Mike Martz - 49ers Becoming Offensive Power?
It is unquestionable that the 1999 Rams were better than their counterparts in 1998 - they have the rings and the Lombardi trophy to prove it.
Mike Martz then followed up that success as an offensive coordinator in Detroit, making the Lions offense better for the two years that he was with them.
Mike Martz will be an asset to the Niners, but is he the best offensive coordinator of the recent NFL or just a beneficiary of coincidence?

Norv Turner?
I didn’t see any mention of Norv Turner. He did good things here in 2006 and obviously did so much for Troy Aikman and those early 90s Cowboy teams.

Cam Cameron
I think Cam Cameron is a pretty good offensive coordinator. He may not be AS good as Martz, but he’s definitely up there somewhere. Of course he had the benefit of Tomlinson, but Martz has had the benefit of Faulk before, as well. I think Cameron may have been, at least partially, responsible for the revival of Drew Brees’ career.

Saunders?
Martz is a good coordinator but I don’t think he’s anywhere near being the best in the NFL.

Turner, Cameron, Martz all in one...
would be a ideal packaged offense. The offense would….
just roll and roll.

martz.. going going gone
the sad thing is if mike martz succeeds, their is instant pressure for him to become a head coach again.. and i believe he is a great offensive coordinator, but i never really liked him as a head coach.. he was given that rams team, so i cant credit him with that but i will credit him with what he has done since and he was garbage… so if he succeeds he gets a huge deal from another team and goes away and we are in the same place again… once again ownership and managment has already put themselves in a bad spot..

Martz vs Turner
I think that Martz’s situation will be different than Turner’s. Nolan is currently on the rocks, and if the team succeeds because of Martz, the team may actually opt to terminate Nolan’s contract in favor of promoting Martz. The defense seems to be run okay with Manusky calling the plays (I don’t know to what extent Nolan and Singletary have in coaching other than individual drills), so the front office (i.e. McCloughan) could possibly feel that Martz is more vital to the 49ers’ future success than Nolan is.
