First off, you just have to love the preseason for the simple fact that the 49ers are a 2 point favorite against the Packers. I'd imagine some of that has to do with Ryan Grant likely out of the game. Well and Brett Favre moving on I suppose.
J.T. O'Sullivan will be getting most if not all of the first half snaps, so he's in a good position to take serious control of this QB competition. Alex Smith will get his snaps with the 2nd string offense and hopefully he can keep his head in the game.
Aside from the mess that is the QB competition, I'm wildly intrigued by Josh Morgan's matchup this evening. Tonight could go a long way in building confidence in the rookie.
Additional Players to Watch
Cam Colvin & Dominique Zeigler - possibly battling for a practice squad spot
Louis Holmes - I still think he's a longshot for the 53-man roster, but if he can make some plays tonight that could change
Joe Staley - Struggled a bit in his LT debut, so hopefully he'll show some improvement tonight
Takeo Spikes & Jeff Ulbrich - Spikes makes his debut with the 49ers, while Ulbrich is looking to open some more eyes and retain playing time
The defensive front 7 - A little pass rush would be nice fellas.

McDonald
He definitely struggles with the offsides, but he really likes getting that jump.

so far...
Gore looking fine, the passing game not so much. However, one thing I like seeing is using Vernon Davis on 3rd and really short. If you’re not going to run I really think he’s the guy they should throw to with the quick dump off. He’s got some moves and power to get that couple of yards for the first down easily.

Rossum
Not a big gain there, but certainly some nice moves….and just as it goes to commercial I hear another penalty…Waaaay too many penalties so far.

otherwise....
We’d really be in bad shape.

Spikes
Not sure if he blew the coverage against Lee, but he had some good coverage a couple plays later. The defense is either getting pressure or the secondary is doing enough to force Rodgers to throw it away. That’s so key.

smith
Is smith warming up yet?

preseason
I wonder how much is him figuring it’s the preseason so let’s try some new moves? Think he’ll be a little more careful once the season starts?

3rd and 2
Either run with Foster or quick dump off to Vernon Davis.

Compared to last week
Got PAST the marker this week. Of course he only had to go a few yards compared to the 10 or 11 he needed last week.

not quite!
Barely got in but Foster made that touchdown happen.

I thought Nolan would call for a FG for sure lol
If it was the regular season, you can bet he would have
touchdown
That was all Foster.

true
But on that drive the passing game made the plays to set it up.

I don't want to be debbie downer
but O’sullivan’s throws were weak. He had all day to throw, and had zero zip, even on the long passes. Those were not that great of throws…

throw
At first i thought he’d wildly overthrown it, but that was absolutely perfect.

O'Sullivan
One thing I’ve really liked is how he steps up in the pocket. The offensive line formed the wall to his sides and instead of running back and to one side (as Smith has tended to do), O’Sullivan steps up in the pocket and into his throw.

I bet he's still cheesed over being passed over
for AS, although, methinks he should be glad based on the OC situation, no line, etc. . .
For WilltheThrill, this is Jon Miller saying goodnight. . . .

I have to say, bondslegend has dominated this thread.
Trent Kline: Decentish. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com and on it I make jokes about things.
ppl
isn’t just me or does all of our QB passing percentage hella low. below 50 percent……

my thoughts on the game
I watched a recording, so I couldn’t join y’all (bondslegend and co) during the game, but obviously, I liked Morgan A LOT. I wouldn’t think he was a rookie. Jason Hill did a nice job, too. JT was pretty decent after that pick to Woodson.
On defense, I though Goldson was all over the place and did quite well. I’ll have to watch the replay again to be more specific, but the O and D lines were pretty good. Also, nice to see outside pressure on the QB. We haven’t done that in a long time.

I also love Eric Davis’s hair.

+1 on Davis' hair lol
he was quite good, I must say.
I still like Smith over O’Sullivan, because he has 0 turnovers and JT has 3. Smith is young and can get better, JT is 28 and has been around for 6 years.

at least we got a td
it would have been nice to score a TD last week, but we got a few tonight….
oh yeah
Great game!!!
and you accidentally put “Raiders Coverage” instead of “Packers Coverage”. It happens to me all the time… good stuff today though!
