Larry Allen?
This may have already been discussed and I missed it but my buddy and I got into a debate the other day about whether or not Larry Allen was still playing for the Niners, I have gone to several different sites to look at the roster and I haven't seen him on any of them. Did he retire or is it a he'll show for minicamp? Does anyone know what the story with him is?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Re: Larry Allen
From what I’ve read at Barrows’ and Maiocco’s blogs, it’s certainly not set in stone that Allen is retired. Right now he’s technically an unrestricted free agent. He hasn’t officially filed his retirement paperwork, although according to MM, that is something procedurally related to the benefits process and it’s not unique among retiring players. Technically, Bryant Young hasn’t filed his retirement papers either but it sounds like he’s all set to retire anyways.

So then if he’s an unrestricted free agent, that pretty much seals that right now, whether or not he’s retired, he’s not with the team.

I believe he showed up late last year after training on his own, but this year the team doesn’t seem too concerned with his status. He’s supposed to be consulting with his family and stuff, but the team appears to have moved on.
If he isn’t already retired, I doubt there’s a place for him on the team anyway.

mentor
While the wheels might be finally coming off, don’t you think Allen could be one hell of a mentor to Chilo Rachal? It’d be like a Hall of Fame version of the Trent Dilfer-Alex Smith mentorship.

Yeah
Because Dilfer has done so much to raise Alex Smith’s game.
Believe me, if we disagree it is you that is wrong.

but i think the point is
Vintage High grad Larry Allen (gotta get that in there as often as possible!) is something we would like Chilo to aspire to. I dont think anyone ever wanted Alex to try to be like Dilfer (though now I might take it)

dilfer-smith
I was being a bit of a smart-ass with that one but obviously the internet does not convey that…Had to be there.

dilfer sucks!!
the only reason he got a ring was because of ray lewis and co. on defense…... I think the defense and special teams scored more than the offense in the playoffs and super bowl.
Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

Dilfer played his role
Dilfer was a quarterback who didnt put up big numbers but didnt make mistakes…..he was smart….the 9ers D is starting to stack up and is starting to look top tier as far as personell…..if the 9ers D starts to play like they look on paper….and if they can pound the ball and keep alex smiths role minimal they can be a contender…..so Dilfer didnt suck….he was a game manager and did a great job obviously…...

Allen Status
I am really intrigued by the strongman strength Larry Allen possesses, and the fact that Chilo Rachel is the “Poor Man’s Larry Allen” for the 49ers. What a potential devastating tandem! But will Allen take the field in 2008? And why not? Unless Allen knows he has little fuel left in his tank or because he is just ready to retire. The fact that there has been no announcement on his retirement shows that Allen is still mulling over it, I have a gut feeling that Allen is excited about the new additions to the 49ers team, along with the new offensive coordinator, so it is taking longer for him to decide, he may have family matters to deal with before he can deal with his status on the 49ers team.

The proverbial tank.
I think that Allen showed the world last year he doesn’t have a whole lot left in the tank. I think that even he knows this. So I would be surprised if he comes back at all, and even more so if he were to return to San Francisco as a starter.
I think Allen hasn’t announced his retirement because he’s treating the offseason like an offseason. After working out on his own last year, it wouldn’t surprise me if he were working out on his own again this year, and hardly even thinking about coming back. He knows the 49ers probably don’t view him as a starter anymore, and will not pay him starter money to ride the pine. Allen himself will probably not accept a pay cut, even in this late stage of his career.
I’m sure I’m not the only one that was surprised he actually made it through the second year of his deal.
