2009 QB

Ok so its a little bit knee jerk to completely give up on this season after one game, buuut...  It does look very unlikely that Nolan or Smith will be back with the team and as mentioned in another post Martz and JT are both likely to leave whether they perform well or poorly.  It seems the team will probably have a dramatically new look one year from now?  So who should be the team's starting QB?

The candidates-

Category 1-guys we already have-JT has played only one game and minus all the fumbles he didnt look too terrible, but he has limited upside and who knows if he could have any form of success without Martz.  Shaun Hill seems to be a bit of the same story, he's looked good in limited action but has very limited upside, and serious questions linger about his ability to throw beyond 10 yards.  The case can easily be made that Smith hasnt gotten a fair shake in his time here (4 coordinators, no talent, thrust into a bad situation,  Nolan hates him, blah, blah, blah, we all know the story)

Category 2-young vets from another team-Brady Quinn is too pricey to remain a backup for much longer so another good year from Anderson could force the Browns to start talking trade.  John Beck seems to be the odd man out in Miami already.  With Arizona looking like the early favorites for the NFC West its easy to envision Leinart growing unhappy as he slips farther and farther away from the starting job.  Who knows, maybe Vince Young decides the Titans or Jeff Fischer are the problem and what he really needs is a fresh start.  Most of these are unlikely scenarios but its looks like there will be at least one or two young QBs on the trade/FA market this offseason.  I dont really know what older vets will be available on the FA market (I think Kyle Boller?) and doubt the niners would decide to go that route anyway.

Category 3-the draft-Its way too early to even begin speculating on specific names  (not that its not too early to begin this entire conversation anyway)  and drafting QB's hasnt gone so well for this organization lately.

Category 4-Convicts-Mike Vick-yea its a joke.....sort of.  Its about as likely as my last post idea:Usain Bolt at wideout.  I know Vick is very unlikely to play next year, but he is set to be released in July at the latest and Goodell did show a little lieniency to PacMan.  Vick grew up a Niner fan and worked with Steve Young a little early in his career.  Hey, crazier things have happened.

Combo

I would pick up a young vet to be the “caretaker” of the position. Specifically, I have Chris Simms in my head. (Yeah… I know… the thought of Phil Simms’ kid playing for the Niners kind of turns my stomach too.) He hasn’t proven to be a great QB, but he has been effective and the kid played an entire half with a ruptured spleen! He has a certain toughness about him that I can get on board with.

This wouldn’t be the long term solution in my head, I would immediately start looking to the future with QBs. Matt Painter from Purdue has a strong arm and is already garnering comparisons to Jay Cutler. If we decide we don’t like him or anyone else this year, wait for next year. Let that young QB take the Brady Quinn (don’t know how that’s going to work out yet) or Phillip Rivers (successfully achieved) route to the starting job.

This could net us a good problem in a couple of years where we have our very own “Drew Brees” that is having a stellar year, but we’re already committed to a guy that is going to be equally as good for the long term.

In the end, the Niners as they stand are a mess that will not be corrected over night. What the franchise needs is vision and a consistent approach.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

not to be a smart alec, but......

Curtis Painter is the QB at Purdue. He is one of three Qbs I would like to see SF look at in the 09 draft.
Curtis Painter Purdue
Riley Skinner Wake Forest
Chase Daniels Mizzou

My mistake

Just add this to the number of times I wish the Sports Nation blogs had an edit button!

JMO, which isn't worth much

I could live with Painter being looked at, but Skinner and Daniel are not NFL starter material. Chase is too small and runs a shotgun spread offense and we’ve seen how well that translates for us (ahem, Alex Smith). Skinner I’m just not sold on, at least yet.

I would prefer we draft a QB and groom him, but right now there just aren’t a lot of good looking QBs in this upcoming draft. They almost all have MAJOR flaws unless a couple of underclassmen come out (Mark Sanchez, etc).

I've been on the Vick bandwagon since he went to prison

I’m sure he’ll cost next to nothing, he’ll have a lot to prove, and he’d be a heck of a lot of fun to watch. I refuse to believe that the skills he showed in college have left him. Sure, it would be a PR disaster, but I think the public could be forgiving, as they have in the past, towards people who admit they did wrong and ask for forgiveness.

From what I’ve heard, the NFL will likely suspend him for the 2009 season, so if the team decided to go this route, they could stick with O’Sullivan or another stopgap vet for a year, and then go after Vick.

VICK!!!!

he could be our steve young, lol

oh god

michael vick is not the answer. He never showed he could be an effective passer in the NFL. Running QBs that have weak passing ability have a very poor track record. He is an amazing talent but his skill set just doesn’t translate into being a great quarterback.

If Martz is still here...

I say Colt Mccoy. He has a fast release, he’s mobile, and he has a very strong arm.

Ugh, though… I’d have to root for a Texas QA…?

Like I said in some other post...

I’m concerned about the quarterback situation for next year, but I really think the coaching staff needs to get sorted out first.

If Martz stays on next year as OC, or even were to get promoted to HC, then we might be able to continue with JTO as our quarterback. This is of course dependent on the level of success he achieves this year.

If Martz is gone and we have to implement a new offense next year, then I wouldn’t re-sign JTO. And we’d be right back at square one in our quarterback situation. In this situation, I’d probably want to bring in at least a stopgap young quarterback and draft a QB with a 3-6 round pick, with the expectation that the rookie will sit on the bench for the full season.

Definitely draft a Franchise QB in the first round. I dont know who profiles as the Best prospect though.

I think there were some people who said something similar in 2004 season looking ahead to the 2005 draft.

Well, anyway, if you don’t count Leinart… then there would have been people saying that at the time….

Definitely is a strong word. If the talent isn’t there, absolutely do not stretch for it when quality QBs often fall past the first round.

I could be more on board with “Definitely draft a QB on the first day.”

Yeah

McCloughan has to learn from his previous experience. If there is a question as to whether or not a QB is worth a first round pick, there are probably plenty of other players that definitely are.

This is a prediction, not a vote

But I think Nolan is going to be canned after this year, and Martz will take over. Assuming he has a reasonable season and isn’t dead from all the sacks he takes, JTO will be back.
