49ers CB Shawntae Spencer to IR, Season Done

EDITOR'S NOTE 6:40PM - I received a text about this and was planning on posting something, so I'll just promote this FanPost.   I made a couple changes in the article as copyright laws prohibit posting the entire article.  While it sucks to lose Spencer at least the situation is resolved.  I'll post my own thoughts in more detail in the comments, but this could be the kind of break that gets Tarell Brown significantly more playing time.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3605401&campaign=rss&source=NFLHeadlines

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Shawntae Spencer will miss the rest of the season with a torn ligament in his left knee.

Shawntae Spencer

Spencer

Spencer, a fifth-year pro, will be placed on injured reserve soon after undergoing surgery Wednesday to repair the ligament. He injured his knee late in the 49ers' road victory at Seattle on Sept. 14, and missed last week's victory over Detroit.

. . .

Tarell Brown and Donald Strickland will compete to replace Spencer with the 49ers, who kept 12 defensive backs on their 53-man roster to start the season.

Boo Injuries!!!!!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

I should feel worse

But mostly I’m excited to see Tarell Brown get more playtime.

This is pretty much exactly how I feel. I’m hardly surprised Spencer is hurt again, and while it’s disappointing, I’m hoping both Tarell Brown and Reggie Smith get the chance to play and step up. Brown already did it once, as he had a great game against the Lions.

Brown

I definitely think Brown benefits the most from this. When healthy Donald Strickland was going to get playing time even if Spencer was healthy. Now with Spencer out and Strickland sidelined, Brown is the nickel back for now.

This will also lead to more playing time for Reggie Smith, although his time will depend more on Strickland’s injury obviously.

by KennySeagle on Sep 23, 2008 9:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Correct me if i’m wrong, but isn’t this Spencer’s final year on his contract? If Brown shows he’s got what it takes could we not see Spencer in a Niner uniform again?? I am excited Brown gets some playing time, but I always had a soft spot for Spencer and I am definitely sad to hear about his injury.

Spencer...

… I think is signed through 2012.

Yup

Link

For cheap too. In 2012, if that site is correct, he’ll only cost $3.2 million.

Wait

They have the cost different here. Regardless, he’s signed until 2012

replacement

Although it may seem like a good idea now that they kept so many players in the secondary on the roster, I think they should replace Spencer with a tackle.

yikes

that kinda sucks, I liked Spencer, and with Harris sorta injury prone I’m not sure I wanna see Brown starting. Who is the dime back now? Smith or bump Goldson up to CB?

OT: Matt Millen fired

Off topic: I hear that Matt Millen was fired by the Lions last night. Do people remember him as a commentator? He’d been a pretty good announcer when he went into management with Detroit. He may want to cool his heels for the rest of the year but if he can overcome his incompetence as a GM I’d like to see him back in the booth.

As bad as injuries can be to a football team, the Niners’ injuries so far have been in places where it hasn’t hurt the team so much. The Niners do have lots of defensive backs. And Alex Smith wasn’t going to start anyway. Compared with Seattle’s (or New Orleans’) receiver problems it could be a lot worse.

Correct

Jay Glazer’s reporting it. Happy Days for Lions fans I’d imagine.

He can go the Steve Phillips route, except Millen might actually be able to provide some knowledge on the sport.

Damn. Shawnte was one of the better nickel backs in the league I feel. This might be more of loss than we anticipate at this time…

Well...

… I’m all for Spencer, as I’ve been one of his bigger boosters. However, his injury issues are starting to become an issue. As you pointed out, this may be a bigger loss than most of us anticipate, but I also look at it as a great opportunity for this coaching staff to figure out what they have in guys like Brown, Hudson, and Reggie Smith.

It’s Ahmed Plummer all over again, just with significantly less raw talent and significanly less money involved.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

by howtheyscored on Sep 24, 2008 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Well...

… kind of. I think that once Plummer signed his extension, he lost some of that desire to play. Spencer seems like he wants to work hard day in and day out, and it shows. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that no matter how hard he works, Spencer may never crack the top 2 again, and Plummer was handed the #1 job for no good reason at all.

by sfgfan on Sep 24, 2008 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

The situations are pretty starkly different once you get past “Injury Prone CB.” I just don’t know how ridiculous my comment would have gotten if I’d kept throwing “and significantly less…”s at the end for good measure.
