Word on the Street

Well actually the word is from NFL Total Access. But anyhoo, word is that Kawika Mitchell is a free agent.

I know that some of you guys think help is needed elsewhere, like pretty much everywhere. But why not go after this guy?

The plus side. The guy is a championship caliber type player, but that is just my opinion and something I came up with after many hours of studying his game film. And he is a young guy, (actually he was born 5 days before I was).

Here are his stats from last season according to foxsports.com: 76 tckls, 4 scks, 2 ff, 1 int.

The down side. Screw the down side just sign this bastard before someone else does.

replacement?
Would Banta-Cain be coming off the bench at that point?  Or with Manny Lawson returning from injury would we have a 3-man rotation of outside linebackers to ease Lawson back in?

The Replacement: Derek Smith
Mitchell would probably play ILB if the Niners chose to sign him, I'm pretty sure he started out as an MLB when he was with the Chiefs.  I don't see any reason to get particularly excited about him.  Good addition, sure.  Impact player, hardly.

Darn you Braekneck
Once again you have taken all my glory. Wait I never had any glory to begin with. Uh oh, just a minute, my cell phone is ringing...

Ring, ring, ring, ring, ring...

Me: Who dis?(not really more like--Hello)
49Front Office: My I speak with jfainsf49?

Me: Who should I say is calling? (me playing it cool)
49erFO: You should say that Denise York is calling.

Me: Let me see if he is available. (addressing myself in the 3rd person)Mr. Fain do you have time to speak with some lady named Dork, I mean York. (again me playing it cool or dumb take your pick)Yes, Mrs. Dork, I mean Mrs. York, Mr. Fain speaking.
49erFO: Mr. Fain I have read your comments over at NN. After consulting with Mr. Dork, I mean, Mr. York, based on your extensive knowledge of the game, 49er tradition, philosophical insights and general pimpness, we have decided to offer you a position in the 49ers front office in whatever capacity you so choose.

Me: I appreciate your calling but I am in the middle of my Madden '08 game. Would you mind calling at a more convenient time?
49erFO: But Mr. Fain this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Don't you understand that?

Me: Of course I do beeeoootch, I'll check you out in the next lifetime. I'm out. Peace.

Click.

49erFO: Hello. Hello. I think he hung up on me. (barely audible)I wonder if Mike Martz is available....

Championship!
I was thinking more like replacing either Smith or Ulbrich with Mitchell. Mitchell is listed as a MLB on foxsports.com. I thought Smith and Ulbrich were both MLBs too.

Apparently I am lost on all of the NFL's nuances. I hear of a linebacker and just assume they can play any linebacker spot. I mean crapola, these guys are making a gazillon dollars you figure they could play or adapt to more than one position. (I realize that physical characteristics limit what some guys can and can't do though)

Back to Smith and U, I hate to say it but I think it's about time to put Smith out to pasture. As for Ulbrich, as much as I like his motor, I think his role should be on special teams(kinda like Bill Bates even though Bates was a DB but I think Ulbrich could fill that role if he could swallow some pride)with perhaps some spot relief at lb.

If it came down to rotating Banta-Cain, Lawson and Mithcell, I imagine the latter would be against coming here just to lose playing time. But as much time as the defense will likely spend on the field it would most certainly help to keep those guys fresh.

Obviously we need a minimum of 4 lbs plus at least 2(or 3) backups. So why not get Mitchell and or Suggs. Imagine that lb corp: Mitchell, Lawson, Willis and Suggs(in no particular order). One word. Championship.

I tell you, I got all the answers, it's amazing I'm not working in a front office somewhere! ;-)

LB Corp.
MitchellMoore, Lawson, Willis, Suggs.  Now that's a devastating LB corp.

(voice in my head) Step away from the argument
As to avoid losing another argument to you, I agree completely. I was just thinking that Mitchell might bring a little championship swagger along with him. And I have to imagine that playing along side Willis is going to make any linebacker much better except all of the current 49er linebackers of course, Lawson being the one exception.

How about Tedi Bruski?
He's got even more championship swagger.

um
how's Lance Briggs sound?

Just curious.

Content with Briggs
I would be content with Briggs. Then again I am easy to please when it ain't my money being spent.
I hear that Briggs has off the field issues. I don't know, something about bastard children. I am not quite sure if he would fit on this team. Character is I highly valued...ahhh...screw it. Most of them are scoundrels anyway. Sign that mofo quick.

umm...Not good.
Briggs doesn't fit the mold for any of the 3-4 LB positions very well.

Suggs over Briggs and Mitchell
I would rather take Suggs over the both of them. One Briggs has issues off the field, let us not forget the incident he had with his car and left the scene. He is a good player but not in our defensive scheme. Mitchell on the other hand I have to admit, I did see him in on alot of plays in the SB but I look at his style of play and see him more of a Ulbrich type of player surrounded by great talent and not a talent himself. Suggs is younger and more talented than both and at the OLB position he will give us some push off of the edge we missed after Manny went down.

Re. Suggs over Briggs and Mitchell
Yea, you make a good point about the talent on NY's defense. I had hopes of getting one of their d-lineman or maybe one of the three headed monster they got at rb. But I saw a list of free agents and it was pretty short. The list included a couple of no names, Ward(rb) and Mitchell, so I ran with Mitchell.

P.S. Sweet signature!

Suggs
NFL Total Access is reporting that Suggs will likely get slapped with the franchise tag.
Bring back the YAC!
