49ers Uniforms: Change is afoot

Maiocco and Barrows have discussed a potential uniform change by the 49ers for some time now, and Barrows came out with a few more details today.  It sounds like any uniform change would probably not be in place until 2010 because of the administrative requirements.  In the meantime, the 49ers will apparently be holding some focus groups during the public sessions of training camp to consider various options.

I opened up this post in part because of a comment Barrows made in his post:

And while a lot of fans (and me) are in favor of returning to the Ronnie Lott-, Joe Montana-era cherry red duds, there's no guarantee that will happen. When I've spoken with Jed York on the matter in the past, he's said that previous focus groups have been split 50-50 between the old duds and the current ones. This seems like one of those red state-blue state, tastes great-less filling, Alex Smith-Shaun Hill type matters.

So I've decided to open up a poll to see what you all think.  Jed York says it's been 50/50, but I don't think I know anybody who prefers the current unis.  I don't dislike the current uniforms, but those throwback cherry reds are pretty sweet.  I'll open a 3rd option as well for those of you who might prefer something different and want to get a little creative.

80's Throwbacks Era

We’ve had many years of current uniform wear, it’s simply time to revert back to the 80’s throwbacks. It would inspire the players.

If I was a coach telling the players who are wearing the 80’s Throwbacks, I would tell them:

“Hey Fellas! Youse are wearing the 80’s Throwbacks, that is what Joe Montana and Dwight Clark wore, that’s what Ronnie Lott wore headbutting opposing players flat into the ground, that is what Cornerback Wright wore intercepting passes! Don’t embarrass yourselves in your 80’s Throwbacks! Play your heart out!”

HOW THE FUCK...

would wearing an old shirt inspire players to play their hearts out??! Are Montana, Lott, and Rice going to be in the huddle with them? Honestly where do you get this shit from because its really starting to piss me off.

when will the Kenny Thomas Reign of Terror end?!!??

Disagreement is fine, but can you do it in a way that is not degrading, insulting, or littered with foul language? Respect goes a long way.

I don’t know. I can’t believe it would even be a question. The throwbacks are better by far.

I wouldn’t mind doing something like the NY Giants have, a nice classic feel with a few modern design elements thrown in there for good meaure.

naw

I say straight throwbacks….facemasks and all.

Hybrid

I don’t think the NFL would go for the 49ers completely bringing back the old. The “new” uniform scheme of 2010 (or whenever) will more than likely be some hybrid of the new (read: current) uniforms and the throwbacks from the 80s.

Hybrid or Authentically Throwbacks

Either the Hybrid that stays true to the 80’s Throwback style or the original 80’s Throwbacks would do fine for me…

why does everyone want to live in the past?

I like the current unis but I’m always up for a change. I like the throwbacks but only once or twice a year. The only team that should go back to their throwbacks permanently is the chargers.

Living in the Past? Are you a...

True 49er fan or a ‘fan” of the 49ers not particular to the 80’s? I have been a fan of the Niners since I was a little boy and I have rooted for them, laughed and cried with them, and I certainly remember them playing in those 80’s Throwback uniforms.

I have been waiting so long for the 49ers to get back into the 80’s championship ways. Maybe wearing the 80’s Throwback uniforms will offer some sort of inspiration to all of us.

First of all...

don’t ever try to question whether I’m a 49er fan or not. I was born in 1990 and I have never seen a Super Bowl (as I was only four years old when we won in 94), but I am a die hard Niners fan, and having been through more downs then ups over my time is a true testament to my loyalty towards the team.

I’m proud to be a fan of the best franchise in NFL history and I don’t hate or dislike the unis from the 80s in any way, but for you to say that wearing the old school jerseys would be an inspiration to this team and would make them play better is completely absurd and, quite frankly, childish. Simply putting on a uniform shouldn’t give one inspiration to try their hardest and play their hearts out. Being in the league and playing for the die hard fans like us is inspiration for the players (not to mention their own competitive natures and their fat contracts that they play for).

Whether or not I like the throwback jerseys is not an adequate way to judge my loyalty or true “fanhood.” So the next time you decide to say something stupid like that, think about what you’re saying and maybe you’ll come up with a better solution (like not saying stupid things at all).

whoa, whoa, whoa

I think he was just saying “If you’d been there you would know.” In other words if you witnessed the greatness of the glory years you would know why some of us practically worship the throwbacks.
.... But the point is they just flat out look better, so if you simply disagree with that I’ll question your style or judgement , but not your fanhood. Try not to take a little criticism so personally, I dont think he meant any disrespect. Lets save the insult hurling for the coming QB controversey not waste it on uni’s.

just like the warriors should go back to the jerseys from the runTMC days, but still sport “the City” ones a couple times a year.

Exactly. The old uniforms aren’t good because they’re old. They’re good because they’re good.

uniform changes

I am sick and tired of the goddamned Yorks. If I read correctly Jed York says that his poll is 50-50 against returning to the glory years uniform colors. I just really wish the whole York family could be rode out of town never to return.

by mikemccwolf on Jun 10, 2008 8:54 PM PDT reply actions

Eh.

I don’t think the Yorks are that bad. They’ve done a very good job of staying out of the football side of things since they hired Nolan. They’ve done a very good job in bringing the stadium issue back to the top of the heap. So yeah, I think they’re doing fine. I think I’d rather have them here than some billionaire that wants to just buy a team so that he can say “I own a franchise.”
