Johnny's Top Ten List: 49er Alumni, Past and Present
Here is a Top Ten series I am starting, where I began with the first Top Ten post on players for 2008, now this Top Ten list will cover the 49ers all-time players from any era, the past and the present, including the current 2008 players. Just make sure don't clog up your Top Ten with all 2008 players on the roster, because we did that already.
Some of you were born between the 40's and 90's. It will make it easy for us to discern which era you watched the 49ers from, from your choices of the Top 10.
I think my list covers the eras of the 80's to the 00's. You will see my statements why I chose them in like fashion the other fans commented in the first post!
Here it goes, hands clasping, with peering eyes looking at the flashbacks when the impeccable two-minute drives were conducted as if the red carpet was being rolled to the end zone, with the running backs high-stepping over facemasks, the wide receivers gliding their way in sheer separation from the befuddled secondaries!
You might be surprised on a couple choices and ask why?? And ask if I had a drink, losing my sense of judgement? But my guess is that you won't be surprised.
And no, I didn't have a drink, I only drink gatorade everyday, and here it goes:
Johnny's Top 10 49er Alumni:
1. Joe Montana- He had an uncanny knack for marching his team downfield hitting his spots in just under two minutes, with his running backs slithering their way into good field position, and Joe Cool delivering. It was better than the Federal Express. Joe Cool set the standard as the 49ers became a dynasty.
2. Y.A. Tittle- He is a 49er legendary quarterback, I always identified with his name growing up, his name was always in my subconscious as I cheered the 49ers year after year. He's one reason why John Brodie became a great quarterback, too. Tittle and Brodie were the 49er idols of the 50's.
3. Ronnie Lott- Yes, Ronnie Lott! I mean, if he headbutted me, I would have been imprinted on a tree for sure, or became a fossil where a group of kids pretending to be the 49ers would find me in the grass somewhere....He gave the most jarring hits in the NFL, and I can't think of a day when I thought Lott was timid in his play. He was one of the most feared players, and the most respected, too.
4. Freddie Solomon- Yes, the #88 Wide Receiver, he was one of the most gravity-defying receivers I've seen, keeping his feet in-bounds on his catches. If it was just a, let's say, a J.J. Stokes, the catches would fall out of bounds. Not Solomon. Oh, how sweet my memories are, I can still see Solomon's footprints on the goal lines, where you can see it square on the white chalked line.
5. Roger Craig, Ricky Watters, Garrison Hearst, and Frank Gore- Damn it, it's a 4-way tie between all these running backs. Forgive me for spoiling the Top 10 list. Maybe you can vote on a tie-breaker and choose the #5 all-time player. If I had to choose, I'd probably take Roger Craig over Frank Gore, because of the way he high-steps when he runs, I have seen Craig in person at the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, and man, I love the way he struts, as if he had a cape and an invisible cane, all sore and fooling everyone, then getting back on the field the next day dragging facemasks. Who can beat that? Nearly 18 years into his retirement, he still runs. Long distance. He is still in shape and if he wanted to, he could don a helmet and pads and high-step right back into the good ole' game. Honorary mention: Tom Rathman, and Dexter Carter.
6. John Taylor- His name is also John, like my name, and he was so smooth when he ran, he was a great option besides the other greats. He complemented the offense beautifully as one who came through in a very timely manner, he changed the game when he got thrown the ball. BOOM-BOOM was Rice and Taylor.
7. Brent Jones- I loved his style of TE play. Vernon Davis might be a spectacular physical specimen, but Jones delivered. Simply. I have seen Jones somersault after being hit on catches, it was a wonder to watch. And he held on to the ball. Gotta give him the Purple Heart, only it was in the NFL, not in the Marines.
8. Steve Young- Whew, am I glad number 10 didn't expire yet, we're still at #8. He had such a relaxed demeanor before games, as I have seen him play, but when he is in the huddle, he was almost the freak; opposing defenses weren't sure if he was going to scramble (run), or throw dead-on accurately. Either way, he was going to do some damage, and his passer ratings lead the NFL several years. I was disappointed when he had to retire because of the concussions. Life moves on. But who forgets Steve Young, besides Joe Montana? Young was one of the missing pieces of the puzzle in adding another Super Bowl for the 49ers.
9. Jesse Sapolu- Time for the Polynesian dance! I still dream of Sapolu and Sopoaga on the same field together doing the Polynesian chants. A wishful thinker, ain't I? He was a Hawaiian resident like I was, and was a lifelong 49er without defecting to any other team. Pau!
10. Jerry Rice- In the Bible, the first shall be last. And the last shall be first. And who else, but the best Wide Receiver in NFL history, Jerry Rice? Dennis Green, a former 49er coach, called Rice the "best route runner I've ever seen." And he had a poodle haircut early on in his career that was hilariously groovy.
Damn, every Top 10 choice I named was an offensive player. I am too biased for offensive players to even name any of the great all-time defensive players except for Lott.
Look for my Top Ten Defensive players, coming soon! And what you think, Lott's name will be on it also.
BAMM-BAMM just like Patrick Willis.

method?
Are they ranked in order of favorites, meaning Montana is your favorite and Rice is your 10th favorite? Or is it just the 10 guys you like the most, not in order of preference?

Both
It’s both the 10 guys I like the most and in the order of preference. Let me re-state my comments on #10 Jerry Rice:
“In the Bible, the first shall be last. And the last shall be first. And who else, but the best Wide Receiver in NFL history, Jerry Rice?”
In the Bible, the order of preference according to God is, first shall be last, and last shall be first. God is not partial to any man. I kind of put a biblical twist on putting Jerry Rice at no. 10 but he is really first, and like wise for Montana, he is also my first choice. Honestly, with all ten top choices, it’s virtually a tie between two players at each number, but that would make my Top 10 list look messy, right? Look at no. 5 where I kind of got stuck between my choices.
Really, anybody can list their Top 10 favorite all-time players in order of preference or just simply list their Top 10 all-time favorite players, as long they make it clear.
Sorry I didn’t make that clear.

Top 10
1. Steve Young—I loved his ability to just make something happen. Plus we are both southpaws.
2. Jerry Rice—“Rice-A-Roni” The San Francisco Treat. The guy could catch the rock with his teeth. He could outrun a cheetah with a rocket booster up its arse. He could juke a jukebox. He could…ah nevermind…you get the point.
3. Franklin Gore—This guy is a pleasure to watch. Now develope some trust on this team so he can be what he is capable.
4. Patrick Willis—I just don’t want to get tackled. Oh yeah, did you guys hear that they are adding Willis’ likeness to Mount Rushmore, and they are changing the name to Mount Tacklemore…bwahwahwah (as the NN readers groan in unison).
5. Brent Jones—This dude was the dude of all dudes. Plus he represented all us lanky white boys out there.
6. Tom Rathman—I loved the way he sacrificed his body, especially on those plays where he would wrap the rock tight with both hands to secure it, all the while his body taking the blows from would be tacklers.
7. Merton Hanks—I’m always down for a little “Hanky-Panky”...wink…wink…as long as she’s cute, and nice, and sweet, but I digress.
8. Gary Plummer—As someone else once said, “Fear the Mustache.” I will never forget that goaline stop against Buffalo eons ago. Plus, he was the guy who actually took the monkey off Steve’s back. He was the man…boomshakalaka…
9. Ken Norton Jr.—Even though he was a Cowboys defector, I can forgive. Plus, I love how he used to punch on the goalpost to honor his pops, that was great…a tear.
10. Ricky Watters— Somewhere the Watter is running. The guy was an absolute pleasure to watch, if not for Gore’s toughness, Watters my just be my alltime fav running back, sorry Roger.
By the way 16to80endzone, I like your style.
Good day.

jfainsf49's Top 10
Your style is captivating, too..Rice-A-Roni, you got it first, too many poodle dogs were stuffed into my mind, I couldn’t have thought of that! FRANKLIN Gore? As in Benjamin Franklin, a revolution figure? Congrats for naming Patrick Willis. If he continues what he did last year into 2008, I will revise my list in 2009 and add Bamm-Bamm Willis. Yeah, Brent Jones was the dude, man. Glad both Montana and Young threw him the ball. And oh as for Hanky-Panky, in referral to Merton Hanks and the rest of the NFL, that’s why all rookies have to attend a seminar about life in the NFL. Or Hanky-Panky would be the pet project of the NFL, on or off the field. Hey! I remember the goal line stop against Buffalo by Plummer!! I am so surprised someone finally mentioned it, or remembered. I have to give you 5 stars for that. Ken Norton, Jr was a great player! He wish he was still on the 49ers roster as an age-less defensive back, and he might just fall over Patrick Willis’ legs and break his leg like he did Bryant Young’s. Remember that? (groaning)...Ricky Watters is a star, he just yapped so much..I went to the Pro Bowl in the early-mid 90’s and witnessed Watters arguing with his father right in front of the Pro Bowl crowd..but he scored 5 touchdowns in one game, so he can do anything he wants..

Thanks...and lol...
About Frank Gore, according to this, his first name is Franklin.
I didn’t realize Norton was responsible for breaking BY’s leg…That’s it, I am ordering a hit on Norton…Hey, Moose, Bruno, (me giving a thumbs down gesture and pointing at a picture of Norton Jr.).
As for Ricky Watters, that’s too bad…I didn’t realize that…but of course I was speaking of on the field performance…living half way across the country, it’s virtually impossible to know what these guys are like off the field…not so much these days with the internet and all…but back then it was even harder to know who they really are
And thanks for the five stars, if I add those to my other stars, well, now I have five stars…

LMAO spgphil!!!!
You are totally outrageous with this list of Top 10!! I do remember Tim Rattay to J.J. Stokes but…..(all choked up)...
Druckenmiller? All I know he could fire missles and misfire them, too.
Giovanni Carmazzi, a local! and a buried local!
You mean Kwame, or Not-Kwame? I’d take the Not-Kwame.
Stenstrom, how many lovers did he leave behind at Stanford?
Owen Pochman? I don’t dare research him. I don’t know who he is or wanna know..
Nehemiah!!!!! I almost totally forgot about that pure speedster? For the record, I think he is a wee bit faster than Jason Hill. Add him.
Langham?? Almost forgot him, unless this is a fic-titty-ious name. I am losing my memory…
Gotta fo see the doctor first thing in the morning.

That should work. I don’t know why it wouldn’t. Maybe you’re accidentally typing in the lower, default comment box instead of the reply comment box that appears when you hit reply? It doesn’t sound like that’s it, but I can’t think of anything else.

Johnny's Top 10
Why not add Terry Kirby, Charlie Garner, and Kevan Barlow to #5?? How ‘bout Watters’ replacement Derek Loville?? Seriously though, Harris Barton, Guy McIntyre, Randy Cross, and Steve Wallace should be included with Jesse at #9. The entire O-Line gave awesome protection to two Hall of Fame quarterbacks. How ‘bout some love to the special teams? Best kicker: Ray Wersching, Mike Cofer, Wade Richey, Doug Brien, Jeff Wilkins, Joe Nedney?? Best punter….......Reggie Roby….....
