2008 Niners Nation Draft Prediction Contest

The 2008 NFL Draft is 10 days away and now seems as good a time as any to get the Draft Prediction Contest up and running. I'm creating this as a diary I'll promote to the front page for today. Then I'll move it back to the diaries so it stays up top as the thread for entering predictions.

It certainly won't be easy to get all of them accurate so we've developed some rules that should make things a little more interesting. The specific point totals aren't final, but here's what we're looking at, along with an example to make it clear:

For every correct player picked in the exact spot, you get 2 points - Pretty straight forward - You say the Bills take DeSean Jackson and they do, you get 2 points.
If you predict the correct position taken, you get 1 point - You say the 49ers will take Gosder Cherilus (OT, BC) and they take Jeff Otah (OT, Pitt), you get 1 point.
If you predict offense or defense correct, you get 1/2 point - You say the Texans will select a running back and they take an offensive lineman, you'll get 1/2 point.
If a team trades out of the first round completely, everyone loses out on the pick.
Obviously, you'll be predicting all 31 first round picks.

Now, if you make your predictions today and then next week decide you want to make a change, here's the process. You'll make your prediction in this specific thread. If you want to make a change, just reply to your specific comment with the changes. Do NOT add a new comment at the bottom as that will clutter things up.

This is kind of a work in progress, so if anybody has suggestions for improving this I'm all ears. Additionally, our boy HowTheyScored will be helping to keep score so everything should be on the up-and-up. Best of luck to all. For now the winner gets a front page post, but I'm trying to come up with something better. Keep your fingers crossed.

More emphasis on when the Position gets pick not who picks em or the player...

Since I know their will be teams trading in and out i’m predicting when a position/player will be picked first and team needs second. When it comes to CB/WRs I think the actual player is interchangeable though. Here goes nothin.

How do I deal with scoring here? Should I just assume the teams go with the picks in this order, or should I just ignore trades in this case and go strictly by player/position order?

I understand what your intention was

That’s why I had the question. Th eproblem for me is that the official scoring system we have is assuming that each player predicts per team. If I score certain mocks differently than others, it might create a competetive imbalance. On the other hand, nobody might care. For official scoring, I might be forced to assume that each pick is supposed to line up with the team that is slated to draft there. Your method has created a scoring quandry, and I was deferring to Fooch to see what his opinion was on whether I should either 1) compromise the intentions of your picks by forcing them to conform to the “official” (heavy quote/endquote) format, or 2) make a scoring exception (potentially compromising the integrity of the score) in order to maintain the integrity of your picks themselves.

I hope that makes sense.

Go ahead and make an exception. If there was a prize on the line beyond the front page post I’d be more inclined to stick closer to the letter of the law, but since this is more for fun than anything else I say let him go with the per player instead of forcing it into the scoring structure we created. This is definitely something we can improve upon next year.
