. Hell, just 2 of the 3 and we do.

What about the O?
Smith, Briggs, & Pace. That there is a pipe dream. This will never happen.

What about the offense?

Offense is overrated.

Offense is highly Overrated.
Smith and Pace...a hybrid D with an "Elephant" either Smith or uh er Smith? A dilemma I'd like to have hee hee.
And we have an offense...Gore is solid, Smith 'will' mature this year, our O-line is looking stable for the first time in years(I miss Bob McKittrick), having a real Offensive coordinator in Martz will help more than any free agent receiver we can hope to land. Why do you think that our D has been the focus the past 2 years? It was porous, malodorous, and dirty/undisciplined. Now with PWills, Clements, Spencer, Lawson, and Harris all we need is a solid guy like Smith to make us a ball control/in your face type of team.
Joe Montana and Jerry Rice are the best QB/WR tandem EVER!!!!!!R.I.P. Bill Walsh...you are missed and remembered fondly.

Our o-line is looking stable, uh er, wtf?
Did you watch the games last year? I am not sure how you can say the o-line is looking stable.

Granted this is the same group that did a solid job in 06'. However, they imploded last year. Allen got into it on the sideline with another lineman, Jonas went batty, and the others well they showed up, I'll give them that.

This line isn't complete trash. But to say it "is looking stable" is egregious and erroneous.

Also consider that Staley is making a switch this year? It will be interesting to see how he  responds. Then you got Larry Allen who might retire.

Where is the stability of which you speak?

Bring back the YAC!

by jfainsf49 on Feb 28, 2008 11:55 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Agreed
..the left side of the line is troubling. We will see what Allen does and what the niners will do with Jennings. I feel the draft is crucial to find a left or right tackle, which can determine the plans for Staley in 08
Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.
