Matt Maiocco describes this game as a GPS game for the 49ers.  In spite of all the injuries to Seattle, I agree that this will definitely give the 49ers a better idea of where they're at in the NFL world.  If healthy, the Seahawks defense brings a great pass rush, a solid secondary and great linebackers.  Even if their offense does struggle, the defense will be able to keep them in this game.

This is not a game for a close, moral defeat.  If the 49ers want to be relevant in 2008, I think they need to win this game.  It's going to be a tough game and Seattle has plenty of healthy talent to win this game.  Throw in a crazy crowd for the home opener and it's going to be a battle.  However, if the 49ers can avoid too many turnovers and even create some of their own, this has definite upset potential.

For the second straight week I think we'll just use this as the open thread for all early games.  If we get a repeat of last week's commenting I'll open up a second half thread.  And as always, I'll be back with a post-game recap.

GO NINERS!

Nothing yet out there streaming the 49ers, but if you’re bored for now you can watch streaming video of the Bills and Jaguars: http://www.justin.tv/directory/sports/football?kind=live&order=hot

Check that out each week to see if the 49ers are being streamed there.

Might have something for you: TVUNetworks.com

I clicked on TV Guide there and selected FOX and it showed that the 49ers-Seahawks game would be on. I’m not sure how the site works or if it’s free or costs or whatever, but check it out.

I’m out here in Tennessee right now taking care of my uncle. He’s glued to the Nascar race. These locals are really defending V.Young. On the streets they seem to like him and want the media to loosen up a little.

QB issue

I forgot about the whole emergency QB thing. They just mentioned it, but for those missed, with Wallace out, if Frye has to come into the game for Hasselbeck for whatever reason, Hasselbeck can’t return.

Frye was listed as their #3 emergency QB and Wallace was active for the game…not sure if they waited to long to declare Wallace out. Of course Kenny Albert could have been incorrect as well.

is at his best stopping the run up the gut. Teams were ahead so often last year that the simple run plays were 60% of the calls.

So far in this young season, the gameplan seems to be to attack our secondary and run off tackle. Partially to avoid Willis, I would assume.

and faster

why would a 5 yard out or a slant to VD not work EVERY time? this could be a the subject for another post Fooch. VD has been ok in other situations, but he’s nonexistent in the red zone.

good point

My favorite play is when it’s 2nd or 3rd and a couple yards and they split him out wide and run a quick pass to him there and let him overpower the corner covering him

Red Zone Offense

I wonder what our Red Zone Offense has ranked during the Mike Nolan era. Granted he’s not making the calls, but it’s almost like you know we are going to kick a FG since he’s been here.

Especially after shooting themselves in the foot so often...

—Punt caught at 1, fumbled into end zone for touchback.
—Blocked kick turns into 1st down for them, leads to TD.
—Fumble returned for TD.
—Kick out of bounds after TD, leads to FG.

If they ever start playing smart, they might have a shot.

The NFC West is wide open

The division is weak this year, I feel good about our chances. We have a legitimate shot at a division title.

And JT looked good today. He still needs to work on his “happy feet” in the pocket when he’s feeling pressure, but its exciting to have a QB who can manage the game and make throws downfield.

If by “happy feet” you mean “holding onto the ball, not running, and generally trying to get sacked” then I agree with you.

His passes looked a LOT sharper today, and when he made decisions, they were, by and large, good decisions. He played well. He has serious problems in his game, but they didn’t lose it for us today, so I’ll keep my guarded skepticism quiet for a bit.
