2008 NFL Draft: Day 2 Open Thread

Day 1 was a little more low key for the 49ers this year.  They snagged Kentwan Balmer, a guy who could conceivably be a nose tackle or a defensive end.  They also grabbed Chilo Rachal, a guy who looks to compete for one of the starting guard spots in training camp.

So now we arrive at Day 2 and the question is now, where do the 49ers go from here?  Balmer appears to be more of a run-stopper meant to open up spots for the linebacking crew, so maybe McNolan will be looking for a pass rusher on Day 2.  I'd see that as more of an outside linebacker than another defensive lineman.  Considering we'll see a defensive line of some combination of Justin Smith, Aubrayo Franklin, Isaac Sopoaga, Kentwan Balmer, Ray McDonald,. Ronnie Fields and Joe Cohen among others, I don't see another defensive lineman entering the fray.  Another offensive lineman would be useful, and possibly a wide receiver as well.  The 49ers have 4 picks remaining (3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th rounds), so hopefully they can make things happen with those picks.  One option is of course to move back in the 3rd or 4th round to pick up picks, but I honestly would rather just go best available with what we've got.  I'd still like to see them draft Lavelle Hawkins.  Consider him my 2008 Jay Moore.  Nonetheless I'll guess the 49ers go OT, WR, OLB, DB with their remaining 4 picks, although not necessarily in that order.

Round 3 gets underway 10am eastern time, 7am local time and considering it's now 1:20, there is no way in hell I'll be up for the start.  I've set my TiVo and there will certainly be plenty of coverage online.  If some of you East Coast Niners fans, and of course the West Coast early risers see who the 49ers grab in the 3rd round and can find some YouTube highlights or random links about the guy, feel free to put up a Fan Shot.  We've gotten a few up about Balmer and Rachal and the more the merrier.  See you in the am and let's hope for some big things with the 49ers.

First 2 okay

Is it just me or am I the only one that is okay with these 1st two picks? I mean yeah I wanted a go to receiver(manningham still available?) and yeah I wanted a backer to rush off the end(I’m sure LB’s are deep) but we needed a big nose tackle who we can mold and our OL is a little depleted(especially with Larry still up in the air). These are 2 picks that look like “what the hell” on paper but I wouldn’t be surprised if they both are starting by the middle of the season.

I see Coach Nolan and company drafting a LB next, then a WR next 2 rounds. They better not draft down to get more picks…pick the best and lets go

Reggie Smith @ #75

A pretty highly rated DB out of Oklahoma. I have no problem with that pick. I’m not clammoring for a WR like everyone else here.

So assuming we do want to go for a WR at the next pick

Who are the top prospects still left on the board? I think I’d rather go OL anyway…

Available WRs

You’ve got guys left like Mannignham, Caldwell, Keenan Burton, and of course the Hawk. But I’m with you, we need some pash rush. Avril perhaps?

Hopefully we can nab Avril

If Smith can’t play FS as the ignorant fan I’ll be very displeased.

OLB Options

What are we looking at? Darrell Roberston? Ezra Butler?

Or are we already set? Seems like the Niners are drafting like a 4-3 team.

Robertson seems like a good option. Maybe Johnson out of Wake Forest, seems pretty highly graded. Who knows, though, it’s a mystery to me at this point.

I'm conviced the Niners are looking to play a whole lot more 4-3

Between free agency and the draft their moves are all more indicative of a 4-3.

where is the pass rusher???

maybe you’re right about playing more 4-3. They have totally ignored our big need at LB.

and this is where

the loss of the 5th round pick stings the most. Our next pick would be coming up in a few minutes. We’ll see what players go around our pick.

damn stoolies!

I think...

Marcus Monk would be a good 6th round pick if he’s still on the board.. We clearly need some sort of down the field threat that’s able to stretch the field so the opposing team doesn’t just stack the box and pummel Gore. He had great numbers his first 3 years at Arkansas and his SR season was injury plagued and his stats dropped dramatically, I still think he could be a steal as a 6th round pick. I tend to like the bigger WR’s and Monk is almost 6’5/220lbs. If he can be as effective as I think he can be, the 49ers might have something resembling a passing offense this year between him, VD and Gore coming out of the backfield.

Stephen Jackson catches on the wing and faces up against Vujacic. When Jax looks down and sees Vujacic, his eyes light up. He pulls out his nine, screams "Thug Life" and empties the clip, then drives in for a basically uncontested layup.
