Our long national nightmare is over: Brett Favre has been traded to the New York Jets

I previously mentioned I wanted to avoid Brett Favre chatter, and in fact I've avoided Sportscenter and NFL Live for much of the last week.  However, this is the one story I'm willing to happily report.  The Packers have traded Brett Favre to the New York Jets for what appears to be a fourth round draft pick that can increase in value depending on how the Jets perform.  While the Patriots are obviously still the favorites in the AFC East, if Favre can play like he did last season (no guarantees of that), the Jets could become a playoff contender.

The main reason I'm posting about this is because this will end the chatter about Favre potentially coming to the 49ers (and apparently now Jeff Garcia as well) or at least people wanting him to come to the 49ers.  I noticed the Chad Pennington diary just now and I'll just say, no way in hell right now.  I like Chad Pennington, but he is certainly not the answer.

Thankfully we can go back to enjoying our own boring little QB competition.  Praise the lord, although I certainly wonder how much additional coverage this will mean on Sportscenter.

I don’t think “enjoying” is quite the way I’d describe observing the 49ers’ quarterback competition. That would require good quarterbacks…

If I was a cynical man, I’d reply to this by saying “or a sense of humor.”

I actually think the QB “race” is going to be interesting this year. At best, we find out that we have a player to lok forward to for a long time. At worst, we figure out we have a bunch of crap on the roster. And then there’s not really a lot of middle ground. Each of these guys is in a “Put up or get replaced next year” situation. No such thing as “give the guy another year to figure it out” for the 49ers in 2008. That kind of decisive atmosphere is kind of exciting.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

Well

there will be more Favre coverage… from his trip to NYC, his first practice, his breakfast, his learning of the playbook, his fashion and pretty much anything. NY will make it more a hassle than anything else

BRING IN PENNINGTON!

I know I know…not much of an improvement, BUT think about it…

He has the one thing that our QBs don’t have – playoff experience.

Besides, it can’t get worse than what we’re at already….

We still believe!!
