Correct me if I am wrong...

I did a little research.....and correct me if I am wrong. The Rams went 4-12 the year before they named Martz the offensive coordinator, which was in 98'? Then in 99' they made a huge leap to 13-3? WTF, this can't be right. I'm not sure about when he was hired, but the records came straight from nfl.com. Did he really make the greatest show on turf overnight?

If so, I hope Martz can produce the same magical turn around this year for the Niners.

Faulk

Martz’s first year as OC in 1999 (http://sf49ers.com/team/coaches_detail.php?PRKey=80) was more importantly, Marshall Faulk’s first season with the Rams. I’m sure Martz played a part in the greatest show on turf, but the addition of Faulk was probably more important.

Tony Banks

Let’s not forget the great Tony Banks! ‘98 was his last season in St. Louis too. I still remember watching him, thinking he never went through any progressions. He always seemed to lock onto one receiver and throw an incomplete pass or interception.

I miss Tony Banks being a Ram. He was the best!

The Detroit Case Study

Fooch, as you say the addition of Faulk was probably more important, that can prove that in Detroit, the chemistry and the abilities of the team wasn’t good enough to make the Martz offense a successful one there. That is why Martz envisions the 49ers doing much better with a more solid cast of players.

It’s like a movie. I rarely rent movies if the casting are unknowns, I go with the superstars, if the casting is great, Ebert and Roeper are likely to give two thumbs up!

In regards to the 49ers I think they are a good fit for the Martz offense. The only issue at hand is who the 49ers will name as starting quarterback, and will that quarterback be successful or be the one that gives the Niners’ the best chance to win?

As I always stress that the best 11 players are responsible cohesively as an unit to execute, it does fall on the quarterback to bring leadership to the huddle.

Lighten up Coach

I remember seeing a show that analyzed the ‘99 Rams Super Bowl team.

And what I gleened from the show was that Dick Vermeil was a hard ass prior to that ‘99 season. Apparently he saw the error of his ways and decided to lighten up for one reason or another.

That, I think, played a larger role in their success, than did the hiring of Martz.

I would also offer this as an example of how significant it can be when one chooses to lighten up.

Just look at the NY Giants last year. Tom Coughlin, at least ostensibly, was a hard ass.
He choose to lighten up, or at least that was what was reported, and viola, Super Bowl.

So, in closing, it was more than Martz that turned the Rams around.

Did he have something to do with it? Sure.

But all of it? No.

Here is to hoping that Nolan will lighten up. Wink. Wink.

Good day.

Thanks!

Thanks for clearing some things up for me….and as far as Coach lightening up, I get the feeling he has lightened up a bit. I think it was necessary the past few years in order to weed out some of the bad characters on our team. I think the team in general is a bit more disciplined than when he first got here and hopefully that equates into lightening up.

Martz does have Shaun Hill ...

... haven’t you already heard all the comparisons of how he’s got the same playing style and skills as Bulger did?
