2008 Season Predictions

Now that we are well into the off-season, I want to know if everyone is just as hyped about this season as I am. I want you to respond by giving your predictions about the 49ers upcoming season schedule. I want to know which games you think we can win, can't win, post-season predictions, possible pro-bowl selections, etc.....etc....etc....

Week 1.  (Home opener vs. the Cards) Does everyone remember when last year were the 49ers were the "sexy pick" to have a breakout season? Now the 49ers are nowhere to be found on sportscenter....and the Cards, or the Seacocks are who they are predicting to win the NFC West. When will they ever learn not to pick the Cardinals, they fail year after year. The niners take this game in a hard fought defensive battle.( I have a feeling Martz' offense takes at least 3-5 weeks to really start clicking.) W-1 L-0

Week 2.  (@ Seattle) We've proven that we can beat the Seacocks even with a mediocre team. The Patrick Willis lead defense continues to gell and wins this game for us. But, just barely, as our offense is effective, but only in glimpses. W-2 L-0

Week 3.  ( vs. Detroit ) Martz' old team, therefore he can point out their flaws on defense, and exploit them. I think this will be a moderately fast-paced game with a fairly high score, as the etroit Lions have no D....Ha ha! Get it? etroit, no D.... Nevermind.  49ers stay undefeated. W-3 L-0

Week 4. ( @ New Orleans) I think this may be our first loss....I went to the Saints game at home last season and our D seemed to struggle against them. Too many big plays!! W-3 L-1

Week 5. ( vs. The Patriots ) I don't think the Pats will be nearly as good as they were last year, but I can't realistically see the Niners taking this one. We lose our first home game. W-3 L-2

Week 6. ( vs. The Eagles ) I plan on attending this game as my good friend is an Eagles fan(he's also goin')....so we better kick there asses for bragging rights sake. W-4 L-2

Week 7. (@ Giants ) Defending champs, outstanding pass-rush. I think it's a slow defensive, run-first game. Won by the Giants. W-4 L-3

Week 8. ( vs. Seattle ) Close game as always, but I say the Niners pull out another victory vs. Seattle to sweep the series. W-5 L-3

Week 9.  Bye

Week 10. ( @ Arizona ) Arizona takes it's revenge....still another close game. W-5 L-4

Week 11.  ( vs. St. Louis ) A really late first meeting with this division rival. I foresee the Rams continuing to struggle. We've always matched up well with them. Patrick Willis will put a ball-and-chain on Steven Jackson. Our offense really gets going too! W-6 L-4

Week 12. ( @ Dallas ) I'm soooooo excited to watch this game.....I realize the rivalry isn't necessarily what it once was, as all the players are all gone. But it's still in the heart of the fans!! I hate the Cowboys! Therefore the Niners take this one on the road and break the hearts of Dallas fans all over the globe!! W-7 L-4

Week 13. ( @ Buffalo ) No doubt a nearly sure-fire bet. Frisco takes it on the road. W-8 L-4

Week 14. ( vs. The Jets ) The Jets? In San Fran? Another victory! Possibly locking down a spot in the playoffs. W-9 L-4

Week 15. ( vs. The Fins ) Did anybody catch Miami's record last year? The team was acting like they won the Super Bowl when they won their first game late in the season. Win! Win! Win! W-10 L-4

Week 16. ( Final divisional match-up @ St. Louis ) I think the Rams actually might take this one. Another game won out of shear revenge. W-10 L-5

Week 17. ( Last game of the regular season vs. Washington ) The Niners take this one at home, gain momentum into the playoffs. W-11 L-5

Niners Pro-Bowl selections:

Frank Gore, Patrick Willis, Andy Lee, Nate Clements

Post-season predictions:

I love being an irrational fan....and love to think the Niners can win the Super Bowl every year.....if I didn't, I wouldn't be a true fan. Go Niners!!!

Will Use This

Bad-a—case of V.D.,

Like a itch, I will use your 2008 Season Predictions as a barometer, and I hope the Niners do go 11-5!

I agree with your pro bowl selections of Willis, Gore, Lee, and Clements but I suspect we will have one or two surprise additions to the NFC pro bowl roster. I wouldn’t be surprised of Isaac Bruce makes the pro bowl. Balmer might be the surprise addition to the pro bowl team if his high draft status is as good it is advertised.

Do you honestly think

that Kentwan Balmer will have the same impact that Willis had last year. For Balmer to make the pro bowl he would have to surpass the likes of Osi Umeniora (and the whole giants d-line for that matter), Julius Peppers, patrick kerney, and maybe even justin smith.

I’m all for optimism, bit can we at least be a little realistic?

+1

The 3-4 DE is exactly a stat friendly position either. But then again trying to use reason and/or logic in a discussion with 16to80endzone with undoubtedly prove futile.

Logic Always Wins

Method, it is by no means a futile attempt if you try to use reason or logic with me. You spend more time groaning than actually building a discussion into a more logical one.

I’d take Dr. Spock over you anytime. He doesn’t get into his soulish ways. He’s all logic.

Wait and See.

The season hasn’t started yet. It’s optimistic to say that Balmer will show his stuff, hopefully that merits a trip to the pro bowl.

Did anybody really know about how good Patrick Willis was before his rookie season started?

I’ll concede there was more hype on Willis before the season and he backed up all the hype as legit.

Was there any hype when Joe Montana first joined the 49ers?

Only Bill Walsh knew.

You really amaze me

you say that no one knew about willis before the season started, yet you say he lived up to the hype. Doesn’t having any hype at all mean that people knew how good he was going to be?

And don’t tell me you’re comparing balmer to super joe. I know someone as astute and scholarly as you would never say anything foolish like that.

Neutral in my middle name

Up until a couple years ago, I actually believed that the Niners would never lose a game.

Since then I have come to grips with the fact the Niners will loss and loss often, until their collective mindset makes a change for the better.

Don’t get me wrong, part of me wants to believe that they can win it all.

But first things first.

Can they play an entire game without screwing themselves out of a win?

I think of all the weapons that we have, and I start to get a little giddy.

We have a solid core of guys and several playmakers to boot.

But until we can win a game without stumbling bass ackwards into victory, I remain somewhat skeptical.

It’s hard for me to predict game-by-game outcomes. Things vary so much from year to year that it is difficult to know (at least for me) how each team stands in terms of talent and preparedness.

Having said all that, I will predict an 8-8 season.

hey

finally someone talking some sense! Nice post

According to the comminsioner of the nfl, 104 people retired last year. 7 due to age, and the rest because of Patrick Willis

9-7. No reason, I just see 9-7 as attainable.

Dude, it’s puff puff PASS. Never forget to pass or posts like this happen. Your rationale for the win against the Eagles is because you and a friend are going to the game. Your rationale for beating the Cowboys is you hate them.

I see us with 8 or 9 wins: sweep Arizona and St. Louis, split Seattle, beat Detroit, Jets, Fins. Maybe take one of Washington and Buffalo.

Okay, Okay....maybe I was a little optimistic

The purpose of this post wasn’t to be completely realistic…..matter of fact, most of the posts in the blog-o-sphere aren’t entirely realistic, as they are based on predictions and possibilities, so save it.

Besides, this is the NFL, where any team can win on any given Sunday. I agree that it’s been a while since the Niners actually marched down the field to a victory, rather than stumble into one. Why can’t this year be the year we start to do so?

I believe our defense can be even more cohesive this year, as most of our players have been in the system for at least a year. I think the addition of Justin Smith is going to really pay dividends, and he’s a vet who can pick up this D quickly.

Our O-line play should be significantly better too….with Staley in his more natural position on the left side, and chemistry among the lineman has been building too.

More weapons on offense….that will be used to the best of their ability with Martz at the helm, instead of Hostler, who played it pretty safe. I also think Martz is coaching our quarterbacks way better…stressing fundamentals, technique and footwork. He’ll have them much more prepared.

So maybe I was a little optimistic….but, whats really wrong with that.

Win the West!!! GO NINERS!

There’s nothing wrong with being optimistic. I was very optimistic heading into last season and I really hope you’re right about this season.

The Eagles

have a much better chance in winning their div than the 49ers do…...I’m not saying the 49ers cant or won’t improve this season but 11-5 is just ridiculous! Vernon Davis hasn’t shown he was worth a top 5 pick, alex smith is looking like a bust each game, and the niners could only muster 13 pts per game last season! Couple that with a not so great defense.

Like I said, an 8-8, 7-9 or 9-7 predictions wouldn’t be crazy….....but 11-5 into the playoffs?

The Eagles last year just failed to create turnovers on defense, and had problems in the red zone. Those two are much smaller holes than the niners have. If AJ feele didnt throw interceptions like it was a good thing we probably would’ve knocked off the Pats.

i dont have a prob w/ the ningers but i mean 11-5, 12-4 win predictions are just off the hook!

Any 9ers fans agree with me about Davis and Smith

by Joe_D on Jun 28, 2008 11:26 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Last year, Davis had a pretty good year with a terrible offense around him. If the offense takes a step forward, like most are expecting it to, he should have his “breakout” year.

Smith is still a question mark, it’s hard to judge him based on last year since he only played in 3 games when he was healthy. The year before he seemed to take a big step forward, so I personally have optimism.

But I think you just missed the entire point of the whole fanpost. Direct from the fanpost body:

I love being an irrational fan….and love to think the Niners can win the Super Bowl every year

It’s not necessarily about being realistic. It’s about being irrationally hyped about the home team.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

The Secret

So what if I’m irrationally hyped about the home team….hasn’t anyone read the secret? If we built a team with people of your “rational” mind-set, we would lose every game. Aren’t we trying to win every game, shouldn’t we believe we can? Why the Fuck not?! And honestly, if it’s about being let down because you had too high of expectations….well then your your just a pussy! Don’t you think thats the way Willis and Gore go into every game, thinking, they can come away with a victory. Honestly, if any player on the team doesn’t think this way, well then they can just get the fuck off the team. Even if the Niners completely let me down this year….thats not gonna stop me from believing in them. Call me crazy, but I think you’re the crazy ones.

by #1TE.BadCaseofV.D. on Jun 28, 2008 4:58 PM PDT   0 recs

Just in case there was confusion, I wasn’t criticizing you for being irrationally hyped about the team. I was trying to support that mindset. I agree with it. Part of the fun of being a sports fan is believing somewhere in your heart that this year’s team can DO it (unless you’re a 2008 SF Giants fan, in which case some part of you heart would have been crazy).

predictions for the 9ers in '08

Hey, I’ve been a 49er fan since people were throwing whisky bottles at the players walking through the southeast exit at Kezar. So I,ve seen a few ups and downs.
In 1981 I was coming down off the mountain above Navarro,CA with a load of firewood when I was able to pick up the Niner-Cowboys game on the radio and the Niners were kicking their butts. I stopped my truck on that spot so that I could hear the rest of the game (radio recption).
That was the end of my working on Sundays in the 1980s. I had a 13 inch TV(the only TV in or around Navarro) and my house was full every Sunday during football season for years.
Anyway, I’m so grateful for the memories of that decade watching the 49ers. I wish it never ended.
Please excuse my digressions. I think that 9-7 is more realistic for this year. The 49ers will surprize people . The defense is solid and Martz will improve the offense.
I don’t think the playoffs are in the cards but finally progress is being made.
And that’s cool!

by mikemccwolf on Jun 28, 2008 5:34 PM PDT   0 recs

Fa Sho!!

Some people on this blog don’t think this way, and honestly it’s more pathetic, in my opinion, than putting your self out there and risking the let down. Always believe!! 11-5 is attainable!

by #1TE.BadCaseofV.D. on Jun 28, 2008 5:36 PM PDT   0 recs

10-6

I think 10-6 for the 2008 season is a good prediction, defense will be shutting down offenses and the offense will experience some growing pains but score an average of 17-20 points a game. There will be two games scored over 40 points.

If it goes 11-5, it will be due to a couple of overtime tiebreakers.

16-0

With wide margins of victory.

by Rishi on Jun 30, 2008 12:43 AM PDT   0 recs

16-0 implies that we don’t make the playoffs.

Methinks you need to revise.

16-0 is just the regular season record.

The sixteenth win is earned with all of the starters resting, but winning the game anyway.

I say

our ceiling is realistically 9 wins.

Being Media-Savvy

Let’s say we are media-savvy and swallow their words that the 49ers will pathetically end up at 3-13.

I rather get paid and say the Niners would go 16-0, with Willis even tackling the Raider fans in the stands. Willis is gonna drag them.
