Open "What the hell, Cal?" Thread.
So the cold, dead, buried corpse of this Cal game isn't even cold or dead yet, but it's a 4 score game (assuming no two-point conversion) with 6 minutes to go, and I'm just left wondering... unsure... wondering what went wrong.
Cal never even had an inch in this game. For most of the day, Best had run for NEGATIVE yards. Maryland spent the whole game eating the clock and shredding the game on the ground.
Kevin Riley's line looks fine, but the early turnover is probably a clearer indication of his play today than the late, almost meaningless touchdown. The defense was pitiful. I just don't know what to think. I was getting excited for this season. Kevin Riley looks like a stud. Best looks like a stud. The receivers were playing good ball and the defense made a little bit of a case for itself against a decent Michigan State team.
I thought this might be the year to get excited. The QB trash we've dealt with the last 3 years finally looked like it was over with. The national expectations were low after consecutive disappointing seasons, but the talent was there.
Bah... another heartbreaker for the Bears. There goes the national ranking.
NOTE: I just held off on posting this because Cal scored a shit ton of points in the fourth quarter to make it interesting and I actually thought they were going to have a chance, but yahoo box score didn't tell me there were apparently no timeouts and before the screen had the time to 30-second refresh, it was over. :(
On the bright side, it's not the end of the world. We'll look back at this game and laugh when we beat USC later in the year.

Cal game
I watched most of the game. What blows my mind is that Cal didn’t fly out to the east coast until yesterday afternoon. Why not fly the Thursday night red eye so you get some time to get over the jet lag? Especially with a noon game. It took until the 4th quarter for Cal to really get thing going, right around when their games normally start.
The plus is that it’s a non-conference loss early in the year. Clearly Cal is not a national title contender, but the loss could have been a lot worse.

If Riley can build off the 4th quarter he had, then I’m optimistic about the season. He wasn’t very good last week, and he was missing on a lot of passes in the 3rd quarter today, but in the 4th he just snapped into place and stopped looking like Alex Smith (too soon?). If that’s the for-reals Riley who’s coming back and playing for the rest of the season, Cal’s got a shot at a good year. If not, then it’s going to be a sad fall.
Trent Kline: Decentish. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com. It's not being updated right now. Hope for more at your own risk.

Well, you’re entitled to your opinion. Spent the best years of my life so far going there, though. That school was very good to me.

That is good news for when Cal beats USC later in the year. November 8. Mark it.

yeah Cal looked bad
that was pretty ugly and pretty hard to watch. They did look better late, but who knows if Maryland was kinda going through the motions at that point. Hopefully they’ll bounce back and at least make a good showing in the Pac-10.
