49ers waive Melvin Oliver
Well, for those of you who voted NO in this poll, you were right. The 49ers waived Melvin Oliver today, putting them at the 81 player limit. Maiocco said that:
Team officials felt there was good enough depth at defensive end to make this move with Justin Smith, Isaac Sopoaga, Kentwan Balmer, Ray McDonald, Walter Curry, Atiyyah Ellison, LaJuan Ramsey and Louis Holmes on the roster.
In our last 53-man roster projection, Oliver, Curry, Ellison, Ramsey and Holmes were guys I left off, although I definitely think Holmes has a shot at making the practice squad.
The only surprising thing about this move is that it happened so early. I thought Oliver would get a shot at making the roster, but clearly the 49ers don't feel that way.

Early
It is indeed very early. I thought they’d cut a guy like Ellison (or the likes) before they cut someone they actually drafted to fill up space. I guess the 49ers really felt he didn’t fit the scheme, and wanted to released him early so he had a chance to latch on somewhere else.
I think it’s kind of neat of the 49ers to keep him around until he was healthy enough to play again, essentially paying for all his rehab. Is this a requirement for any team? Or were the 49ers just being good to their (ex-)players?

Future NT?
With this recent move by the Niners and the issues the titans are having to sign Haynesworth to a long term deal, if available next year, should the niners pursue another free agent signing along the Dline?
Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

RE: Future NT
It’s a little early to start talking about next year’s free agents. We don’t know how Balmer is going to develop and hell, we don’t even know if the NT position is going to be a part of the defense next season.
